I've been an automobile technician for 40 years and know a thing or two about tires. While I agree it's generally a good idea to go with a higher load rating than comes on most RVs for the reliability, there is a trade off. The flexibility of the sidewall on a tire is part of your suspension system. When you increase the load rating, and the number of plies in the tire, which is usually also accompanied by an increase in recommended air pressure, you are significantly increasing the ride harshness of your suspension. Those J rated tires aren't very compliant unless they're loaded down with more weight. If you've ever done this in a truck, run a much higher load rated tire, you know they will ride very harsh and you'll feel every crack in the road surface. Although no one is riding in your RV, the increased harshness from every bump and crack in the pavement will shock and stress the interior, cabinets, and frame of your RV. This may lead to cabinet failure or other things shaking apart after thousands of miles. The trade off between tire reliability and having a tire that is compliant enough to help absorb shocks is something owners should consider.

The thing you aren’t talking into account is that speed rating is calculated using the full load capacity of that tire. You are so far UNDER that weight that they will never build up the kind of heat that could damage the tire. You can easily take that tire to 67-70 mph at the weight you have on them. There is absolutely ZERO reason to replace them!!

I agree. Changing out now you (and your viewers) won't know how well they have worked. Contact the manufacturer to obtain their input and also to let them you will be evaluating the tires. Based on the comments over the next two or three years, you should be able to obtain a great set of data to provide users as well as the manufacturer. My other point, let the manufacturer know most RVers do like a set of heavier tires to support the load but also ones which will handle up to 75 mph. Myself, I usually drive around 70 mph, but I live in New Mexico where the distances are very far apart between towns and cities. Just like Texas, it takes a full day to get from one end of the state to the other but going across takes longer.

@acdii3 жыл бұрын
I can't see taking the risk to do the "limit" while towing a big box. I stay 70 and under, usually run right around 65. Speed kills, the faster you go, the higher the risk. Just ask the couple who dangled off a bridge when a wind gust hit their trailer while they were coming around a curve at 80 MPH which was the limit. Makes me wonder if they would even know how to react if something got in their way. I used to drive Commercial and did have a small Escort stop on the interstate and tried to back up because they missed their exit, I couldn't go left, lots of cars going faster than I was, couldn't go right due to construction, but was able to avoid killing the driver and missed the car by a few inches, took out a barricade, missed a bulldozer and finished up with my cab 90* to the road in the middle lane. I was doing 50MPH at the time. Any faster and it would have been game over for the escort driver. If you never have experienced that, then you wouldn't understand why I feel going 80 towing a heavy RV behind is a bad idea. Because of that I would be just fine with 62MPH tires.

Remember that tire speed rating is based on how long the tire can last at that particular speed and maximum load. If you were never close to maximum load than the tire speed capability is much higher than 62 mph. Heat buildup in the tire is a function of speed and load. Unfortunately, Goodyear will never publish how much faster you can go at a lower load there’s just too much liability. Also, quick little clarification, 245 is actually the section width at the “equator” of the tire, the tread width will typically be a bit narrower. 100% agree that your channel and others like your along with just social media is driving the pull for higher load rated tires. We are in a different time where customers now have a stronger voice back to the manufacturers and the good manufacturers actually are listening to the voice of customer. Keep it up! Ps, thanks for calling out that a 10 ply rated tire does not mean that a tire has 10 actual plies!

You would need to check but I would venture to guess that speed rating applies at maximum load. The rating is there to prevent failure due to heat buildup from the flexing of the sidewall if you only have the tire loaded to half of its capacity i would guess there may be some more wiggle room. Although the speed rating may be because of the weight of the tread and how it is attached. Where centripetal force is trying to pull the tread off. So more research would need done
@tyonarms67353 жыл бұрын

I wonder if there could be a clear box with say ping pong balls inside to "see" vibrations? I don't know how to compile the info to useable data, but maybe a local engineering program at a college would be willing to try some experiments collaboration? Also, twisting/torque of body/frames on bumpy or uneven surfaces especially on these super long trailers? Get base lines at slow, med, fast speeds on flat smoothe surfaces and go from there? Sorry, this is the crap my brain ruminate about just sitting out the C.... 😁

That's fine. I drive semi trucks for a living, and as long as you keep air in the tire, and it's inflated to what you're carrying, they'll last. Putting more air than what's required to carry the load only wears the tire out faster and makes the tire soak up all the road instead of relying on the suspension to help.

My advice would be to put that mat on the bottom step so you're not tracking mud or whatever all the way up the other three stairs, just my two cents on it. The whole speed and going to slow is dangerous thing is kind of just hyperbole. There's more than few studies on it because of logistics in this country and just how much freight is moved via roadways. I'm a retired OTR driver with a million miles safe under my belt. That means 1 million miles moving freight without a single ticket or accident to get that award. I never drove over 58 mph with the cruise set on Interstates or Highways and not once was I rear ended or anything like that. I did on more than one occasion end up having to drive past someone who'd passed me and farther down the road been in an accident. I'd also many times throughout the day when making my fuel stop or parking my rig for the night see people who'd passed me going much faster that had ended up going no farther than I had when all said and done. The difference we need to remember between driving 58 and 70 is only 12 mph. So when you think about it how much time are you really saving even on long drives when you consider driving slower gives you more time to react to things, saves some wear and tear and saves fuel. I'd keep those tires, set the cruise at 58mph and enjoy the drive knowing even on a 300 mile trip I only gave up a half hour or so and I'll be much more relaxed when I get there...

