• J. Prince Talks Drake ... -~-
A barbershop conversation between Steve Stoute, Future, Ebro, James Harden, and Maverick Carter popped up on Instagram recently. The trendsetters debated whether the masses revered Jay Z’s classic debut, Reasonable Doubt when first released in 1996. According to Future, “Jay Z wasn’t great when Tupac and Biggie were alive.” The discussion inspired the final #DXBreakdown of 2016, where we celebrate Ready To Die and Life After Death, and argue why Biggie Ain’t The GOAT. Let's break it down.
Is the Notorious B.I.G. still the greatest ever? Share your thoughts in the Community Section below. Follow the discussion on all socials. #DXBreakdown

The argument that Jay only blew bc Big and Pac died is made by fuck boys with the rap IQ of DJ Akademics. Their deaths made it harder or Jay to become the GOAT. He was competing with the insurmountable legend of ghosts. NAS v JAY is an easier comparison bc they have had equally sustained careers and produced a body of work in the different eras that we can judge and compare to see whose been consistently greater. You arguably will never defeat two legends who died in their prime. This argument is stupid. Jay Z's Reasonable Doubt, Blueprint, Hard Knock Life, Black Album, American Gangster, Blueprint 3, and 444 out of Big and Pacs ashes and when they died, he wasn't even the next in line. If the death created a vaccum of greatness that pushed the next person in without regard for their merit, then Method Man, Redman, LL, Raekwon, Nas, Andre 3K, Rakim, Raekwon, or any number of the other dozen rappers bigger than him would have been the goAT who went on to break Beatles records, drop more classics in every decade since, and give the world Kanye. This shit is dumb.

Yeah I agree wit 2PAC OBAMA, I think Nas and Jay are a better comparison. Just because somebody realized their true potential later in life don't mean they're not as great as the people who succeeded earlier. But all in all I think Nas gets the nod on this convo. Sure Jay is more mainstream and has more recognition with his charisma and wit, but Nas was always the better lyricist, no doubt in my mind.

Commandosoap777 Cudi's last 4 or 5 projects have been truly horrible. Commercial appeal is a part of the conversation and Cudi flat out hasn't had that since his debut. J. Cole gets bogged down by basically refusing to have features. I love his music, but J. Cole just doesn't appeal to the general public. Kendrick might end up being THE goat but old heads keep saying it's too early.

Based on just lyrical content alone J. Cole has more than proven himself in my opinion. Just wanted to point that out and lyricism is subjective. People tend to weigh in their opinions based on how they like an artist. Even if that said artist does not display much consciousness I don't think that takes away from there all around skill. It only distinguishes them from being just a battle rapper to an MC. That said I do believe biggie is one if not the GOAT as well as Jay-Z. You can see how much they contributed to the game in terns of style an charism Reasonable Doubt can go over peoples heads and is to date the most lyrical album of all time and that won't change anytime soon. Not even Jay can match his first album and he had twenty years to do so. If we don't include the personal and political aspect of MCing than than list of GOAT's would probably be somewhat like this. 1.Jay-z 2.Biggie 3.Eminim 4.Nas and so on but that's just my opinion.

People forget Jay Dame & Biggs were independent. Unheard of in NY at that time bc you needed label backing and radio play. They started their own label on drug money and shot videos and still blew up but not immediately. Illmatic was a slow seller the first year out the gate too. It didn't go platinum until after his IWW album came out, just like RD. Yet, NAS was on a label, so was Big, & Pac they had head starts and more marketing.

Why I think Biggie is one of the greatest of all time; Even though he only had two official albums, Ready to Die and Life After Death, what appeals to me and many others is his lyrics, flow, and his straight up rhythm. He may have been lacking in content due to his unexpected murder in ‘97, months before his second album debuted, but from the reasons I just listed, I personally he’s in the top 10.

