......"EXCELLENT!"......I once saw a similar project, but, instread of using a "parabolic" reflector to "collect" MORE sounds, they used a "HYPERBOLIC" shaped tube, (shaped like the flared end on a trumpet, to "EXCLUDE ALL sounds, except those entering directly in line with the AXIS of the trumpet-shaped barrel. The entering sound, could then be amplified, as needed, without inclusion of a lot extraneous/peripheral sounds being included into the final mix. This might be a valuable approach, for trying to gather a specific sound source, while eliminating all kinds of surrounding, distracting, sounds!

Using a 'funnel at least of plastic of generous size, insert the microphone capsule through the tube and on the 'other side apply a metal plate in the direction of the "Fire" and it should still fit.

one of the good project that is DOABLE ! Yes I knew, it is 4 years ago, but still a good diy project. Some suggestions to improve: wind noise reduction: put some 'fake fur' surrounding the mic. Ambient noise: add Tone Control (bass treble control) or even better, an equalizer to filter out unwanted frequencies. I think there is no point to put 2 microphones since they are positioned extremely close together, so no stereo effect created.

Try an sesq83 or sesq84 for the dish for an improvement. There are others. If you really want to get serious on the amp you can use a device that was originally designed to pull in voices from 1.6 miles away with a 10 foot dish. Has high gain and tunable filters for voice. Get a copy of The Basement Buggers Bible if you can...then you can ride around in your car and feel special.

Hi your device and video is so great but i'm a totally beginner. I have a few questions: 1.) Who i must connect the negative wire from the battery in the board? 2.) I seen in the video that you have connect the green and the black wire together from the right built-in-mic and soldered on the left contact from the mic. Who i must connect the black wire on the board from this both wires and on which contact from the parabolic-mic-female-jack i must connect the green wire? The green cable from the right contact of the right built-in-mic goes in the DPDT-switch, that i can see. 3.) Who i must connect the black wire from the left built-in-mic in the board? The green wire from the left built-in-mic i must connect on the underside of the DPDT-switch, right? 4.) The both green cables on top which come from the DPDT-swith, on which contacts of the parabolic-mic-female-jack i must connect? 5.) The black wire which going in the Ground from the headphone-jack i must connect on pin 2 from the left LM386, is that correct? I know that pin 2 & 4 of the left LM386 are connected together and this connected to the right LM386 with pin 2 &4 too. Sorry that i have so much questions, but i will build this device and please my friend can help me???? Or can you eventually make a remake video of this unbelievable device who you show how you place and solder all the parts on the board and how you connect all the cables on the parts? But from this updated device with the "DPDT-switch" and "the parabolic-mic-female-jack-line-in" from this video! I can send you bucks with Paypal when you can make this video. You inspired me to make this device this weekend, but I forgot you made a new video and I just watched the old ones. The mics I got were pretty small about 5mm diameter, and they seem to be not quite as sensitive as yours. The seem to have a pretty limited range, ie they amplify great on a short distance if that makes sense. I found a lampshade for $1 yesterday that I'll try to make into a parabolic mic, though I think I'll just make it mono for simplicity to start with. Thank you for a great video. If you find more gadgets from this book that would be great!

say what? regulators are failing. sounds like your mobo's are overheating to me. may wanna build an external fanbox and duct the output air into the rear of the chassis.. filter it as well. I used a 4" tornado squirrel cage fan.. its been running 20 years.. no mobo failures. I switch the 115vac fan on/off with a 12vdc SCR running off of one of the 12vdc rails via the PSU. not only that EVERYTHING inside the box is cooled down not only the CPU (whose fan I remove they're "toys" compared to the fanbox). CPU runs around 90 F degrees, mobo around 110. downside? yeah noise may wanna put that fanbox in the next room and use dry vent hose to redirect. I use a 12" X 12" X 1" filter replace it every quarter.

I built this but it doesn't work, all i get is a loud humming out of the earphones that sounds like a motor boat, i tried a couple of different lm386 ic's and two different mics but no change it still sounded like a motor boat, i checked the circuit and rebuilt it from scratch with no joy.
@electronicsNmore7 жыл бұрын
You definitely did something wrong, because it does work, and it's fairly easy to assemble. Probably used the wrong pins on the IC.
@jonnie88677 жыл бұрын
I think the lm386 ic's i got off ebay are faulty or fake, i stopped the humming by adding a 470uf cap from vcc to ground then i could hear low level audio from the mic, i removed the 10uf that goes between pin 1 and 8 as this controls the amplification rate from 20 to 200, the audio remained at the same level, when i replaced the 10uf it did not amplifier x200, i can only put the problem down to inferior ic's from china, i tried all 50 and they were all the same.. I will order some branded lm386's from a reputable electronics store and try again, i built another one of your projects, listen through walls amplifier , it's works great, keep up the good work.

I think a lot of the background noise is from your electronics. You need a low noise front end. The 386 is known for it's high noise. duckduckgo.com/?q=Is+the+LM386+noisy&t=ffsb&atb=v155-4b_&ia=web You might want to build the "Curiously Low Noise Amplifier" in the middle of this page and compare background noise between the two. www.techlib.com/electronics/audioamps.html That would be an informative video.
@electronicsNmore5 жыл бұрын
You don't realize how sensitive the circuit is. There is no noise, you're hearing wind and road traffic in the distance. Thanks for watching!
@mavamQ5 жыл бұрын
Yes, I understand you have a gain of 200 from your inherently noisy LM386s. I gave you a link to 100 articles on how noisy the 386 is, and some ways to quiet it down a little. Prove it to yourself, remove the mic from the dish, put it on your bed under a pillow, with your gain a 200, how much noise do you hear? that's a rhetorical question, you will hear a slight roaring and lots of hiss.
@kristianblerche84438 жыл бұрын
maybe a dead cat on the mike could help reduce wind noise.
@electronicsNmore8 жыл бұрын
+Kristian B Lerche Won't work. You will end up reducing the sensitivity of the device. What you heard along with the radio was road traffic and wind noise in the direction of the radio. You can greatly reduce the background noise using computer software.

Why is a TRUE parabolic surface FAR better than a spherical surface or the curved cover of a trash can ? If one does NOT prepared to study the effects of a sound wave reflected by a parabolic surface then don't bother to read what I have written. Both a TRUE parabolic surface or a Spherical surface or even a curved cover will reflect a sound wave of a person whispering say 10 meters away to a simple $2 microphone. The TRUE parabolic surface will reflect the sound wave from every point of its surface to a specific point the "focus" of that particular parabola a simple mike will allow that sound to be amplified with little or NO distortion. A Spherical surface will NOT reflect the sound wave to a "focus point: the sound will be reflected over a relatively large area causing the microphone output to be much weaker (x10 times weaker , the curved cover much weaker (x 50??) But FAR WORSE property of a sphere or arbitrary curve , Such NON -parabolic reflectors will also destroy the quality of the sound. A short, abrupt "Click" sound will become much weaker , the DISTORTiON will be so severe that human voices will be unrecognizable or mostly likely impossible to understand ! observerms
