Mine arrived from Hornby well packed, undamaged at a fair price and is a great runner. Side steps are only clip on and come off easily if necessary. Isn't she just awesome. Another good and fair video Matt. Cheers. Pete

That's good to know about the steps. I hadn't realised they were detatchable if necessary for your layout.

Nice review - and I'm glad to see it's such a good runner! I did read the forums, and people seemed to be saying that most of the issues were with the unnamed one (R3840), whereas the 'British Enterprise' model (R3841) was of more consistently good quality. Obviously I have no way of verifying this for myself (as I own neither), but I thought I should throw it out there!

I definitely agree with you that people should have watched multiple reviews of a model before deciding to buy it and being an LNER fan. The W1 is a really good model and is up there in the best Hornby's steam locomotive models. The rear set of wheels floating isn't a major issue for me and they have done a good amount of liveries for models. Even if a number of them are not realistic and does look good pulling a train on you're layout.

Certainly an improvement over the south east finecast block of lead running around the layout demolishing the track

Problem is lots of people say its cheap, fragile and rubbish. When you are paying nearly 300 u deserve better and thank goodness for honest reviews

Decide for yourself. Don't let others tell you what its like go to a model shop and have a swiz. Don't think I've ever encountered a rugged model of a steam loco, or model in general, they are all pretty fragile in the right set of ham fists.

I don't have this one as I'm mainly GWR. This unique loco is growing on me. I think the front steps should have been included in the detail pack for optional fitting. I have other locos where I have left them off as they interfered with running. I think some of the problems have been caused by how the models have been treated in transit. Your review has made it grow on me more. Thanks for showing. Regards Paul.🚂🚃🚃🚃

It's a great model and to be honest you are the second person I have seen with good impressions of it. Unfortunately a few other reviewers have had a bad experience due to couriers who aren't careful handling other people's packages.

When a crystal chandelier is packed in a paper bag, why do people blame the shipper for the damage? Most damaged items I get can be squarely blamed on the mongoloid who packed it. They have no clue how to protect all 6 sides inside the box. You see the item on the bottom of the box and packing filling the remaining space. Or it's slamming around unrestrained. Think "SEAT BELTS".

I think it’s awesome, and the original was as well! Back in the 80’s nobody could have expected Hornby to make so many rare/complex Gresley engines, so it’s a dream come true. I nearly bought a kit-built W1 at a train fair for £70, and it had a perfect paint job. But the kit version is approx 70% the size it should be, which is pretty useless. I pre-ordered two W1’s from Kernow at £180 each, but I still have to wait another year for delivery. Shame about the wait, but I have saved £100 by not buying direct from Hornby. And hopefully by then some of the niggles will have been ironed out.

Hi Matt, you have have made a very true statement, as these beautuiful locos have been slatted all over you tube. i have a couple of these which at first they did need a bit of running in. first batches do tend to need a lot of running in. but i am sure the next batches of these locos the issue will be ironed out. as the tooling is ajusted. but that asside. these are very robust and reliable locomotives. i just glad hornby have produced this very rare loco. even though Simon had said a went a bit far with the testing them. thanks for sharing thoughts....Tony

I get the need to be objective, and you certainly have been Matt, but for the price you’re absolutely right, more metal would have been nice, and the floating rear wheels are really frustrating to me, you mentioned could it have been done better? Well, we need only look to the US; I have a 2-8-4 that a version of appears on a certain festive animated film, and there are 2 axles under the cab which spin. These wheels on the W1 almost bring to mind the earliest Triang C0:C0s where the centre axle on the driving bogie had some fixed semi circles cast in instead of real wheels. But, before we even start with this model, there was the controversy surrounding the reduced allocations and the fact that many customers had to have refunds returned from firms who had gone out and done the advertising for Hornby, many of which went to Hornby who magically did have enough supply, and paid full RRP seeing as by then it was only a ‘bit’ more and they really wanted the model, leaving Hornby to take their original wholesale margin, the retailers margin, and the gap to the not insignificant RRP, only to fail in some cases to even package the things properly. So, I suspect without that drama surrounding the model before it’s even landed on your rails, there’s going to be a lot of people in the mind of aspects not being good enough, and at these prices it’d need to be bloomin’ perfect. That’s just my tuppence trying to understand both sides of the debate as well as recognising that some people, as with most models, are receiving duds and others are spot-on

A good fair review, your example is good and runs well and yes as you say people should look at more than one review, that goes for anything not just model railways. It looks like a nice model but now especially with the price increase it is way too much and should have at least a full metal body which would have alleviated many of the quality problems during shipping. It is time Hornby really clamped down on quality issue it is not just this model, I've had motors burn out in about five minutes of running, motors over stressed with poor wire management and not engaging with gears over the last year or two.

Not going to lie Im still a bit mixed. I had a preorder which was cancelled by Hornby due to Brexit. At that moment I decided to just wait to see it first, since spending this kind of money on a model which simply doesnt fit both my era and time (1960 East Anglia) is something to think about. But the thing is, its just such a stunning model. If I modelled the 1930s ECMl I wouldve gotten it in a heartbeat but there are still so many locomotives I want to buy lol. Its definitely an absolutely stunning model though.

Blimey Matthew coming around that corner towards the of the video it took my breath away at the speed it made, but what I do disagree is why those steps sticking out and you mentioned about it could catch the platform 🤔. JJ

When Hornby have retified the faults i may think again.But for now i will not be buying this loco.The way the rear bogies look on curves i would accept it in the Railroad range at a cheaper price

Great video Matt, I would go as far to say it is decent but it does require improvements to make it worth what hornby are asking for it now which is £241, while I like this style I’m more partial to the rebuild version and hopefully may be able to get one one day, totally agree with you on the issue regarding the flangeless wheels, that to me on a model like this isn’t very good, hornbys early 2000s locomotives were better because they had the proper swivelling pony trucks and flanged wheels, the merchant navy and princess locomotives are good examples. Good of you to address people who only watch one channel for reviews, the people who do that are obviously incapable of making any decisions and need to be spoon fed everything, they need to start thinking for themselves and remembering that everyone else’s experiences are different.

brilliant review Matt! it's a stunning and very "interesting" looking model to say the least, obviously a dissapointment with some of the failures that hornby have sent out to the public, but i still like the model to be honest. can really see just how Powerful it really is in the last part of the video!

Your enthusiasm is applaudable and your observation on the rear pony truck is to the point. But two years in the make to come up with this very poor design ??? The value for money is questionable ! Anyway success with yours.

Personal I think it is utterly ludicrous that the trailing wheels are unflanged / unpivoted it's just stupid (and that applies to all Hornby locos that are like this) and that the lights are non functioning at this price point. Madness the buffers are sprung and the lights are dud to me. Looks fantastic though.
@HamStrains
@HamStrains 2 жыл бұрын
Little known fact though, or rather one that might not be desirable to know for people who enjoy lights is that the lights were not actually lit during the day. Its really strange but people want working lights to be accurate... then inaccurately use them 🤣 go take a look, even BR in the 1950s none of the marker lights are lit up in the day it would just be a waste of kero as you could hardly see them anyway. Thats why the lamp bodies are white or red to create a colour differentiation for signallers and such to see what type of train has passed them. All this said it wasn't uncommon to find these lights also not lit at night and serving only the purpose of being there for the sake of rules. So, accuracy? Yup, they don't light up, very accurate unless your railway is in darkness and even then... meh might not be accurate.
