That was me riding up the hill at 19:59. My bike had the added weight of front and rear suspension, but very low gearing. I had to stand on the pedals and lean forward to keep the front wheel on the ground.

I went up that street once in my car back in the early 80's. When I got to the top of the hill. My car was facing up to the sky. I couldn't see what was below me. I just rolled slowly and came down the hill in 2nd gear very slow. Thank you for putting this episode on youtube!

Cameron (the camera man) made it up the hill twice as fast as Huell, and Cameron was carrying a TV camera and recording the bike rider while he was walking.

I went to watch this event one year. (We joined a group at the Santa Anita race track to ride over.) I watched Rick Denman ride the bike he used during filming of a movie (possibly Breaking Away). It had the huge camera mounted on the front, which probably helped with keeping the front wheel down, and Rick rode it without using his hands on the bike's handlebars. Another fellow tried to ride up with a baby trailer attached - and his baby inside. He came to a stop, and the trailer came unhitched. The catchers were able to stop the trailer from hurtling downhill. About the time we were leaving, they let him try again!

I have conquered Bunker Hill downtown, but this ascent looks near insurmountable. BTW why would anyone choose a heavier mountain bike with suspension?

Because mountain bikes have easier gears than road bikes, by far.
