Philippine Airports: From Worst Airport to World's Most Beautiful World-Class Airports
Once considered for having the worst Airport in Asia, the Philippines is now hailed for having a world-class and World’s Most Beautiful Airports.
Clark International Airport in Pampanga has been hailed as one of the 24 World’s Most Beautiful Airports, according to the prestigious Prix Versailles, World Architecture Award. Clark is among the top six in the world in the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization’s (UNESCO) Architecture and Design Awards under the airport category for its architectural design. It is one of two in Southeast Asia that made it to the list of 24 airports around the world. The other is Vietnam’s Van Don International Airport.
Clark International Airport was designed by Populous and Casas+Architects and constructed by Megawide Construction Corporation and GMR Infrastructure, which was completed in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic global emergency. Spanning 110,000 square meters with four floors and 18 bridges, Clark can cater to eight million passengers annually.
Winners of the Prix Versailles, referred to as laureates, emerge triumphant in various award categories. The selection of laureates is meticulously carried out, evaluating criteria such as harmony, balance, and the seamless integration of each project within its cultural context.
So far, two Philippine airports have brought renown to Philippine design and infrastructure, Clark International Airport - a finalist in the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (Unesco) Architecture and Design Awards recently. And Mactan-Cebu International Airport Terminal 2, which has garnered multiple international design awards since opening in 2018.
The Mactan Cebu International Airport (MCIA) Terminal 2 has been a source of pride for the Filipinos ever since it was inaugurated in June 2018. It has since received global praise and attention, thanks to its ingenious and sleek design that showcases the strength and beauty of local talent and materials. In 2020, MCIA Terminal 2 won the “Completed Buildings-Transport” category, besting Singapore’s Jewel Changi Airport.
According to the notes by the award-giving body, they chose to give the victory to Mactan Airport because it was a simple and elegant new airport that uses many locally sourced materials. It is integrated into the local area through the development of a local hub and a landscape plan. The internal spaces are light and uncluttered... It is clearly popular with the local community and this established a memorable travels experience.
Another milestone of Philippines Aviation industry, is the construction of new manila International Airport.
San Miguel Aerocity Incorporated has reached at least 80 percent completion of land development for the New Manila International Airport. The builder of the soon-to-be largest gateway in the Philippines is accelerating land development with the goal of starting civil works 2024.
The $15 billion Airport City development project is expected to start commercial operation by 2029, with the terminal one will be erected by next year. The Phase 1 of the project which includes a passenger terminal building with airside and landside facilities, an airport toll road, and one runway will facilitate around 35 million passengers a year.
The New Manila International Airport located in Bulacan province, north of Manila is set to become the main aviation gateway in the Philippines. The 2,500 hectares of the airport, will relieve the air traffic operations at the existing, and overly congested Ninoy Aquino International Airport.
In addition, the Philippines is in the way to modernized its aviation facilities. Two of the biggest Airport development in the region are constructed in the Philippines. Sangley point International Airport and New Manila International Airport.
The development of the $11 billion Sangley Point International Airport has moved a step closer to reality, now that its private sector proponents have finally signed the development agreement with the local government of Cavite.
With the signing of the agreement, the group is ready to commence the work necessary to finally implement the long-needed infrastructure project that aimed at providing a premium gateway that will initially serve as an alternative to the Ninoy Aquino International Airport.

I also think Philippine Airlines should revive their non-stop European flights. I think this should happen once SMC upgrades NAIA to allow a higher annual passenger capacity and NMIA opens to traffic. The following European airports should have non-stop Manila flights using either or both airports: * Lisbon * Madrid * Barcelona * Dublin * London-Gatwick * London-Heathrow * Manchester * Glasgow * Edinburgh * Paris-Charles De Gaulle * Amsterdam-Schiphol * Brussels * Geneva * Zurich * Rome-Fiumicino * Milan-Malpensa * Athens * Frankfurt * Munich * Berlin * Hamburg * Copenhagen * Oslo * Stockholm-Arlanda * Helsinki I think additional European airports will also get the non-stop Manila flight using NAIA and/or NMIA.

That many European stops? That’s wishful thinking for now. 😂 PAL is heavily under equipped with airplanes! Their recent order last year? Or early this year was for 10 A350-1000s. The delivery of those 10 would take several years! As it is it’s current fleet of a very meager 49 aircrafts (Cebupacific has 67) could not even connect major secondary cities in PH. How much more for THAT many european countries? 😂

The Philippines will want to compete in the European non-stop flight market like Singapore and Thailand. I think they are expected to start at Heathrow, CDG, and Schiphol for non-stop European flights, and then add others as time goes on and they have more planes to allow for additional European flights.

I think these routes should happen once PAL has adequate planes to handle them and SMC finishes its upgrade on NAIA and opens NMIA.

@@EC4U2C_Studioz They can start 2 to 3 European stops with the delivery of new A350s. But definitely not all that you listed at once. It'll be a gradual operation.

It's also time for Philippine Airlines to add more North American airports to get the non-stop Manila flights. The additional non-stop Manila flights should happen once SMC upgrades NAIA and opens NMIA to traffic. The following additional North American airports should have non-stop Manila flights using NAIA and/or NMIA: * Seattle-Tacoma * Las Vegas * Denver * Calgary * Edmonton * Dallas-Ft. Worth * Houston-Intercontinental * Minneapolis-St. Paul * Chicago-O’Hare * Detroit * Boston * Montreal-Trudeau * Newark * Washington-Dulles * Atlanta * Orlando

With San Miguel Corporation's CEO, Ramon Ang, as the winner of the bidding for the rehabilitation, maintenance and operations of the Manila International Airport, Inhave no doubt that the airport will really become world class. There should be rules about NAIA and NMIA for international flights once NMIA opens. The international flights from budget airlines will very likely have to move to NMIA while the premium airlines for international flights can use both airports. All airlines can use both airports for domestic flights.

It is long overdue, but there needs to be a non-stop flight connecting NMIA to Mumbai, Delhi, and Chennai in India.

nobody goes to Philippines for tourism so what´s the point. Thailand is where the magic is located, not a place like Philippines with no cuisine or anything unique culturally, always borrowed from their colonial masters down to the language and street names.

Clark Airport's design is a copycat of the New Cebu International Airport. Hence it should not win that award since it's not original design.

@@richardnuevo I didn't say that I was proud in my statement, did I? Also, since you brought it up, we Cebuanos have every right to be proud. We have the oldest city in the country, the oldest school in the country not university is here, we have very beautiful sceneries, famous tourist spots known worldwide, the birth of Christianity, we have very rich cultural and historical contributions to the country, not only a commercial hub, but one of the major economic hubs in the country. We have very many talented, smart and good-looking people.
