Darrel Be thats because its more accessible now and people will listen to anything. Back then you had to actually go out to a record store and buy the physical copy of an album. So you had to be competitive and an actual good rapper for anyone to think it was worth actually going out to buy your album. So rap was at its peak because being a good lyricist was essential to survive in the industry

I don't know how you can make this breakdown without talking about the Tribe. ATCQ dropped an album last year which, IMO, is in their top 3 albums they've ever put out. Not only is it critically acclaimed like most tribe albums, but it also sold heaps and was only their second album to top the charts. They also managed to fit in features from their old-head friends like busta, Kwali, Andre 3000 and consequence (all of which you didn't mention either) as well as current up and comers like .Paak and Kendrick.

But they were getting older and Killer Mike has even talked about how he felt like his shot was over and he just didn't make it to be a major act. Then they met and formed Run the Jewels and both of them took off in their late 30's to heights neither of them had ever seen before. Ricardo Alexander Killens you mentioned Kanye and he’s a rock star with dragon power. You comment on hip hop is automatically invalid. The main reason why people feel like these old cats aint got nothing to give is because of the way that hip hop is different to rock. Rap and hip-hop has always been about a fresh perspective and giving a voice to the voiceless, and as such, the community has always searched for the younger emcees because they have this fresh perspective that no-one in the mainstream has heard before. Hip-hop has always been about what's next and what's new. Nowadays, because hip-hop fans have started to age, we've got this new idea though. That the new shit isn't as good as the old shit. This has been made even more powerful by the internet not only allowing wack rappers to get a stage, but making all the good old shit easily accessible for everyone. This leads to these over-40 cats to still hold, and in some cases, even create more fame for themselves despite their prime years being behind them. 10 years ago, the list would have been much shorter because the belief that the old shit was better wasn't as prevailing in the main-stream as it is now, as well as because a lot of these rappers that made it in the 90s weren't over 40 yet. if you look at a lot of those careers tho, most of their lowest selling and in some cases worst music came in that period where they didnt have their old popularity, or their newfound resurgence of popularity.
@MrWorldfamous237 жыл бұрын
Isaac Calabrese I don't understand. Are you saying that once you turn 40 you no longer have a voice?? Here in America the black struggle is the black struggle to the death. Anything we do at any age is a reflection of The Culture. OUR CULTURE. There are millions of black ppl that are over 40 who feel like they are voiceless. STILL. Who speaks for them? Surely you can't a kid born in the mid 90's to be that voice. Or are you saying that Hip-Hop can no longer be that mouth piece for them at that age? The black ppl who were there at it's creation or shortly after. Who grew up right along the elements and the music. Now should be unceremoniously told to go away? 🤔
@betchaker217 жыл бұрын
I'm not saying that once you turn 40 you don't have a voice, I'm saying that hip-hop has historically been about new and fresh perspectives. This is what differs it from other genre's like rock because allowing an artist to repeat themselves for 30 years is frowned upon. Often someone who has been in the game for ~20 years doesn't have that fresh perspective because they've already allowed that to play out in their music. This is especially the case if they have already had some amount of success previously, because they have spent a lot of their recent life living with money and fame and disconnected from the street. This of course is never 100% the case and there is definitely a place for the older cats to have a spot in hip hop, especially as the fans age, but the day when the genre stops looking for new talent with fresh perspectives is the day the genre starts to die and go stagnant. This has happened historically with most other genres. Rock fans stopped looking for new perspectives and now it is a fragmented culture with some clinging to only the older artists and the newer voices not really being able to break into the mainstream because of it. This isn't something I think anyone wants for hip hop because without this culture thats been cultivated, we would be without the talents of many amazing young artists.
@dice2689267 жыл бұрын
No its the White industry that plays Hip-Hop, we control the movements they own & control the industry's. Every Hip-Hop award has always been looked down at since the 90s til now. We need artist in control of B.E.T., Ebony, etc & build institutions. What happened 2 106? Source? Rap City? Etc? BUT TRL back getting money off Hip-Hop artist giving back to the white owners who deny equality in institutional ownership. (CMT awards broadcast on national tv, Black music which is most music only on cable) PAY ATTENTION
@Minoritynomad7 жыл бұрын
I don't think it's a matter of thinking the new shit isn't good. I think the issue is we can't relate to most of what these new rappers are talking about. Let's be honest, black folks weren't running around popping molly and wearing skirts like that. I grew up on Public Enemy, Tribe, Wu Tang, NAS, Pac, Big, Eminem, KRS-One. What under 30 artists are even close to touching these guys lyrically aside from say Kendrick, J.Cole, Big Sean, Tyler, Gambino, or Drake (31). Now i'll happily groove to new hip hop at the club. But I'm not listening to an album start to finish anymore.

