We do a lot of shortening around here at least in Appalachia. Like I live near three towns called Kings Mountain, Bessemer City, and Cherryville. Kings Mountain is normal, but the others are respectively "Bess'mer City" and "Churrvull"

hey man! my mother has worked with special needs kids since the early 2000s, and one time she described to me a keyboard she really loved using when she would complete paperwork in the student computer lab; she outlined a keyboard with giant keys, that was ridiculously loud to type on, and it was only after it was sent away that she learned it was for one of her students, and did not in fact belong to the school! i immediately thought of this video upon hearing her description, and she confirmed that this was the model she worked with! really cool to see a alps switches put to real use!

I've seen other KZbinrs like Lazy Game Reviews, uxwbill and I think vwestlife make videos about these GreyStone keyboards. I suspect the reason wny the keys don't fire continuously when you hold them down is to stop chidren from typing one single character across the screen by holding the key down, but this can also be prevented by turning off the keyboard repeat feature in your operating system's keyboard settings. Most of the games I play require heavy use of the arrow keys and control and alt keys, this keyboard with its oddly positioned control key would make such games very uncomfortable to play.

The intentional single key press when holding a key down can actually be a great limitation to have when teaching computers/keyboards. I don't know about kids in particular, maybe really, really young ones might need it. However, old people constantly have this problem. So they have decided that they need to type something. They will now look down at the keyboard and carefully scan for that first key they need to enter. Then they will press it down and hold it down. Then they will look at the computer screen to ensure that the key has been entered. Then they look back down at the keyboard and, finally, release the key. And repeat.

8:57, that is actually an issue with some browsers. Some view inputs as 1 when you press and let go of the key. Where others will trigger a input every 0.001 second or something like that. This causes me to always write some script to try and fix or correct it. From this example, I'm guessing the automatic input is actually triggered by the keyboard and the browsers mimic it, but the weird browsers ignore it. Interestingly, I've honestly always thought it was just the browsers jacking with me, but this makes sense. Completely unrelated, but I learned something :D

Alright, after looking up I found some stuff out and why this happens. Typically the circuits in a keyboard are a grid-like pattern. A control cycles through the different rows or what ever they are called and checks if a key is down. Here is where it tells the OS blank key is being pressed. The OS then passes this to the browser or application, where if views it as tons of key strokes. However, some browsers and OSs will ignore them and only trigger each time the key is actually pressed. I'm not exactly sure on how or why this happens, but none the less it is a pain when dealing with JS and browser compatibility. Which as I mentioned above, in most cases requires some sort of middle script to create the same input type on all devices.

Know I'm late and all but the keys only firing for 8ms is probably a feature intended to help people who are physically disabled like people with MS so if they press a key for too long it doesn't just mess up their words. Cool keyboard!

I looked at their faq page and you can disable the "no run on" feature that prevents you from running forward in games. There should be a config prompt when plugging it in.

I have one of those things. I got it brand new in the box at a thrift store for $5. Mine is PS/2, and has that ABC/QWERTY switch. One thing not mentioned in the video is the key rollover. I tested mine to only have 2KRO, which is terrible for a mechanical keyboard. And for some reason, the F key actually activates when you let go of the key, not when you press it. Definitely a weird keyboard.

I think these where built to stand up to 4 and 5 year old kindergarten students more than any other age range, which is why they have the ABC layout option, and at that age kids learning not to hold down a key does not always register as fast as you would think it would as they are still trying to learn their Alphabet, and how to read.

you should try get a ducky from somewhere, easily the most solid keyboards I know of even compared with vintage boards, shame they use cherry switches only at the moment though

