By now, everyone knows that mindfulness meditation is good for you-but what's still surprising scientists is just how quickly it works. Ten minutes of meditation won't make you a better mutlitasker-there's no such thing, as psychologist and science journalist Daniel Goleman explains-but it will make you more adept at switching tasks and returning to a deep level of concentration more quickly after a distraction. Every time you practice meditation, you’re strengthening the neural circuitry for focus and training your brain away from mind-wandering. Beyond the need to concentrate for work, pleasure, or to overcome negative emotion, mindfulness meditation can also help to manage disorders like PTSD, anxiety, and Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD). This last one particularly has shown incredible results, and Goleman cites one exercise a teacher in a rough neighborhood of New York City practices routinely with their class of seven-year-old kids, over half of which have special needs like ADD and autism. That daily ritual keeps the class environment calm and constructive, and is empowering the children with self-control strategies early on. The scientific research evidence on the benefits of meditation is already compelling, and there are major studies underway, which Goleman expects will reveal many more insights that can be used to instruct creative, educational, and mental health practices. Daniel Goleman and Richard J. Davidson are the authors of Altered Traits: Science Reveals How Meditation Changes Your Mind, Brain, and Body.

DANIEL GOLEMAN
Daniel Goleman is a psychologist, lecturer, and science journalist who has reported on the brain and behavioral sciences for The New York Times for many years. His 1995 book, Emotional Intelligence (Bantam Books) was on The New York Times bestseller list for a year and a half.
Goleman is also the author of Ecological Intelligence: How Knowing the Hidden Impacts of What We Buy Can Change Everything. The book argues that new information technologies will create “radical transparency,” allowing us to know the environmental, health, and social consequences of what we buy. As shoppers use point-of-purchase ecological comparisons to guide their purchases, market share will shift to support steady, incremental upgrades in how products are made - changing every thing for the better.
His latest book is Altered Traits: Science Reveals How Meditation Changes Your Mind, Brain, and Body, which he has co-authored with Richard Davidson reveals the science of what meditation can really do for us, as well as exactly how to get the most out of it.

Daniel Goleman: What’s surprising, at least to scientists, is that the benefits from meditation show up right from the beginning. You can do, for example, mindfulness-that’s a very popular meditation-if you do mindfulness practice ten minutes a day or ten minutes three times over the course of a day something remarkable happens to your attention, and it has to do with the fact that we’re all multitasking these days. People on average look at their email about 50 times a day, they look at their Facebook 20-something times a day and that's just the tip of the iceberg. There's Instagram, there's your phone calls, there’s whatever it is you have to do. And what this means for attention is that we’re challenged. Focused attention is an endangered species, however, we need that focus to get work done well. So it’s a real problem and meditation, it turns out, even at the beginning, has some of the answers.
It goes like this: when you’re really intensely focused on that one thing you have to do or you want to do-the paper you’re writing or the project you’re working on-then you think, 'Oh, I better check my email,' and then that leads to your Facebook and that leads to the phone call, it leads to-we call this multitasking. The brain actually does not do multitasking, it doesn’t do several things at once in parallel, rather it works in serial and it switches very rapidly from one thing to the next.

He’s right. Most of us can’t even listen to this video without reading the comments. Our brains have learned to constantly be going going going. Some of y’all will stop reading this by now after seeing how long it is, and that’s an issue with your attention and concentration and is further proving my point. We have to be stimulated at all times. And then you add caffeine and things on top of it and our brains actually probably hate us. Technology is probably most responsible for the increase in mental disorders like depression and anxiety. Just remember, it’s okay to be slow. It’s okay to take it slow. I know your work day probably has to be fast paced and stressful and that’s okay too. Just take the time to breathe for 5 minutes if that’s all the free time you get in a day. For me, meditation is almost something I HAVE to do everyday. It’s not really an option for me. Almost everything we take in on a daily basis is bad for our mental health, remember that. News is bad for us. Work can be bad for us. Rarely do we take in positive information. Good Sleep, meditation , exercise and a good diet are the only sure ways to make sure you bring in good energy. Think about it, If your sleep is whack, your diet is whack, you don’t meditate and you don’t exercise.... you have no room to complain about being in a bad mood, Because you have the answer right there. Life is hard but it doesn’t have to be harder when free tools are at your disposal at every waking second. Good luck y’all. Off to meditate I go.

I have been diagnosed with Dysthymia and ADHD and Social Anxietv. I get mad all he time for no reason and I lack social skills because of the anxiety and I'm actually switching schools because there is a school (I recommend you check it out) it's called PACE and it's an all girls school for people who have mental health issues which cause them to make bad decisions or get bad grades or even if you just need counseling along with school. Every student at PACE has their own counselor to make sure you follow your goals.

