I'm a fan of the LNER, especially for their non-conventional designs, like the L1 and the V2. In the novel I'm writing now, my main character is a station mistress of an LNER station in the Yorkshire Dales. I can say that the LNER is my number one choice in grouping engines. And their green livery is pretty nice too !

Wow Sam, what a collection you have there; a true museum in scale, just wow. The LNER certainly had star status locos with such charisma and quintessence class. The intricate livery alone was/is brilliant. One of course stands out for me, being the A4 in blue. Such a delight to look at :)

It's a shame how little of these survived.... My favorite classes are the Peppercorn A1s (and A2s to a lesser extent), the P2 (especially those with the bugatti nose and walschearts gear), the V2, 3 and 4, the Thompson B1, the J39/36, the O4 (and the O1 rebuilt versions), the J94 and the N2. The A4 also has to be there for sheer beauty and speed, but I do like the A1s a lot as well. Since watching the video, my eyes have been opened to the L1 as well. I don't know why but I really like the look of that thing.
@paulcaswell2813

Avoid the L1 - they were nicknamed 'cement mixers' due to the fact that they shook themselves apart. Yet more awful Thompson design.

The LNER is my favourite of the big four railways, and has just turned 100. Mallard is my favourite locomotive of all time and I'm fascinated by the GER and also GNR to an extent. I do sometimes fault the designs as locos from other railways can sometimes look better and green isn't my favourite livery, but I love the LNER nevertheless.

Only one V2 is preserved, the famous ‘Green Arrow’ and I saw it at the NRM a few years ago. Beautiful locomotive, and it’s also famous along with Flying Scotsman, Mallard and the K4, ‘The Great Marquess’ and the K1 2005, in the LNER and also is featured in the Christopher Awdry era of the Railway Series called ‘Thomas & The Great Railway Show’ where Thomas visits the National Railway Museum, when it was released in the 90’s I think.

All the GW engines look the same - they just get bigger or smaller! Archaic cab design, overcomplicated valve gear arrangements on their bigger engines, and basically sitting on their laurels from 1924 until 1948.

Yesterday I did think of you, Sam. As I found myself in the Adelaide hills. At one of the very Few Level crossings left on any Mainlines in Suburbia. A Goods Train probably heading to Melbourne. Hauled by Two monster Diesels, which took a total of 13 mins plus to Pass. With such an Assortment Of Old Wagons and Containers it was mind bending..! I think I only counted 6 that Didn't have Major Graffiti art on them. I would have filmed it, But by the time I had thought about it Half had already passed. I couldn't believe the Sorry state of some of the Rolling stock, it looked like 1950/60's stuff with Container flats following up...!! Just thought I'd slide this Rail Sighting in. As our Rail system Downunder is much to be Desired..! By maybe India or Nepal..!? Cheers All. 😎

Love that D49, a great looker for such an old model. I’ve had mine for about 25 years and it’s still a reliable runner. Given there’s a preserved member of the class (a rarity for LNER locos), I’m surprised Hornsby hasn’t retooled it.

LNER is the greatest of the big four. The Flying Scotsman you said was an A1 is an A3 Hornby did produce the A1 in Model form and it did not have the extra plate on the sides of the Smokebox. The Plates were needed to cover the end of the Superheater as it was too wide for the Original Smokebox. Martin. (Thailand) Yorkdale LNER Preservation Railway.

Hornby's original 2004(?) 'Great Northern', in full GN livery was the finest Pacific model Hornby ever made (and of course an A1 too). If you look at the valve gear at the cylinder end, Hornby even correctly modelled the longer Combination Lever which pulled the front of the Union Link lower - which was correct for the short-travel engines. I wonder how many people spotted it... ;-)

Sam - the V2 was originally designed for fast freights. The first of the class, 'Green Arrow', was named after the LNE's premium freight service! Both your Gresley unstreamlined Pacifics were A3s LOL! Look at the square covers each side of the smokeboxes - it's present on both, denoting a 220lb boiler (the defining feature of the A3). The Gresley A1 lacks these covers...The 'banjo' dome appeared in 1934, and the absence of such in no way denotes an A1...

The V2 was designed as a fast freight, although it was used on passenger trains. You are right to be confused with LNER classification because locos would change so A1 Gresley or A1 Thompson. As far as Thompson being contentious, it has to be remembered that the LNER had the least standardised fleet of all the pre-nationalised companies, with the GWR having the greatest standardisation and the LMS following suit. Thompson knew from experience the maintenance and costs related to this with the high cost of spares. His 2 cylinder B1 was on par with the Black 5 and Hall and there were frame issues with the P2 so perhaps there were reasons to rebuild them. His desire was to build a range of standard designs in the same way as the GW and LMS. He also realised the cost of having 3 cylinder locomotives hence the production of the L1 and B 12. Maybe it was the way he set about the changes that he is such a contentious character.

