I find when you are changing strings on a Bigsby it helps to take the string and rap the end with the ball around your finger and put a semi round crimp in the string so when you place it around the retaining rod it has the proper form to hold itself on the pin. It just helps rather then trying to put a straight string over a round rod.

Great video. I have a Duesenberg Les trem 2. You can fit it in 5 minutes and changing strings is a breeze. And it has exactly the same smooth action. And they're 70£ UK. And you won't need a drill or vibramate

Yup. Its a Bigsby and not a Bigsby at the same time. GFS has a similar vibrato. Like the old Japanese vibratos they are similar bit still not a Bigsby.

One thing I will add to this. Bigsbys and Wide Swing Tremelos are great for blue notes and gentle waivers. For those who do not know what a blue note is its the sound between an A note and a B note...not one or the other. On fretted instruments you can bend up to a blue note but not down. Both vibrato sytems let you bend down. On a Synchronized Tremelo like a Stratocaster or a Floyd Rose, the springs make it next to impossible to bend down to blue notes since they are more extreme. Hitting the trems on my Strat and Strat clone are more like a half step down so I miss the blue note. If you want to divebomb notes on a guitar the Bigsby is the wrong way to go. It's not enough of a bend to satisfy a shredder and since its 1940s technology the stability is not what you are looking for. There's a reason Brian Setzer has locking Sperzels on his signiture guitar.

Bigsby is great. But. It does change the tone. On P90 guitars I always find for the better. It removes some of the low mids and adds some upper range bite. On a good Les Paul .. hard no. On semis or hollow bodies? Hell yeah!

Old trick if you got less than $1 = put a big wide rubber eraser (or other such stuff) against the string ends on the pins when stringing. Old trick if you got any mech skills at all = Pull out the string pins. Drill the holes bigger. Smooth the string exit hole's inside dge. No more swearing at Bigsby stringing ever again. My votes: Bigsby style for blues & country. Rose style for craziness. Jazzmaster style for surf. Strat trem style for another reason to drink.

My question is, does the Bigsby change the feel of the guitar or the action?
@gringogreen4719
@gringogreen4719 4 жыл бұрын
Yes. You have more metal. It changes tone and feel. The Vibramate is significantly higher than if you deck the Bigsby by direct mounting to the body. That changes the angle. Decked, more of a V dive between the bar, the tension bar, and the bridge. The Vibramate, more of a gentle C. On my Ibanez in my pic, it was originally a jazz box with a trapeze type tail piece and a wooden bridge (look up a stock Ibanez AK 86). Once the "Vintage Vibrato," aka Bigsby and roller bridge went on there, HUGE difference in tone and playability. The nice thing with a Vibramate and a Bigsby is you can switch the guitar back to a stop tailpiece and all you are out is strings. If you want to know what a decked Bigsby is like try an Epiphone Wildkat or a Schecter PT Fastback.

I would say keep your tele's bridge and just buy a different guitar with a Floyd Rose bridge. I've had my vintage reissue tele for about 7 years now, and at one point I wanted to switch the bridge. I'm so glad I didn't. I'd much rather spend money on more used guitars than on modifications. But that's just me. :)

Bigsbys are for blue notes, they are not dive bomb systems. I would suggest more of a metal type of Tele style like an Ibanez or a Schecter PT.

Well, what if.. i make a guitar case for my brand new guitar. I'm not talking about a carrying case here. I'm talking about a two piece clip-on case that will protect your guitar in situations where you drop your guitar while you're playing it. Damn! Locking tuners don't affect tuning stability, they just make string changes quicker
@nbdzero
@nbdzero 4 жыл бұрын
They can affect stability, less winds around the peg head so less string length to catch or slip!
@gringogreen4719
@gringogreen4719 4 жыл бұрын
Locking tuners can help stability. You know what else helps? Winding the strings properly. "My guitar wont stay in tune!" "No shit! You have two to three winds on that post and you did a sloppy job on it." Depending on the string guage, you want the winds to go to close to the washer on the tuning head. If the first wind goes over the top then it will pinch the string with the winds under it. By winding the strings closer to the headstock you get more downward pressure, less space to slip and more tunning stability.