I have researched and found out that shrooms are very helpful , it has really helps to reduce anxiety and depression . I would love to try magic mushrooms but I can't easily get some , Is there any realiable source I can purchase one

Islam has something called Salah(prayer) it's a combination of yoga exercises and meditation exercises. As it encourages all these qualities. This is might not have been intentional in its making but it's remarkable how it works.

I've struggled with social anxiety for the majority of my life. After practicing attention training using CBT techniques I have seen amazing results, this video resonates perfectly with my experiences. Great video.

I personally have PTSD and use mindfulness meditation twice a day. It really helps overcome the anxiety and worries. However I still think we need to fight hard not to let religious people take credit for this psychological discovery, or use it as a tool to convert vulnerable people to their religion.

One of the first things is what the Bible says taking EVERY thought captive and bringing it to the obedience of Christ. ??? I'm an atheist but what does it has to do with religions? You should know, they ALL have sort of meditations and mindfulness since centuries. It's even for one of them the center of the belief system, Buddhism.

I took a massage and relaxation class in college before my harder classes, and we would take the hour to meditate, mind you i never did it before. And it was one of the things that made me focus more clearly on subjects I didn't understand. And I passed that math class.

Be proud of yourself if you've made it through the entire video while staying focused on his face and words without reading the comments while watching. I recommend guided meditation and mirror work. Mirror work is when you look at yourself in the mirror while saying uplifting loving and positive words to yourself, a few minutes a day will shift things for the better your life will change for the greater good. Its the most basic ancient thing. Not letting the mind/brain wonder off helps us to have more focus. Mindfulness and meditation are free from biases, dogma etc. Just stay more concentrated and handle stress better trough more focus, awareness. Simple massage.

It's a common habit that people sometimes (or most times) try to accomplish multiple tasks at the same time; we tend to think of what what have waiting in our queue before we even start the what's next. We think that preparation is an investment of time, sometimes it is, but mostly it leads us into a state of noxious anxiety. Taking it slow, one step at the time will not only allow us to accomplish more in less time, but it also make us proficient at it.

Was diagnosed with ADHD in college. Have been practicing mindfulness meditation with a balance of healthy diet and exercise, best habits I adopted. Simply Ritalin or any other prescribed meds just don’t work unfortunately. Anyone who is suffering and is feeling lost, I strongly suggest to seriously give its try without pre-judging it.

I would like to point out that it seems a common experience for people with ADHD to think/focus better while doing more than one thing. For us it helps to do something physical like running or walking while trying to focus on something requiring a lot of mental energy and focus.

From experience, The instant cure for anxiety is to understand the fact that there are infinite amount of possible outcomes in this universe and our brain only thinks of a handful . A bad outcome can become the means of a good outcome in the future. Just like that a good outcome can become the means of a bad outcome. For example, you lost your job (bad thing). But then you got a new job which is better ( bad thing led to a good outcome.) It's an endless cycle. So just go with the flow and don't think about it . 😄 Goodluck.

I cannot help but relate two things to multiple times a day meditation: and mindfulness practices 1) the first and most minor relattion is that a lot of religion advocate practicing praying, for example chanting meditation, or quite meditation, 4 ot 5 times a day! Morning, Noon, Afternoon(, Evening) and night. I am thinking 6 am when one wakes up, and every 3 hours ending at 9 pm. **2)** And More Importantly: There are research on what is called Micro Naps where periodically through out the day, one stops and quiets ones miind. In fact, Da Vinci and Thomas Edison were known to take regular naps Every 3 hours or so! Also I love the reference to children in Spanish Harlem and Mindfulness practices. ❤

Switching tasks/attention in the brain looks similar to switching threads in a computer program. These threads can run concurrently (not parallel) on 1 processor core, but there is a thread switching cost.

Surprisingly, Answer to my every concern regarding myself as a personality is mindful meditation. This is like a doctor's prescription to me now. I have to take it to survive.

This is a step behind the true solution in my opinion. I have found that the best meditation is not mindfulness, but it is to actually discard from your mind. Mindfulness just "allows" the thoughts, but they're still there, and it's a continuous process of having to manage and deal with it. I'd rather fix the root cause, so I've found actually reflecting and discarding the thoughts to be infinitely more effective in my experience :)

I love mindfulness , I meditate so much. However there is some cautions that need to be known . Becoming too self aware can cause loss of sleep and sometimes more anxiety and boredom . I’ve been feeling more anxious lately than not .. I get horrible nights I can’t sleep . Too much of meditation can be harmful as well

I'm a 16 year old kid, and my mind is constantly wondering off. I don't even notice when I begin to wonder off. So I want to make my attention span longer than 5 seconds and be able to genuinely focus on something or someone without my mind making every little thing a distraction on its own.