I have to respectfully disagree when it comes to Jay-Z. I know a lot of people are not big fans of Jay-Z I hear it all the time especially in Texas but if you really listen to Reasonable Doubt Jay-Z does show that range of personal awareness and social awareness. You have songs like "can I live" " 22 twos" D'Evils you have songs like "Dead Presidents" Jay-Z shows his range in that album you just either not actually listening to the album or the album is so complex that it goes over your head because Jay-Z does use a lot of metaphors now I have to kind of agree with future Jay-Z was not hot until after Biggie and Pac because Jay-Z's first two albums was questionable his career was on the line until he dropped his third album Hard Knock Life that's when you started seeing Jay-Z as a mainstream artist. now if you want to put in rapper in the light of not showing personal awareness social awareness and just all about money cars clothes and hoes Lil Wayne is that example after Carter 1 which is one of Lil Wayne's best and personal albums that he's ever put out all his other albums are about money cars clothes hoes his mixtapes are all about money cars clothes and hoes and. he shows no personal experience he says no social awareness. I mean honestly what can you tell me about Lil Wayne what have you learned about Lil Wayne as in what has he gone through personally in life what is Lil Wayne's story pretty much other than this is the kid that was with cash money yes fine but Lil Wayne never talked about his childhood and his raps he never talks about his upbringing he never talks about his personal relationship with his mother he never talks about his personal relationship with his dad or anything like that. but I bet you know Jay-Z story I bet you know biggie story I bet you know Tupac story you know Nas story you know Eminem story but you know nothing about Lil Wayne but that's my opinion that's my argument peace love and happy New Years to everyone and much success to you all God bless

I think Ready to Die is top 10 rap albums, because it´s in my opinion one of the deepest hip hop albums that still is great sonically. I was on a school trip bus listening to it for the first time, then I heard the song Suicidal Thoughts, and I was out of words. The entire album is a simple Rags to riches concept, but done so masterfully. While Pac often talked about societies problems, he rarely talked about his deep problems. While he talked about shooting and robbing he was talking about how bad it is, for example in Gimme the loot. And the line in Juicy about people calling the police is genius. He painted the gangster struggle in a way nobody else has. It´s like a less direct version of ScHoolboy Q´s Oxymoron, the way he compares the positives and negatives of his life. Rarely we get an album that talks about childhood and adulthood in such a way. Just let me quote some lines to help you understand. Suicidal thoughts: I know my mother wish she got a fucking abortion. Juicy: Goddamn I love my life, cause I went from negative to positive. While Jay-Z and most other rappers when doing brag-raps sound like they think they´re better than us (especially with the I fucked your bitch concept), I sympathize with Biggie, that´s why I think Juicy is one of the saddest rap songs, along with Kanye´s Hey Momma for the same reason, because when he finally reached success he died. After listening to this album I thought of Biggie like some close friend who I´m afraid for.

SkyRip I would have recommended Me Against The World first and foremost. You should already know how personal his music is since you've heard it before. I'm confused as to why you'd think otherwise. His first three albums are his most personal, though. Big's storytelling may appeal to you more than Pac's raw emotion.

You're right but I don't think he was aiming to be that type of rapper. I've always said BIG was the GOAT flow/delivery artist. Even in his time there were better lyricists but no one could flow as nice as he could, maybe today it's different since flow and delivery have become the top priority so it would make sense that rappers nowadays flow incredibly well but that doesn't take away that in his time no one could flow as nice as he could. The only 90s rapper that I think holds a candle to BIG is Big Pun and he didn't debut until after BIG had passed, if you want to talk overrall GOATs I think Big Pun is it, he had the flow the lyrics and he even had some conscious rap content which BIG didn't.

He was a suicidal poet . He was deeper in his soul while Pac was more wise so to speak..But when you look at it in a musical aspect Big's albums are far better put together from the production to his rhyme schemes, the use of melody and the overall consistency. You have to think he was only 24 when he died I'm just trying to figure out why people like to label him as a flashy rick ross type artist when he isn't . He was a true MC.