Chyrosran22 not 100% sure edit: possibly the old Ducky Legend, it doesn't have doubleshot caps or anything like the latest Ducky boards but the top case is simply a 5MM thick aluminium sheet, so combined with the steel plate that thing should be an absolute tank. I have never used or seen one so I don't know how it's constructed, but provided they filled the gap between the plate and top case with something like the did on the one (the one is just plastic all the way down from the top case to the plate with no gap) then it should be insanely strong, because obviously I doubt they have metal touching metal but even if it goes pcb - steel plate - plastic - aluminium top plate, considering ducky never seem to leave any gaps in their boards, it's going to be a solid chunk of material for about 3CM+ - so as I said, I've never used one but it must be extremely solid. I've only used their One TKL and an older Shine for barely any time at all. The One TKL is solid, with the plastic being so thick that it actually touches the plate (no gap between plate and plastic meaning it's about 1CM thick). The One and Shine 5 are the only current Ducky boards aside from some upcoming bluetooth one. But there is a quirk - the plastic for the bezel goes past the plate yet sits above the top case with the top case only being above the plate, not the top bezel. So what happens is simple, if you try bend it it doesn't move at all... except it makes a fairly loud creaking noise. So despite it not actually moving at all (more than a couple of mm is all you can bend it, you can't even see the bend). So basically, it's extremely solid and a lot more solid than you'd have expected from a keyboard that makes so much noise when you do try bend it. It doesn't make noise because it's badly built, rather just a slightly odd design choice which I think was mainly down to aesthetics rather than anything else. Either way, unless you're deliberately doing what I just said there isn't even a MM of flex, try press the case anywhere around the keys and it just doesn't move at all, because the plastic as I said above is so thick it touches the plate, so basically you're pushing against the super thick top case and steel plate + PCB together so it's like 2-3cm thick of material you're pushing against, plus the bottom case. So really, quite similar to how you'd expect a vintage keyboard to be, no skimping on the thickness of materials anywhere. No idea how the more expensive Ducky Shine 5 fares, I believe it may use a different OEM, could be worse, could be better. I know it's well liked anyway. There are loads of keycap choices on the Ducky One and some really odd options as well - the ABS caps are doubleshot ABS with translucent legends... even on non backlit models. Although there is another option, red legends on the exact same otherwise doubleshot ABS keycaps. And then finally, the models with non black keycaps have PBT dye sub keycaps of various colours. Except white ones with white ABS doubleshot. The caps aren't crazily thick but they're not half bad, just normal thickness. So there are huge amounts of variety and the One, even ones with transparent coloured cases. That's why it's sad that they still only use Cherry - if they used Gaterons they'd be a dream, because you won't find any keyboards with so many options from stock anywhere.

OK The Legend, according to the spec sheet, weighs 1.47 kg. There's no way something as light as that will hold up to something like a Battleship, 4707, or most Hall effect boards :p . I'm sure they're very tough for modern boards, but I think if you saw and felt some proper vintage boards, you'd be amazed ;) .

Chyrosran22 oh yeah some of the old vintage boards for sure like the model f are going to be a lot stronger (for obvious reasons), but the Ducky boards are firmly inside the range of Model Ms in terms of rigidity - looking at your unicomp video, the Ducky i have flexes no more than the industrial model m does (or possibly less) and far less than the unicomp, which isn't a bad showing. Even given that it weighs less, at least the one due to it's construction is stronger than it should be. Also keep in mind most of these new boards lack height (in upwards and top bezel), that's worth about 200G alone because there is just gonna be more material there. The Legend's top cover is aluminium which is fairly light, but once it's 5MM thick combined with the rest of the chassis I doubt you'd be able to get any bend in it at all. So yeah, it won't be as solid as a model F, but I'd be willing to bet most Model Ms would have a hard time even if the earlier ones do weigh far more. And certainly the later ones aren't even close, the Ducky One I have here which is a plastic case and steel plate is quite easily the stronger product.

Why are keyboards geared toward factory use always mechanical switches? Why do they not just go with cheap, easily replaceable rubber domes with dust covers? While granted I don't work in a factory, I have a job that necessitates frequently using a keyboard with very dirty hands. Usually places I've been use cheap ass keyboards with dust covers or plastic bags over them. I do recognize that this one has particular usage for people wearing bulky gloves, but there are many with normal sized keys that are geared toward factory use.

Kids wih disabilities for example low vision, slow motor skills (impair). "The keyboard has an option of assist mode to accommodate those who cannot press two or more keys simultaneously. NO RUN-ON FEATURE: only one keystroke is sent to the computer for each key depression, sent on release.
