Had the same problem after replacing a chain that broke. It was noisy for a long time and my solution was to wear headphones. Then the chain broke. I replaced it and it and started having the skipping problem on the three cogs I spend the most time on. On closer inspection I noticed the teeth on some of the cogs were worn to a sharp point and didn't have a flat top anymore. New cassette fixed the skipping and the noise. I still like riding with headphones though.

My fix was simple. I had washed my bike according to the Park Tool KZbin video "How to Wash a Bike" and apparently didn't center the rear wheel properly in the seat stays when I reinstalled it. There was no noticeable issue during light load on the cranks but when I began to climb a steep hill I experienced the skipping, slipping and jumping gears shown in this video. I inspected the rear derailleur, chain, cogs, and chain rings and could not identify any noticeable issues, but I saw that the real wheel was not perfectly centered in the seat stays. I centered the rear wheel, climbed the same hill and experienced no skipping, slipping or jumping gears. I could not imagine attempting the identify issues with the bike components given that the fix was simply centering the rear wheel.

Always replace chain together with rear cassette. When the chain wears it damages the teeth on the cassette, and when the cassette has wear, it stretches the chain. When you replace both and the chain is still skipping, it is actually not the chain skipping but the hub (where the cassette is put on) that has a lot of dirt inside, causing it not to "bite" in the wheel. Search YT for a detailed video on how to do maintenance on your hub. No need to buy a whole new bicycle :) Oh yeah, and by the way... Avoid taking off on the smallest rear chainring. It puts all your power on 6 teeth (11 in total where only 6 have contact with the chain). Shifting to 2nd or 3rd gear before stopping is a very good habit which will make you spend less money on chains and cassettes.

Just bought a new Shimano XT chain and this happend to me yesturday when putting the power down on the pedals, ( happens only on the smallest cogs which are used 75% of the time) So after changing the ( well used ) XT cassette and re-adjustment the problem was solved! Generally a new chain will not perform well with a used up cassette and vise-versa, a warn chain and cassette will probably work better because both components have molded to each other's wear throughout it's life, it's pretty damn important to match your chain to the gear number you're running.

This is what I was dealing with yesterday. I had this problem after I changed the 3 years old chain. It is worn out, my bad I didn't take care of it sooner. The thing is everything works flawlessly with it (it's really smooth and silent ride), it's the new one that has a problem. No wonder, as you said, components have molded to each other's wear. Now the dilemma: do I start replacing my XT components or let it be ? If only I can test run new components. It almost feels not worth it. New cassette is around 70EUR, but cranks are about twice as much.

@@matoatlantis Yes, you're going to have to replace the cassette as well, but it's a good excuse to buy new parts for your ride! If you want your chain and gear components to last longer then intended, you'll need to clean and Lube every other ride to get the most out of your new gear.

Definitely the cassette. I have the same problem now on a low end trek mountain bike. When you watch your video closely, when it slips there doesn't appear to be any violent slippage motion of the chain. Tips: old freewheel ( or cassette) used up, with new chain = bad idea. Old rings with new chain = bad idea. New derailleur with old beat up Freewheel or cassette = bad idea. Biggest tip of all for chain noise is to check out the direction of the teeth on the freewheel or cassette as many cheap ones have the teeth facing the outside of the wheel causing chainrub. This happens quite a lot on cheaper hardware, solution is simple on a hard surface with a small flat hammer slowly pound the teeth into their proper shape as the other good cogs.

@@jowen85 Chains stretch over time as the rollers wear down and develop play. Then the link spacing no longer matches the gear tooth spacing and the chain starts wearing down your cassette and chainrings. I didn't know about this until a bike mechanic pointed out to me the difference in wear between the gears of my cassette that I was using a lot compared to those I was not, after just 3 years of daily use. I would take the cassette off - using a chain whip and a lock ring key and this exposes the hub enough to check the hub. If you ride in the UK conditions it might just be gunked up - if it's really gunked up the wear rate of the pawls will be accelerated so check they how look. I've got a set sat here for the exact same issue. Fairly cheap to replace but depending on the design and style of the teeth some take more wear than others. I use a halo superdrive hub the teeth are tiny on the pawls and they don't last so long in UK weather. I go through a set per year around 2000 miles of all weather off road riding. If you add a maintenance schedule to keep on top of hub cleans with a drop of light oil not grease then they last longer

Bad advice. Same-sounding problem with a brand new cassette, chain and chain rings AND a brand new wheel. The freehub started slipping after 100 miles. Easy way to rule out particular elements is to take the wheel off the bike and, using a chain whip, apply pressure while engaging the cassette (even a single cog wheel will do) to simulate pedalling. You may need to rotate the free hub (as in disengaged) back, then apply pressure, back again, and apply pressure at different points. It will slip if it is the freehub.

neverbikealone just doesn’t seem possible, idk. The skip clearly happens in the rear, totally beyond me 😵 I’ve worked at bike shops and repaired hundreds and hundreds of bikes and anytime I’ve seen skipping like this it was the freehub needing some kind of attention.

