I've noticed a lot of artists and students who watch my videos or take my courses are over 50, and I thought it would be interesting to share the benefits drawing has on our well being and brain function (especially later in life.) I am 26 but learning about these awesome benefits, like how drawing helps with memory has shown me reasons why I will continue to draw later in life. I am definitely not saying being over 50 is old or too late to draw. Just wanted to clear that up aha :D

I am 51... I started at 6, but I am confident that I draw and paint now better than ever in my life. And studying and learning other matters (like programming, 3D, video editing, etc) faster than ever (literally... in two different languages, I watch most video tutorials at 1.75x or 2x speed to do it faster :D . Something that I was not really able to do when I was much younger). As a proof, just like every time you check old drawings at every moment in your life, and realize the mistakes you used to make and that now you would never do...I still feel that embarrassment, and know the many ways to improve that painting or drawing, even if I made it just one year ago. After all, I actually believe what it is said about the brain... If you keep it active it adapts to the activity and keeps you evolving. In any facet : visual art, programming, music, etc. Besides, people are now obsessed with age (I blame the media a little for that)... we are pretty much the same at 25 , 35, 50 and even quite beyond (if anything, you go gaining experience). At least for the usual digital or traditional tasks that we need to do or enjoy doing. It is just not the same to compete in swimming or any other Olympic category (although there are competitions specific for certain ages), but that was never in my life plans :D :D

If you're the kind of person who has the health and the activity to live to 100+, 50 is nothing, and you could even argue the start of the best of life. If you've had health issues since infancy and you're lucky if you manage to hit 60, then 50 is really old. Old age and life is very much not created equal.

Improving faster than ever in art, also, and learning programming (very quickly), which I thought was impossible for me in my 20s and 30s (I felt impostor syndrome with coding, being an artist). So... there's that. :) And I agree... I won't "retire" from drawing, I'll try to keep doing it at 97 :D :D

She's right. I had a stroke 5 years ago and in rehab they had a whole class of craft type activities. Really helped with dexterity and also distracted u from feeling down. It was something to do, especially with others on the same journey. I was lucky enough to be able to progress to independance but once home, what to do between my brain shutting down for cognitive naps? Was very bored and somewhat isolated without much energy then. I got some pencils and paper and started to doodle, then draw. Flowers! Doing fine now, but still enjoy drawing and took some lessons! If anyone can encourage a family member or friend to start, its great therapy for someone feeling low, no matter what age, for any seniors, and great for cognitive rehab! Thx for reminding us Kirsty!

Coloring specifically has helped me cope with the emotional issues related to having children with extreme mental health issues. The stress and depression the situation caused was intense. Using my hands and my brain to create color in the world on a smaller scale helped center me in ways my faith and medications couldn't. Drawing is intimidating to me at this point, but I am trying to do cartoon style non-human creations on a smaller scale - particularly rainbows - as color brings me joy! 🌈

Hi Kirsty! I just want to say thank you so much for your videos. I have watched several tutorials on KZbin but yours are by far my favorite. You have such a warmth about you and it’s obvious that you genuinely want to use your talents to help others. ❤ I drew a lot as a teenager, but in adulthood it became very rare and would often be years in between. I stumbled across your channel about a year ago and was immediately hooked and inspired, I watched dozens of your videos. Not long after, I had to put my cat to sleep and was absolutely devastated. The following day I was at work grieving the loss. I picked up a torn off scrap of printer paper from my desk and a mechanical pencil, and started sketching my cat. It was so incredibly therapeutic, and to date, it is by far the best drawing I’ve ever done, thanks to techniques I learned from you. Thank you so much. I can’t wait to join the membership. Oh. My. Gosh. Thank you so much, Kirsty. This might be your best video yet (and that's a pretty high bar!!!). I picked up drawing a year ago at age 63, having not drawn anything since the 1970s. Over the last 12 months, I've experienced first-hand the benefits you described so well. My life is much richer because of it. And your instructional videos have played an enormous role in that journey: pulling me into drawing, teaching me how to improve my work, and inspiring me to keep at it when things go wrong. I can never thank you enough. There are a couple benefits I've experienced -- or rather lessons I've learned -- that you didn't mention, at least not directly. One is to be less judgemental about myself. Holy crap, I wish I'd had this mindset for the last 50 years. The other is to draw what I ACTUALLY see and not what I THINK I see or think I know. That's another life lesson that would've been helpful the last 50 years. Wow. That's a lot longer than I intended. My apologies. Anyway, thanks again for helping to make drawing a key part of my life.

