In the summer of 2019, I was on a trail crew in Colorado. We were away from everything. A woman on my crew played this song on guitar frequently and beautifully. For a long time, her rendition was the only one I knew. That was probably the best summer of my life. Months later, after returning to college, I heard this recording play in a movie theater downtown and teared up. Amazing song, very special for many reasons.

In a way, I see this song as a fantastic response to a common question among poets and other writers -- "Why write?" -- and attempting to do so via an elaborate process of elimination (the string of negatives) -- hoping to come to a fundamental, solitary truth... On may 9th 2020 my grandmother died. I never really got to know her well since she had dementia and possibly schizophrenia. I think she was 78. She didn't really want anything to do with me since she didn't want to be seen as old. My dad told that she used to worry a lot, about everything in her life and she felt as if she had wasted everything by worrying. She had kicked my mother and father out her house when my mother was pregnant with me. I do wish i had more time to know her. When she died i tried to act sad but i didn't really know her well.