What about the weakening of the tire sidewalls when twisting actions occur on them when turning sharply? Surely this leads to weakening overtime, leading to destructive failures? Yes! I think you have definitely affected and effected change. I think user groups have, too. That, and personal beliefs, i believe led Alliance to begin their company with customer service as a priority. Now that i have seen your videos on Coachman Brookstone, i think they were in that same upgrade mindset. That seemed to spark others to upgrade, too, however i am not sure about true customer service with the others. Watching all of the videos i have, i see some lower priced models have lots of perks, more than some higher priced, however, there must be a cut someplace to get the price down. I was shocked to see how little the dealer makes on such a high ticket item, if my source was correct. I would feel guilty asking for too great a cut in price after reading that. But it did not mention volume. It all gets split up to cover many costs of running a dealership, too. I wonder what the honest percentage of the msp goes to which group and how it breaks down for each group involved. When you really consider how many people it takes to build a total RV, and also all those procuring components, then receiving, unpacking and handing off to the factory... Then there is probably insurance on each to transport them and the procuring of the driver and his costs. I bet i only thought of a few of the many steps, leaving out the piles of paperwork, including warranty and repair info... and redundancy of online workings...there is a cost for storing that info and the office equipment and staff. Gives me nausea thinking of it all. So, there are very good reasons why they are so costly that i never considered. It is like discovering as a city kid that milk comes from a cow on a farm, not just magically appears at the store! I think that would be a good point to make while maybe reworking your factory video. Maybe a series interviewing the people who make it happen behind the scenes (standing next to their own rigs and trucks, of course). Thanks for your great info and for being so trustworthy.

Overkill? Um, I'd say... "J" rating IMHO is a bit silly, but what the hey - it works!!. But as to 'speed', I'm with you - I do not go above 65 on the highway/freeway with my toy hauler..
@kevinbarry713 жыл бұрын
Why not put on light truck tires? You have to change the wheel of course. But they are very strong, have a higher speed rating, and can handle what you throw at them
@americanrambler49723 жыл бұрын
I think these are the wrong tires for your application. They do not have the speed rating you need. The load rating is to high. The sidewalls will be to stiff and cause a more harsh wide with less sidewall flex to accommodate chuck hole and poor road conditions. They will transmit much more of the road shocks and judder into the suspension and into the trailer itself. I suspect they also add a notable amount of extra sprung weight to the suspension. That is my opinion.

Keep the J Rated tires. How fast do you really need to go hauling a big 5th wheel?
@callen71003 жыл бұрын
The speed rating is something too many people ignore. They go down the road 75 MPH and complain when the tire blows out. Nobody needs to be in that big of a hurry.

You are not full timer, basically camping locally. No need to change your tires. You don't travel far enough to review tires anyway.

Is there a publicly available database out there with tire performance and failure data? I hear lots of stories, but see no data. I'm pretty sure NHTSA has such data (because there's a law that requires reporting) but I can't find it anywhere.

Completely off topic. My inlaws have modified the inside of their trailer. Wondered if you could do a video talking about that. Gotta be some safety/weight concerns/structural issues when people do that.

I run the S635 Sailun tires along with a self balancing ring to keep them good and balanced. They run cooler and and keeps the vibrations down. A tire out of balance can destroy a new trailer.

All tires sold in the USA, regardless of country of origin, are required to meet or exceed the standards set by the DOT. So what's your point again?

Maybe not worth commenting because everyone always pays attention to the ratings right? Especially when trying to get to the campsite at check in to make the most of that 1st day. I notice my goodyear endurance tires have a variable weight rating that looks to revolve around the speed rating. The specifications chart shows a range of weights matched to pressures. Keeping in mind the trailer manufacture guidelines, we all know that too little pressure can overheat a tire because of the additional flex, maybe some additional factors. Other than assuming that the manufacturer designs for centrifugal forces one could assume looking at the ratings chart that with just a few extra pounds of air you might be safer at higher speeds. I'm pretty sure that you picked a PSI for your tires based on an "assumed" weight of your trailer and it's manufacture guidelines, I think most people fit this category. Seems to me there's some room to maneuver around the spec chart based on what you want to accomplish. Publishing every conceivable variation would be excessive at best. I love my tires, even at the ratings with 87 mph top speed and lots of load range capability. I know it's best practice to stay within published specs because that's what's been tested, just saying.

Thank you. Timely video for me. Looking to upgrade the China bombs that came with my Geo pro travel trailer. Curious what your recommendation would be for a lightweight 19 foot camper trailer with a single axle. I live in Texas too and so am frequently on hot highways. My biggest criteria for purchase is durability because with the single axle a blowout could cause a lot of damage so I want to avoid that at all cost. Generally I purchase at discount tire but I’m open to looking elsewhere. We love your channel and you really know your trailer so I would value your comments. Thanks so much and God bless.

I "had" a single axle trailer and changed it to Endurance. I'm our wreck the tires made it through. The tire and rim just ripped off the hub leaving the nuts attached. Guys tires, ruined axle.

Any thoughts on Towstar tires from Les Schwab?
@thetravlinman81113 жыл бұрын
Rating of a tire (example G) is simply a load rating, NOT a quality rating. I’ll take a Goodyear Endurance E rated tire over any China made G rated tire (for a trailer weight not exceeding a E load rating). Westlake tires are crap, as are most China made trailer tires. There is a lot more variables in a quality tire besides the load rating!