Well Christmas time this year I decided to start sketching and let me tell you I have draw some pretty cool things, I also have been creating sketch books for each of my 3 kids to enjoy long after I am gone! They are proud of me and make requests and I am thrilled to comply. My dad was an amazing artist and nothing gives me greater pleasure than to see his artwork hanging on the walls of my house! I absolutely connected with everything Kirsty said.. Drawing is a great way to pass time increase your mood and feeling odd self worth.. I was a nurse on a skilled nursing unit for 30 years I worked 12:16 20 hours a day days off holidays weekends I worked during the major nursing shortage and at this point in my life there is not a lot I can do physically can't take walks can't go to the store and shop for food that I can draw I can take a break when I heard I can use my other hand... Kirstie hits at 100%... Azure age progresses your life slows down you lose the ability to do the things you can normally do and you have much more time to let's say draw or paint... She is in no way being malicious or hurtful or talking like 50 is sooooo old. But the simple facts are as you progress in age your abilities change .. drawing is fun and for the most part easy for anyone to do does not require a lot of physical activity. Kirsty is a Fantastic Artist and I love watching her... Thank you Kristy and I hope to be able to join some of your classes soon ... Have a beautiful day... Thanks again Kristy ...

I moved back to the states and gradually gave up painting. I am now 80 and once again want to paint. The problem is that I have developed a small tremor in my hands. It really effects my painting. I decided to try pencils since the pressure seems to calm the tremor. I have been struggling with how to draw and have purchased different kinds of pencils but couldn’t figure out to use them. Thank Kirsty! ❤What a great show and a good motivation for everyone. I think that it is important that you talk about this subject because of society and what people make others think about life and age and what goes with what. It shouldn’t matter, you’re right. For many reasons I myself did not pursue art but did some when I was younger. I have always wanted to get into art but life got in the way. I really believe that it was the perfect way of gathering experiences to help get ideas on for inspiration. The older one is, the more ideas and subjects to incorporate in your work. 😊

I'm 56 and I started drawing again seriously 12 years ago. I used to draw as a child with a regular HB hexagon pencil. I saw a picture of a former co-worker's daughter asleep, and I had some charcoal pencils and used the grid format I learned in high school to get the porportions right. and created a drawing. It turned out ok and the co-worker loved it (it was not a commission-just a catalyst for an artistic reboot). Then I kept drawing and although I had limited funds (only working part-time) I kept drawing. Now I work full time and have invested a lot in art supplies (it's an addiction). I have less time, but I try to work on my art on my days off and my art has improved dramatically (better supplies=better art). Start drawing, keep drawing the more you draw the more you'll learn how to solve problems and improve. Watch videos by Kirsty et. al. and buy quality art supplies, your art will improve...guaranteed.

I am in my early 60’s and find that inspiration for drawing is lacking the older I get. My eyes are not as good as they used to be either. For these reasons I don’t draw much anymore.

I remember when I thought 50 was old... probably when I started drawing and painting as a nipper. Now I'm still painting at nearly 54, seems 50 isn't so old after all. 😄

I wanted to sign up for your drawing decoded course however I keep missing the openings. Is it a pencil only course or at own pace? I want to use ballpoint pen.

HI. SORRY FOR THE CAPS BUT WANTED TO GET YOUR ATTENTION. Your link for the free tips doesn't seem to be working. I usually receive your emails almost instantly but this time I haven't received anything. Even after several tries. Just thought you should know cuz I would really love to have the link.

I really don't understand why people say over 50 like something happens to you when you're 49 and then bam , you're old . I'm 50 and I can tell you 50 isn't old . I have a physically and mentally demanding job and the " young guys" can't begin to keep up with me . I am just as strong as I ever was , I have no gray hair at all . The only difference is now I do sleep better than I did when I was young . Age is largely a funtion of your mental state , I know people lot's younger than me who are old . I admit I might be the exception but a lot of us gen x folks are still young . My kids get a kick out of it when we go places and they think my son is my brother . 50 is not old .

It doesn't matter how old I get, I will find the time to draw, but I honestly don't like the Loomis method. That's not the way I was taught in high-school. I went through h.s in Germany and I was taught differently.

50 is not old, unless you think it is. I’m 61 and let me tell you my body and creative mind is a whole lot better than these sedentary, angry women in their 20s 30s and 40s. ❤️

Will you still draw when you're 64? ...alright I'll show myself out the door.
