Auntie Liz has done a LOT of great interviews. This is one of her best. Really interesting. Liz is clearly engaged and asking great questions, but is giving Mitch all the space he needs to answer. I 100% disagree on the timber trial. The entire spirit of the sport of strongman is testing athletes in unconventional ways, and no one in the early days of strongman was able to prepare for the events. Whoever came in the strongest man, won. I get that the sport has evolved and there are some staples, but complaining that there are new events that no athletes have done before seems plain dumb. It’s more exciting for the fans, and it shows who just has the strength to adapt to whatever is thrown at them. I’m hyped for that event

I am with you on this. Mitch comes from more of a sporting background than a physical culture background. He seems to be in favor of making it as fair and consistent as possible so the strongest and best prepared athlete always wins. Personally I like the history, tradition, and unpredictability of strongman compared to other sports.

I've heard some people who don't like Mitch in the sport say it was because he hadn't earned his stripes, and his attitude towards this event really shows it. I can't think of a non major show where they weren't coming up with random events that no one knows what will happen.

I think this attitude shows a different approach to the sport that I don’t agree with, but I understand where he is coming from and appreciate him being blunt about his opinions. As long as he doesn’t make excuses and just gets on with it, I’m cool with him expressing his feelings about things.

I completely agree. The ability to adapt to whatever is being thrown at them is part of the sport and it's this ''raw'' element that seperates Strongman from the other regulated strength sports BUT it must also be said that the weights in comps like the Arnolds can cause serious injury if an athlete doesn't know how to lift it safely and I think this is the concern Mitch has about new events with next to no information to go by.

I think they should increase the length of the Timber Carry so the difference between placings doesn’t depend on how fast the timekeeper presses the stopwatch. Maybe have it up and down the ramp for time. It could make the resetting of the apparatus easier on the setup crew also.