I think the reason the J39 is so popular is because it was a character known as “Tavish” in Simon A Martin’s series “The British Railway Stories”

I have to comment this Sam and the Comment Community because I can’t take it anymore: I’ve been very interested in the NER 66 aka “Aerolite”. He was being rebuilt many times until he became a 2-2-4T loco. He pulls the railway’s mechanical engineer on a special train. He is the only loco of his class and was preserved at the NRM. We always forgot that it is this loco that Whiff was based on, though the character himself was quite controversial, imo. I dunno about Mattel or Gullane or Alcroft merchandising T&F but I believe that he should have been part of the T&F model loco fleet, for railway enthusiasts, because of him being very rare and unique. Tbh, after seeing many of his episodes, Whiff is my favorite character in the CGI series, especially his US dub character because the voice actor gave character to him and all the more reason for me to be very interested to him.

The J83 at 3:38 is an ex North British Railway D class built under CME Matthew Holmes long serving time with the NBR. First delivered in 1901. These should be more well known as they had one of the lowest maintenance costs of any LNER class, and had the highest mileage of any LNER 0-6-0T. Only three J83s failed to record 1 million miles during their lifetime, and No. 9830 managed to record a total of 2 million miles. Always a desirable feature for a railway. But all scrapped by 1962. The clever systematic LNER locomotive classification system had all the ex NBR 0-6-0T locos grouped in classes J81 to J88. The same system with the ex NBR 0-6-0 tender engines grouped from J31 to J37. For example your named Hornby J36 also produced under Holmes. I recall your L&NER lettered one, but missing here. Pity the Hornby J83 is such an ordinary, inaccurate and basic model. Unlike the outstanding J36 from Hornby. The LNER classification system also grouped other constituent companies locomotives together. The LNER encyclopaedia online will open your eyes to the system so that eventually once a class letter and number is given you can tell from this the wheel arrangement, tank or tender and which company it came from. The variety of LNER Locomotives is an eye opener, as you say, and the class system is so informative in a succinct manner unlike all the qualification and duplication of the others in the big four. Might be worth a vid explaining the LNER classification system using examples from your fleet and photos to open the eyes of those able to watch and learn. Maybe a vid on the chaos of the other groups lack of system. Eg the LMS had about ten or more different locomotive classes as 4F . Some tender some tank. Some 4-6-0, some 0-6-0.

The LNER is the greatest of course. First loco to reach 100mph. World speed record holder. Went to Newcastle, the most important city in the UK. :-) You should get a streamlined B17 Sam to compare with the A4s. Lovely engines, Sam. A bit of a pity imo that you didn’t run the P2; but your video, your choices of course. I’ll admit that I’m a bit partial to the P2, the V4, and the *rebuilt* Hush-Hush, simply because they either had unrealized potential*, or simply being overshadowed by the other more numerous and famous Pacifics despite being more capable or having their bad track record.** Fortunately we got a new-build P2 in the works and then a new-build V4, and Hornby with the new P2 run and the Hush-Hush. Can’t wait! *The P2 never got the better pony trucks from the V2 for better tracking, and more V4s were supposed to be build before Gresley died, and Thompson introduced the admittedly capable B1. **The Hush-Hush, when rebuilt, had its mediocre marine boiler replaced by anA4 boiler with a larger firebox. This gave it more tractive effort than an A4 and a roomer cab for the driver and fireman, yet only the one was built despite these improvements in performance and creature comforts.

a bit off topic, and I've also mentioned it before, but I'd love to know your opinions on automatic transmission fluid to treat the tracks. I've tested it both by using 40 year old tracks without cleaning them, and by soaking plastic parts in it, both had no negative results whatsoever, and a friend of mine even said to me that if he's known about ATF a decade ago he wouldn't have gone from 2-rail (Fleischmann, Roco, Piko, trio etc) to 3-rail (marlin). he uses it on his N-scale layout after itold him about it, and I'm sure you could help many people by pointing out how great it works.

Thanks Sam, another great session to whisk us away from the madness for a few minutes. A4s all the way for me. Still GWR for me if I had to pick just one, but love em all! Something about Crimson Lake that I am looking forward to! Cheers...

Hey, just a suggestion, you think you could make "Gordon's hill" a little steeper?, just to make it atleast look like a bump in the set

Very interesting Sam. My interest in model railways only started midway through 2018 so I am still learning. I still don’t understand how you tell the difference between freight, mixed and passenger locomotives. It would be great if you would cover than sometime. The LMS video is the one I am most looking forward to. I have bought many of these as I live in the East Midlands like you and the exhibition layout I am working on featured LMS, then more military stock.

The difference is down to the power classification assigned by the railway that produced it. A passenger locomotive is one that has a higher power classification for passenger work than frieght, eg LNER class A3 is rated 7P6F so is passenger. Mixed traffic engines have the same power classification for both frieght and passenger work, eg, an LMS black 5 is 5P5F. or 5MT. Frieght locomotives likewise have frieght classification higher then passenger. It is quite unusual for heavy freight engines to display their passenger classification, but they did have them.

Start a narrow gauge model railway. A narrow gauge model railway will definitely be cool. Get N scale narrow gauge engines and also N scale track for your Narrow gauge model railway.