Was dealing with the same issue, everything is fine while peddling chain is fine as well as the rear free hub so long as tension remains. As soon as I stop peddling, the free hub in the rear something is catching and causing the chain to bounce and come off constantly. It was do to the rear hub being damaged.

Follow up...removing 1 link did not help. A new cassette solved my skipping. A shop mechanic told me that skipping is common on a worn cassette + new chain combo.

Ohh so this is the issue im having with my trek 820 single track from 2013. Its not as bad. It only slips once and then it catches. But its getting worse to the point where i have to be in a lower gear then normal when accelerating from a stopped position. Ive tried adjusting everything and the only solution is less torque during acceleration. Since the bike is over 5 years old think i could still find the correct parts for it at a decent price? Or should i just pick up a different ride and hang this one in the garage? Love this bike and ride it 12+ miles almost daily. Its had a lot of use over 5 years but has always been maintained. These are the first mechanical issues ive had out of this bike and i dont really have the money to spend $400+ on a new one.

I’m starting to think all bikes with derailleurs do this in the higher gears, no matter how new or aligned/tuned they are. I recently got a Rock Mountain Growler and as with all derailleur bikes, I am constantly re-aligning the derailleur hanger, adjusting the derailleur. The bike shifts perfectly because of this, but I still get some chain slip when pushing hard in high gears. On the other hand, I also have a old beat up single speed mountain bike that I ride a lot and it always works great no matter how hard I peddle or how bad I crash it. Long story short, turn you bike into a single speed and never have this issue again lol! That’s my plan anyway 🤙

This happened to me after I changed my chain. So I changed my cassette, it case it had worn with the chain. Same problem. Just got back from my LBS. I was on the right track - my front chain rings had also worn with my chain, so I needed to replace those as well. To show me the problem the LBS turned the crank on the stand under load and you could see the chain slipping just a bit from the front chain ring. So the solution theBidon posted was spot on for me.

@theBidon5 жыл бұрын
If the chain is the right one for the new cassette and the length is the same as before, the old crankset could be the issue. For me the chain would not jump if I placed the chain in the larger crankset ring. This was because I rarely used it and the teeth were in good shape. Once I dropped the chain down to the middle cog, the chain would jump with right away.

Hasn’t anyone identified why it’s doing this? Mine is the same. Tho have a new chain. Has only just stared doing it. Old cassette, but find it hard to believe it’s doing it regularly all of a sudden, because the cassette is worn? Perhaps an internal hub issue? Sounds like the cassette is moving on the hub, or the cassette mechanism on hub? Really frustrating. Any help is much appreciated.
@theBidon5 жыл бұрын
Typically you need to replace your cassette and crankset when replacing your old chain. The chain if used and not cleaned and lube properly over its life has worn into the cassette and crankset. I didn’t believe it could be the cassette and crankset until after I replaced them. I had the same thought it was something with the hub.
@theelz14823 ай бұрын
it only happened to me after replacing the chain (its sized correctly (I tried 2 as I thought the chain was too tight & took a couple of links out too many and it still slipped) had a recent chain, cassette & derailiur change also) only happens when under pressure, less on the front large cog.

Yep, you basically have to test each part of the drivetrain. Start with the chain, then cassette, derailleurs (if aligned properly), and crankset (or chain rings). Pretty frustrating, I know. In my case I replaced the chain, the skipping began, then replaced the cassette, skipping continued. Here I should have just checked my derailleur instead of purchasing a new one... bc the issue was with my old crankset.

@@snap_drama346 no, its more for fine tunings for each gear in the rear. So when you shft you turn the barrel and repeat that until all the gears are smooth. Hi, I've got a E-MTB with Shimano Steps cranks and SRAM cassette. The bike just eats through cassettes and stretches chains due to the added torque of the motor. In 3000km I've gone through 3 cassettes (mainly the smaller cogs) , one free-hub (cassette ate the free-hub so I changed to SRAM XD-driver). Bike started skipping so I replaced the cassette with a relatively new chain. Continued to skip so I changed the shifting cable inner and outer, still skipped. Bought a new Derailleur (upgraded from NX to GX) and still skipped. Changed out the derailleur hanger, still skipped. Measured the chain and figured it needed changing and then the skipping really got bad, bike is almost unusable in the lower gears because of more load. It's basically dangerous. It really feels like the free-hub is skipping, but after reading this it makes sense to buy a new chain-ring. It must be worn since the rest gets eaten up quickly. I will try this. Thanks for making the Video
