HAWAIʻI ISLAND - This Unoccupied Aircraft Systems footage is part of an expansive release by the USGS, which includes over a thousand video files that were recorded during the 4-month eruption of Kilauea on the lower East Rift Zone in the summer of 2018.
In this video, Kahu Piʻilani Kaʻawaloa shares the moʻolelo surrounding her choice for a new name, Ahuʻailāʻau, with the Hawaiʻi Board on Geographic Names.
A synthesized voice was utilized in the narration for this story. Video and photos are from the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory.

I just want to say something about all the rude comments about not being able to listen to this lady's voice. She's clearly a little bit older native Hawaiian, who's talking about important cultural aspects. Have some respect; just because she doesn't speak in the carefully rehearsed tones you're used to hearing doesn't mean she isn't saying something important to her culture.

A fictional show once used a Nazi Germany appearance as part of a symbol play (fictional situations using real life images), in Germany that episode was forbidden whether because Germany didn't want to think about it or from propaganda or whatever the reason. @@MsDcameron Respect, indeed. Be still, listen, and learn from your elders. Sure, it sounds a little different than what you might hear in the regional accents or dialects close to home, but granting a formal name to something that changed the lives of thousands of people, in a culture where a name is not “just a label,” but a vital part of identity - is the appropriate thing to do. I am glad to see new footage from the 2018 eruption. And I am looking forward to “Big Daddy “ Fissure 8 has a totally appropriate name in the language of the original families to the Lower Puna region.

@@ml.2770 Yes, PGV does it consistently with "we don't frack" however they did move tons of toxic materials of which they denied having for years. They moved it to a close by location. If the threatening lava hit it they would have killed hundreds of people due to the toxic fumes emitted into the air. The country of Switzerland no longer allows Geothermal productions in their country at all. They've proven it causes major earthquakes.

"A synthesized voice was used in the narration of this story.” This has to be the most painful audio I've heard in years. The choice of this voice is disturbing to me for another reason as well. The Hawaiians I know happen to be scientists, often geologists. While all agree that culture is important, one in particular points out that what is being portrayed here is a racial stereotype comfortable to some westerners. This is not to denigrate hearing this story nor the person telling it but a critique of the artificial voice used. Is true respect not better served by Hawaiian geologists teaching us aspects of science we did not previously understand? Even a clear telling of a story would be better. This feels like a ham handed endurance test of virtue. Culture is important, but perhaps also someday, "scientist" and "geologist" may be an equally important image in our minds of what it is to be "Hawaiian.” It's a living culture, not only an historical one. My sincere apologies if the voice I found to be an electronic, shaky, and annoying stereotype was an actual human being. Someone below suggested this, that the voice at the beginning was the synthesized one. I truly don’t believe that’s the case but if it is, my apologies. Note: there are two other videos in this series that provide scientific commentary and the footage is equally stunning. Many thanks to Big Island Video News for making these available.

@@davidsquall351 not to you, perhaps. To some it's a spiritual part of their culture. The woman speaking is explaining the name she nominated for the fissure. Geologic features and terrain are very spiritual for some cultures; the Australian aborigines for instance. It doesn't need to be something you personally believe in for you to show respect for someone else's culture and beliefs. You asked why your comment came across as racist; it's because your comment leaves no room for respect for the speaker. You don't need to have the same beliefs as another to show respect for them.
