I played this game only for few minutes about 20 years ago and the level design for me at that time was so weird and confusing, that I didn't even get through the first level. I know some of the soundtrack thanks to Doom WADs. It's actually kinda weird to hear some of these MIDIs in a game, which they originaly came from, now that I'm more used to hearing them in Doom.
@superbobor5 жыл бұрын
Yeah. Many people find this level of movement freedom confusing. Me too but I pushed through. Probably took more time studying the automap than actually playing the game. I was scared to play Doom when I was little but managed to finish the shareware version of Descent.

so you're 70 now? Incredible. Tank you for your story. Always wondered, how it had older people in 90's, when games were kinda new. If they were in same euphory as kids and teenagers back then. (I was teenager in 90's, and most of people that played games were younger) Hehe, had to be fun. Particulary first LAN parties, or at least null modem multiplayer session with friend (we used to move whole computer, yes also CRT monitor, to friends house or mine... without car... just in hands hehe). What the golden age.

Absolutely love the Descent franchise & you should totally do a playthrough. Also, if you haven't played Descent 3, you should. It was pretty good and really expanded the story. There were a few annoying mechanics, but the new level design, enemies, bosses, and story more than make up for that.

This game blew me away as a kid. The controls were iffy at first, being used to Doom first, but I was sucked in once I understood the controls. It'd even frustrate me at school to see kids who didn't understand what they were dealing with and ignore any tips I had to offer, the plebs. Last I played was... 3 years ago on Twitch. Beating it and D2 back to back and marking them off my list felt good. Reeaal good. A playthrough of this would be banging good.

I beat this on my Amiga 1200 (yes, Amiga!) with a 060 processor and a Voodoo 3 card socketed via the Mediator board. I beat it on every difficulty (and save-spammed like crazy too - I was never great at this game). It was something else and still is to this day. There is a modern reimagining of the game called 'Overload' - and it's pretty good.
@Astrobrant25 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I played Descent II when it came out. Got addicted, of course. I never played Descent I. In the second version they give you a guide bot. It's worth noting that Descent is a true 3D game. You have 360 degree maneuverability on all three axes. This makes it more interesting than Doom, but it can also get quite disorienting. There is no default up or down, except for the text on signs. And of course, no gravity, so it's very much like actually being in space. That's why the guide bot is so helpful. Thanks for the upload.
@doommaker40005 жыл бұрын
It's not like being in space, the inertia is almost non existent (comparatively)

@@doommaker4000 Well, sure, there's no inertia, but visually it is very similar, especially with the almost complete absence of up and down references.

Awesome, one of my first games! Looking forward any and all plays, either walkthough or even just goofing around - Descent has some fun cheat-codes, too. :) BTW Quake was dubbed the first really 3-dimensional FPS but really it was Descent that opened the third dimension for shooters, a year earlier. And yes, switching to 6 degrees of movement was indeed a huge entry penalty before a player properly learned to take advantage of, let's say vertical strafing or banking to fire missiles while just sticking out a part of the ship from around the corner.

Descent 1 = 27 levels + 3 secret levels Descent 2 = 24 levels + 6 secret levels I love this game, it was so much ahead of its time (3D enemies and lots of 3D shots, before Quake). And it was so much more fun to control 360 degrees compared to the "2D-runner games" like Duke3D and Doom.
