Interesting, as a mechanical engineer, I wonder if adding some sound proofing padding to the exterior of the shell will help reduce the low frequency background noise of the Shark. Maybe worth a test.
@bigtb17173 жыл бұрын
Possibly, but blocking low frequencies generally requires something pretty substantial. Probably wouldn't be super practical, but I wouldn't mind doing a bit more testing with this mic at some point.

Thanks for your video. I just watched a bunch of parabolic mic vids here on youtube and yours why by far the most informative. In particular the voice test. I work as a recording engineer and record music. Have never had the chance to use one of these things and have been curious for some time if there could be some wild application of the parabolic thing in the studio. Seems like it could work for something. Maybe surround sound?

BTW, do you ever use Izotope RX for your bird recordings?
@bigtb17173 жыл бұрын
Glad it was helpful. I'm actually planning to do another video with it. I'm waiting on a long shotgun mic I ordered in April. When that finally arrives I plan to do a comparison in a few different situations.
@bigtb17173 жыл бұрын
No, never used Izotope software.
@davewestner3 жыл бұрын
@@bigtb1717 Cool, hopefully will catch it. I'd be curious to hear the parabola with something other than a lav mic, although it looks like there's not really enough room to put much else in there. Not sure what you record mostly, but for example, if you're looking to get rid of car sounds in bird recordings, there's some pretty powerful tools made by Izotope called RX that is really good at getting rid of all kinds of noise in recordings. There's probably a million YT videos on the subject. It's pretty remarkable how well it works. Of course, it's more fun to get away from the car sounds if you wanna record birds! cheers!

Could you test whether it picks up a normal conversation at a distance?
@Reriiru2 жыл бұрын
To minimize bass response what you could do is this. Get Moongel (or any drum dampening gel pads), on the back of the dish stick it right on the center, then stick four pads half way cross between the center of the dish and it's edge, if it doesn't help stick some on the edge as well. My theory is that the dish doesn't just act as a reflector, but also acts as a membrane, and if you dampen it from the back (without messing the reflective patterns inside the dish) it should reject better. It's just a theory, though.

Big tb what would be a good setup for having a microphone in your backyard that runs to a speaker in the house 75 feet away? I want if to listen for someone moving around my yard at night
@bigtb17172 жыл бұрын
You probably would not want a directional mic like this. You'd probably want some type of weather-resistant, omni-directional mic. You could run a cord into the house and connect it to a pre-amp or interface and then to a speaker from there, or get something wireless, but then you'd have to deal with keeping that safe from the elements and limited battery life.
@mgabrielle23433 жыл бұрын
just the thing, add 4 microphones in the center, feed to a computer signal processor, and have a 10 foot wide dish, you could pin point an enemy drone from about a mile, and couple the processor outputs to a servo driver and gun system, you could knock down a hostile drones out of skies.

Have just been watching their own samples on the sound shark yt channel, then searched for parabolic mics and this video came up... And based on this the MKE 600 is the superior choice - the omni directional nature of the lapel in the center of the parabola doesn't reject off-axis sources nearly as well as the hypercardioid nature of a good shotgun mic.
@bigtb17173 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I think in particular, low frequency sounds/rumble don't seem to get rejected well at all from the Sound Shark. But high frequency sounds are rejected very well. So it will partly depend on the environment you are in and what you are trying to record. I agree though that for general use, a shotgun mic is better for most people, and convenient to use. But if you were somewhere away from traffic rumble and were trying to record specific bird songs, or something like that, the dish would probably be pretty good. I'm planning to do more with this mic, but I'm waiting on another mic that I planned to compare it with. Unfortunately, I ordered that mic over 4 months ago and it still hasn't shipped.

was there a hiway in front of the camera? it's picking up urban noises lol

Not super close, but I do live in a semi-urban area. There is a highway not too far away, and there's a fairly busy road pretty close.

WOW - Do you think the sennheiser 600 is to directional for crowd laughter at a comedy show?
@bigtb17179 ай бұрын
It depends on where it is placed. If it is placed a short distance from the crowd, pointing toward the crowd, it would probably do fine. If it is down among the crowd, something other than a shotgun mic would probably do a better job.

Hi I like to film Red deer in the rut but I would like to improve the sound when the stag Roar now i just pickup the sound with the mic build in the camera (nikon p950) I was thinking about buying a shutgun mic like the boya by-bm3032 but wil it acualy improve the sound when its All from 50 to 300 yards from the deer.? Or will it be the same as if I just use the build in mic.
@bigtb17173 жыл бұрын
I don't have any experience with that particular microphone (or that camera), but if it provides a clean, low noise signal with decent gain then it could possibly improve the audio you get from the deer. If it is a cardioid or super-cardioid pickup pattern then it may also reduce ambient noise and that could help as well. However, it's also possible that your camera has an "audio zoom" feature. If it has that you will lose it when using an external microphone. Audio zoom is just a digital processing that a camera does to the audio using two or more microphones built into the camera. It essentially compares the signals from various microphones and attempts to filter out any sounds that aren't coming from directly in front of the camera. I don't actually know if the P950 has that feature, or how well it works if it has it. But if it has it and it works well, a super short shotgun mic like the BM3032 may not represent an improvement over what you have in-camera. It still might, but unfortunately, I can't say for sure.

The sound quality of your video is really good. I want to know what equipment was used for recording
@bigtb17173 жыл бұрын
In my sound booth I use a USBPre 2 interface from Sound Devices. In the two videos you asked about I was using a Lewitt LCT 440 Pure microphone. I have the audio interface connected to a laptop and use Reaper recording software. I generally don't do any editing or EQ.
@bigtb17173 жыл бұрын
The sound booth helps and is something I made myself. It is just basic framing with 2x4s with Rockwool insulation in between and covered with felt from a fabric store. Really basic, but it makes for a decent recording space.

Thankyou very much for explaining the differences! I wonder if you try the new amazing audio plugin called Waves Clarity VX? I think it out performs RX (if you can believe that) in voice recordings. VX has an internal type low cut in the algorithm, but it is much more than just a static Low cut Eq. I would be willing to run your "Shark" 30 ft audio thru it and send you the results, I'm so curious!

Is that a general comment about the Sound Shark, or are you requesting I review a better parabolic mic? I have considered getting a larger dish, but they basically start at $1,000 and I don't really have a use for them, so it's hard to justify.
