We marathi people dont use tomato n onion n chilli but use jaggery n amsul(kokam) in dal. It tastes best....also we add ghee before serving.

I have read that Gujarati ppl add jaggery or sugar in most of their food, it might be tiny amount but they do add it. In Bihar, Jharkhand or Eastern UP (the food and ppl are same) , the food has onion, garlic too is often used and mustard oil is the staple cooking ingredient. Ppl prefer savoury taste in daily food although theh eat lot of sweets. She added a lot of achar which is usually not added but I understand some ppl like adding achar or some khatai to some food. In my home usually stuffed pithi is made in which pithi is filled with chana daal (that is pretty popular in bhojpur side of Bihar, more than this dal pithi we make stuffed one and that too tastes really good). I prefer stuffed ones.

Maharashtra me Varanfal bolte hai.. Same but no onion. Kahi jagaha onion, lasan dalte bhi hai. Kokam ya imli & adrak, jaggery hoti hai. Ye bhi karke dekhenge.

That's yummy. We make it too, and we call it Dal Dhokri. We dont add Pickle, but we will definitely try putting Pickle next time i make it.