I think it's the mainstream media brainwashing that's got people thinking that "you gotta be young to be a hot rapper". All the best rappers are the OGs! They the ones that's been doing this shit. In reality we only get like 1 or 2 REAL hot young rappers every year. The rest of the young guys and girls coming in are recyclables.

To me its the singers too. Children that have no depth of experience that the things they sing dont really pull the heartstrings. Its why kids are into songs from the 70s and 80s. Artists whos albums are outselling new ones right now. Its amazing. They had kate bush and fleetwood mac charting because they were put on a tv show stranger things and kids ate it up.

Lyrically old heads are better as well. 50 said it though, none of this generation wants to hear any of that lyrical shit. The reason it may seem like they have "fallen off", but really they still growing personally, financially, and musically. The younger generation should show more respect. Whether or not my 16 year old cousin is actively listening to them is irrelevant, old heads still paved the way for this generations artists and are continuing to build that road day by day.
@chainlace27 жыл бұрын
Thomas Grove That's like saying we didn't want to hear Isley Brothers,Commodores, Earth,Wind,and Fire. Music is an art and timeless that shouldn't be judged by the age of who's putting out good content as long as it's true to the art and their craft. That's the problem these kids don't understand music frequencies and its eternal.
@TheGeorgeD137 жыл бұрын
It has nothing to do with respect or showing it. That's irrelevant. Personally, as part of the younger generation you're bashing, I only really listen to the older generation because they're that much better lyrically and I don't know a single soul in my generation that listens to these new guys that are terrible rappers, but there must be some out there. But whenever rap or hip-hop comes up in conversation, those young guys don't ever come up unless it's somebody good like Kendrick or J. Cole.
@TheGeorgeD137 жыл бұрын
chainlace2, they do understand that shit. I guess they just like different things than you do.
@thomasgrove7 жыл бұрын
I'm not bashing. Every generation can agree that there are two different types of rappers (for the most part). There are lyrical rappers and there are mumble rappers. Everyone can agree that people like Kendrick or J. Cole are the best lyrically, but I'll go back to my point that MOST of the current generation does not want to hear lyrical rap. They want to turn up and not have to digest every line being spit. It's interesting that you say you don't know a single person who listens to the new wave of rap when that's pretty much all that's played. Migos, 21 Savage, Kodak Black, Post Malone? Just want to make it a point that I listen to everyone. I enjoy both mumble and lyrical rap for different reasons.
@TheGeorgeD137 жыл бұрын
Whenever Hip-Hop is brought up, Migos, 21 Savage, Kodak Black, Post Malone are never really brought up. Maybe they do listen to them, but they've never shared that with me. Having listened to some of the mumble rappers, they don't seem to actually mumble. That's not a good term to use since they don't actually mumble. I can understand every word they're saying. They just have very little substance to their words whereas the older guys do tend to have more substance and nuance. I do agree that there seems to be more emphasis on the beat and the music than on the lyrics for some people.

Great video! As an 18 year old, most of the rappers that I've grown up listening to are entering their 30s (Kendrick/Drake/Cole/Gambino/Wayne) & it's crazy to think that it won't be long until they are viewed as older rappers. I feel like all of them will still be releasing great music if they don't plan to have early retirements.

I think the main reason why the over 40 rappers can be successful is the subject matter. They don't have to be trying to make radio music or rap about drugs anymore because they already did that. They are still rapping because they truly love the craft, and don't need to focus on the business anymore unlike the younger rappers signed to major labels who need their music played at parties and at clubs.
@Givethxxx6 жыл бұрын

Could it be that the age over 25 group relate more to the over 40 rappers since they are a dying breed when it comes to lyrics, thus they keep on staying relevant and the younger group under 25 appreciate more the beats and bass?

There are rappers that are great that are 40 or over. However, claiming that these rappers are the most important or impactful isn't necessarily true. Talant, ambitilon and impact can exist for artists of many different ages and i think the real take away from this is that if you have the capability and ambition to make music age doesn't mean much.
@blindguitarfox7 жыл бұрын
We are pretty much seeing the first generation of older veterans and considering that half of the people in this video laid the foundation of what we listen to now it's not surprising that they are great!