I guess I was being mindfulness not knowing what the term really meant, but I didn't really notice my breath, I was just in this place that I call the void. I think of this place as the no mind place. Not thinking just in neutral from the engaged mode of thinking and body movement that is what I use to call human doing. This new state develops best in silence, I can hold the state for hours it's quite enjoyable, no thoughts drift through.

if you are concentrating on one thing - you are meditating. To learn to control your mind concentrate on one thing often. Then work on a job thinking only of the job, is mindfulness. Meditation then is training the brain to think of one thing - attention. Work without distraction is meditation.

In my experience, mindfulness meditation can also *cause* anxiety and PTSD. I never had a problem (or even a concept) of these things before I went to a Vipassana meditation retreat recently. I had to leave early because the anxiety escalated to the point where I thought I was going to die. It has continued as PTSD after returning home. So I'd say, be careful with meditation. The level of distraction we got today is also a good thing.

I'm definitely not a professional, but perhaps that's merely indicative of unresolved issues you have. Without the distractions they were actually able to, at the very least begin to, come to your conscious awareness.

@@williamedmiston5164 yes I was going to make that suggestion myself.. Trauma even forgotten pain does rear it’s ugly head when meditating.. it’s part of the process .. maybe carry on with the deep breathing and just focusing on one thing, that’s all it is.. you can do this by yourself, listening to some diff music or 528 hz whilst you’re doing this..

Training the mind out of the habitual patterns of reactive thinking is central for managing stress, anxiety, depression and ADD. Focusing on the breath is a good place to start, but the real power of mindfulness starts when you focus attention on the mind, when you learn to mediate on thoughts themselves, holding them in the mind without becoming lost in reactivity.

Meditation is important, but overindulgence can lead to an empty mind listlessly looking for answers in questions when the answer is right in front of them and easier to see than people realize. The mind IS capable of understanding contradictions. They're brainteasers yes, but there's a difference between thinking and sense. A combination of both in the right measure is the key to understanding even the contradictions. Understanding the difference between observation and intuition. Intuition works on probability, observation works in known facts. Intuition is the question, observation of the answer. If we're incapable of understanding contradictions, we wouldn't pass the Turing Test. Even those with an autistic mind can be capable of passing a Turing Test.

One way I tackle smartphone related distraction is by disabling all notifications. It helps in forgetting about smartphone and all the social media.

The mindfulness book "30 Days to Reduce Anxiety" by Harper Daniels is good. It has 30 exercises for meditation and mindfulness that are helpful and practical.

What he talks about in the beginning of the video of getting distracted, for most people is actually Internet addiction. I don't think it's sensible to try to negate the effects of this through meditation without dealing with the root problem. Most people don't see it as a problem because it's become so widespread. Also in relation to stress, so many people talk about ways to cope with stress as if it's an unchangeable fact of life. Should we be also looking at how to live less stressful lives in the first place?

No. Silence is best. But if you are distracted by noise, take note of what distracted you and go back to focussing on your breath. Do not judge distractions as bad, accept them and return to your breath.

Yes.. with lots of KZbin vids we’re able to look through the comment section and listen to video.. as the information is not that important.. yet we bombard ourselves with this shot daily.. which in turn is making us ill.. we’ll have to see, but many ppl find that they feel so much better after deleting their social media account, or cutting the usage down! 😊

With the rise of people self-identifying as 'spiritual but not religious', and the obvious benefits of mindfulness meditation, I have to wonder - Is theistic religion worldwide on the decline because of this phenomenon or is it on the rise in opposition to it? What would a predominantly Buddhist United States look like? I'd love to see a Big Thinker take on that question.

In his talk at iqsquared, Goleman said that mind wandering is crucial for creative insights. Like while bathing or getting into bus or while daydreaming, some creative ideas might pop up as mind wanders. And he also said that meditation stops mind from wandering. I didn't understand. Does it mean meditation prevents such creative insights or ideas from reaching our mind? Or meditation lowers creativity? Someone watch that video on iqsquared channel and look into this question please.

Mediation enhances your creativity because you become more in control of your thoughts outside of meditation, you can focus your attention on a creative element but also focus it on the task in hand

ADD isn’t just about not being able to concentrate. There are other symptoms needed to be diagnosed with it. Inattentiveness and others. Also ADD Disorder is outdated. It’s either ADHD ( ADD symptoms) or Combined ADHD (ADHD symptoms).
