In the 60’s my brother and his buddies had to stay in school or go to Vietnam. A guy in Glasgow came to dad and my 5 uncles, said if you help me buy this machine, I will stack your bales. It was 2 x 4 x 7 machine with a V4 Wisconsin motor. It could maybe do 35 on the highway. It worked great, the second year Garth had a retriever truck. The bale wagon field stacked the hay, then the truck hauled it to the stack yard. Third year Garth had 2 bale wagons. They worked from the Canadian border to the Missouri River, in three countries. Saved a lot of bad backs. Thank you whoever invented the Sperry Bale Wagon!

In my youth, we did this with a pitchfork, walking behind and flipping the bales up onto a two ton 50's vintage grain truck. A two man crew would stop periodically to stack the bales and switch duties (truck driver vs bale pitcher). 400 to 600 bales a day was common. We slept good at night.

This is the most efficient haying system I have ever seen. At first, I wondered why those balers were dropping the bales on the ground on edge until saw the wagon pick them up, so that answered that question. When I first started hauling hay in the late 60's & early 70's we used the "Armstrong Hay Loading System" I do believe I could have gotten along very easy with this setup.

Now that brought back memories! We had a 1069 with a gas engine,,,, if you really wanted to blow people’s minds you should have videoed when they made a “tie tier” spikes come up on the second table on the end two bales, kicks the middle bale down, then the first table only puts up tow bales until it fills three rows. If I had a nickel for every bale of hay I’ve picked up in one of these,,,, I could probably buy one of these new! Thanks for sharing!

When I was 16-17 years old in 1974-1975 I had a little summer side business after our crops were all taken care of until harvest. I picked up bales (both square and round) that farmers had let drop on the ground and I hauled them to their barns and stacked them in the hay mow. I charged 15 cents per bale, and I hired a crew of teenagers from my high school. At first I paid them by the hour, but some of them were not such good workers and so I switched to paying them by the bale, just like I was getting paid by the farmer. The bad workers really hated that. LOL. But the good workers didn't mind at all. On about our best days we might get 1000 bales picked up and put away, which really wasn't as much as we should have gotten done. I worked an area about 10-15 miles around our home farm. I rented Dad's JD 4020 Diesel and rented several of the neighbor's hay racks. Didn't make a lot of money at it (probably should have charged more than 15 cents), but it was an interesting experience, and got to meet a lot of nice farmers who really appreciated what I was doing for them.
@cheatinggravity1732 жыл бұрын
When I first started stacking by hand in about 1990 i was getting 19 cents which is what the guys with bale wagons were charging at the time. Seeing an opportunity to make some money and save some time/ labor, dad helped me buy a 1049 bale wagon in 91 or 92 (can't remember) and when I first started that's what I was charging too when I did custom work. Gas and parts had been creeping up, so after a few years I went up to an unheardof 25 cents.

My uncle bought one of these new in 1973, it was a 1049, the biggest at the time. I recall the monstrous price tag of $19,000 being the talk of the community. I ran it a lot that year and for a 17 year old it was quite an experience for me. It had a Ford V8 360 cu. in. gas engine and I think a 5 speed manual. Same size as the one in the video; 160 bale capacity. A little weird to get used because the operator sat so far out in front of the front axle. Otherwise it looked very much the same as the one in the video. No a/c of course. I often wondered if NH still made them. Interesting video.

Kudos to the makers of both baler and stacker and to the team who maintain them in good condition. In an operation of this scale, one would expect to see a few piles of hay/straw from broken bales, but everything looked squeaky-clean. In my time, lifting by hand was dirty, time-consuming and painful as very few farmers had a bale elevator.