People act like there can only be one GOAT when actuality there can be multiple, this is a fact if said rapper is respected by other rappers then they are a GOAT period, if they added something new to hip hop they are a GOAT, saying one is better than another is ridiculous, because the all made an impact in different ways. If they had an impact on Hip Hop they are a GOAT, unless someone can break down each rappers greatest albums and explain why it isn't as good as every other rapper in the running for GOAT then there is no reason trying to act like one is greater than another, anyone in the running to be a GOAT is a GOAT period: Ice Cube, Biggie, Nas, Eminem, 2Pac, Immortal Technique, KRS-One, Big L, Big Pun, LL Cool J, MF Doom, Jay-Z, Tech N9ne, Andre 3000, Rakim, Snoop Dogg, Ghostface Killah, Redman, GZA, Raekwon, Slick Rick, Lil Wayne, Lauren Hill, Queen Latifah, Common, Mos Def, Scarface, DMX, Kendrick Lamar, Q-Tip, Busta Rhymes, Lupe Fiasco, Kool M Dee, Canabis, Talib Kwali, MC Lyte, Black Thought, Chuck D, Big Daddy Kane, Kool G Rap and that list will grow as rap music continues

+Official DMC Jay's verse had more meaning? i think em's brilliant technicality veered your attention away from what his lines meant. Jay lacked in technicality hence he had no jaw dropping rhymes to snatch your focus away from what he was saying. A hard hitting rhyme from eminem would leave your mind bewilderment and force you to decipher and swallow that lyrical moment. By that time em would have already rapped on. when your attention was back and trying to follow what he had rapped right after his punchline, he would again release another punchline or double entandre, thus leaving your mind in a cycle of bafflement.

Song cry is a great song but I am pretty sure that he had way better songs in his earlier catalogue that are of the same material.

Biggie is the Greatest of all time, in my opinion. I know he only released two albums ("Ready To Die" and "Life After Death"), but it's not about the quantity, it's about the quality of the work. With just one album, "Ready To Die", he was able to change rap. I use the phrase, "change rap" because prior to the release of "Ready To Die" West Coast hip hop was dominating. "Ready To Die" was the album that ultimately led to the resurgence of the East Coast hip hop scene. It's incredible for an artist to have that level of success and impact after just one album. "All Eyez on Me" was Tupac Shakur's fourth album; "Vol 2...Hard Knock Life" was Jay Z's third studio album. I use those two examples because those are the albums that gave those artists crossover success. I also think Biggie is the greatest lyricist of all time. BIG was not a socially conscious rapper. He was more of an entertainer than a socially conscious poet. But, the fact that he didn't make socially conscious records doesn't make him less of a rapper. Bob Dylan made socially conscious music, Frank Sinatra didn't- but Frank Sinatra was still a better singer. Luther Vandross didn't make socially conscious music, but he is still one of the greatest R&B male vocalists of all time. Another reason why I feel BIG is the GOAT is because his art sold. "Ready to Die" was certified 4x platinum by the RIAA in 1999. "Life After Death" sold 690,000 copies in its first week, and was certified diamond by the RIAA in 2000. So BIG had critical acclaim and commercial success right from the beginning. NAS's debut album, "Illmatic, was critically acclaimed, but didn't sell. Jay-Z's "Reasonable Doubt" is a masterpiece but initially it didn't sell. Biggie was also more efficient than most rappers. He was able to produce a specific outcome (his music) with a minimum amount or quantity of waste or unnecessary effort. People that worked with him say almost everything he recorded was usable material (it was good enough to be used). If an artist has a vault of unreleased music hidden away, to me that says that most of that material was unusable (it wasn't good enough to be released). Biggie was also one of the most influential artists of all time. He influenced Jay Z, Lil' Kim, JADAKISS, and several others. I respect everyone's opinion. Music is subjective. But, Biggie is my guy (the GOAT).

lombe Ng'andu He is huge influence but a GOAT no. His Life After Death only went diamond because it was released not long after he died. Everyone knows that deceased artist make more money. Plus, lyrically Eminem could beat him. He would be challenged but would still lose. Watch both Eminem and BIG's freestyles. Plus, one deserve the GOAT title more than LL Cool J. Do some research on him then respond. And I'm not just talking from the surface.

If you pay attention to the order of Biggies verses and the story that unfolds within them, you see just how deep of an artist he was. He was paving a path to unfold his story and tell of his life, his struggles, the hustles, the issues faced with black culture and society. It's all there if you pay attention and you can see that he had every intention of developing on these ideas as his career would have unfolded. There's no doubt that if his career was allowed to develop further he'd have become a staple in the GOAT discussion, I mean he already is and he only had 2 albums. It took 6 albums for Jay Z to even throw himself into the conversation.