When I was school leaver here in New Zealand I was doing wool grading in Patearoa and Wipiata district in the Maniatoto basiin. This region was a very scorching hot area. I was based at the cool Wipiata Hotel as it was so hot we worked only from 3.00 p.m onwards. I remember these machines were powered by large Ford V8'S and cab had no air-conditioning. They were cool to watch as they came and went working as we were sipping suds at the bar. This was in 1982 so I'm guessing the contactor already had them for a few years prior, he had 3 in his fleet. Now imagine a O.J Simpson style police chase with one of these wagons?. Thanks for your beautiful videos which frame in the vast farming country / Terrain what America offers. It's like just being there without me traveling. This looks very similar to Eastern Southland in the south island of New Zealand or Methven, Darfield districts in the Canterbury plains
@bigtractorpower2 жыл бұрын
Thank you for sharing. New Zealand is beautiful country. New Holland started building the automatic bale wagon in 1966. The earliest models had no cab. Sales really took off in the 1970’s. The 70’s and early 80’s models had the Ford gasoline V8 engines. Those models had cabs and it is standard operating to see them with the cab door open to reduce heat. The largest grain farm in my home town got the first self propelled ew Holland bale wagon in the area for straw and hay. It was so cool to see. That farm has three of these today. They once got a speeding ticket on Main Street with one of their New Holland’s. It is quick.
@conmanumber12 жыл бұрын
@@bigtractorpower Getting speeding tickets ain't cool when involving farm machinery as they are dangerous due to not being tested twice yearly like cars and trucks for road use. This just give the machinery users a bad name and attracts the cops then govt making laws a lot harder. Speaking of road use agricultural machines the J.C.B company (John Bamford Company) of England were the first in the world to make a high speed road going agricultural tractor. They were terrible machines early on but now they are a beautifully built versatile machine and very reliable. Speeds as quoted as follows... Generally the maximum speed of most models is 65 km/h (40 mph), but slower (40 km/h) and faster (80 km/h) versions are produced. en.m.wikipedia.org › wiki JCB Fastrac - Wikipedia. Claas company has a similar machine too. Europeans use high speed tractors as they have short seasons and farms with paddocks linked to public roads. Here in New Zealand despite being a very small nation of 5 million we have the worlds biggest choices of Agricultural Machinery, Trucks and Cars from every nation. Case, John Deere and Agco has all there American and European machinery here which the European stuff is made for absolute comfort, performance but the problem is they are loaded with electronics, computers and only going for 4 years if that as opposed to American which is simpler but less complicated and less comfort but more reliable.

A new pull type version was bought for my family’s dairy farm in the late 1970’s. If I remember correctly it was $20,000. Out IH 826 Hydro Demonstrator was a good fit for it. When you consider stacking bales was back breaking work in which you could injure your back permanently I think one of those is a good investment. Has anyone tried to modify one of those so you could roll the stacked load of bales onto a wagon instead of running that machine back to the barns several times a day?

Awesome video like always! Thanks!! Bring back lot of memories as I have worked on many bale wagons like the one in the video and the pull type bale wagons as well back in my New Holland days! There used to be lots of them around here back in the flax straw baling days and dairy farmers. We sold lots of them every years. When they get old oh my goodness they sure can be temperamental!! With the cab out front like that it takes some getting used to driving it.

John Doe big bales make this look like a massive waste of time. Soooo much more efficient.
@karlrovey4 жыл бұрын
It depends on how the bales will be used. Dairies and other places where indoor storage is used require the space efficiency of square bales. If you're selling to a place that needs hay (or straw in this case) on a regular basis, this is the way to go.

Nice video. I imagine the driver of the NH stacker has a bumpy ride stuck so far out in front of the front wheels. Thanks for the background info on the history of these stackers.
@bigtractorpower5 жыл бұрын
I am not sure. I will have to ask to drive one sometime. It can’t be too bad as they run at a good clip. If it was too bumpy they would slow down.
@jimrankin25832 жыл бұрын
It actually sort of floats. Of course if you really miscalculate your speed over a bump or washout, you get “launched”

I worked on a farm when I was 15. Funny the farmer never mentioned this machine existed. I must have stacked 10 wagons a day for 2 1/2 months. I figured out early in life that if it involves a bailer run away.

I tried this machine a few days ago. I couldn’t tell if I was making mistakes or a sensor was off? My stack would have improper patterns and I’d end up having to hand stack the pattern,more often than I expected. But I loved the challenge. Very fun
