As a teenager there were three players in ‘86 when I researched my first mt bike purchase - Ross, Specialized and Cannondale. I withdrew $800 cash in 20 dollar bills from my account, wrapped in a bank ribbon and bought the red Ross Mt Whitney, their top of the line mt bike. I never had to restore it because I’ve put at least 1,000 miles on it every year since purchase. I’ve made changes and updates to it throughout the years in the name of maintenance and performance but it still looks new out of the box. It’s become a lifelong companion that will last forever. I made a great life decision that day in ‘86. No bike today at any price can match it.

I have a rare old Alberta, Canada made Tech mountain bike from the early 90's that begs to differ. someone tremcladed a spiderman theme in 1996 and it was awful. i put paint stripper on and it took all of it off and i men all of it. So i'm thinking metallic gold. Cheers.

I still have a 1990 Rockhopper. All original including saddle, bell, all except the tires and tube. The shifter are hard to shift but the deraileurs respond find. I'd like to take some of it apart, e.g. the shifters and clean it. Maybe turn into a easy touring bike with fenders and baskets. Your video is very helpful.

I have found using a Y wrench for your hex needs makes life easier, better grip and leverage when stripping a bike down and then on the reassembly. Nice score on the Stumpy, love the thumbie shifters!. I am looking for a Rock Hopper currently which aren't quite as pricey. Also I agree, clean it up take of rust and give it new lube but leave the patina, its earned it!

Nice work on leaving bike as original as possible. I agree, some bikes aren’t meant to get full restorations. Nothing wrong with a little patina.

I'm 100% on board with the patina look - I keep my early 90s Specialized in a very similar look, complete with rusty chips and dents in the frame. There's a lot of history in those battle scars. Also, there's no better bike for a Hite-Rite! I received no payment for this message.

Good for you. Might I ask, do you know about sizing for height for those older Stumpjumpers? Is it similar to a current Specialized or is it different? Thanks in advance.

I just picked up a '91 Stumpjumper Comp. I was happy to see you bought the same Kool-Stop salmon I got, lol. Thanks for the great vid! On mine, I'm surprised they painted the rims black. The brakes take the paint off. Seems silly to use a black finish that comes off.

What you definitely should do is take a green scratch pad and remove the rust from the frame. Once done you can use nail polish (clear or in the frame color) to prevent the steel from further rusting. Nail polish is soft enough for the screw bolts btw. And I always use car wax/polish to refreshen the old dull paint of the frame. Looks like brand new afterwards and costs nothing.

@Alan Brando I've been handling steel frames for 2 decades now. Various Columbus, TrueTemper, Reynolds etc. in various metallurgy composition. They all have rust issues. Especially all screws are prone for rust and bottom bracket area.

I like it looking a original. I think it depends. I have almost original 1988 stump jumper other than the front fork and front wheel. More scratches than yours. i have no desire to change it. Triple butted frame. If I remember right the small front sprocket is oval. I really like that white frame. Very nice looking bike. Thanks for sharing.

Great video with all the history attached. According to Specialized's Sinyard in the mtb documentary, Klunkerz, he pretty much admits that he took Tom Ritchey's mountain bike design and handed it to his partners in Japan to manufacture...thus coming out with the Stumpjumper.

@@lancehatch4475 Great article, thanks for passing it along. I'd heard Neenan modeled the first Stumpjumper. But it was plainly obvious in "Klunckers" Ritchey was upset about Specialized "copying" his bike's design and geometry. But now I guess it's all water under the bridge as all those guys got wealthy because of mtbing.
@lancehatch4475
@lancehatch4475 2 жыл бұрын
@@ianbauer4703 it's possible that they did copy the Ritchey bike and then Neenen said that he designed it from one of his previous bikes as cover. Or Tom Ritchey got it wrong and Neenen was telling the truth. We might never know the full story but as you said, it's all water under the bridge.

I'm not in the "preserve the patina" camp. Rust isn't your friend. Maybe use a rust converter to halt its action and then wax over it to retain the old paint and "scars."

My first mountain bike was a 1992 Stump Comp, the year after this one. Bought it in May or June of '93 as a leftover, for the same price as the base Stumpjumper. Unlike you, and keeping it vintage, I'm planning on first putting an 11 speed group on it, and then maybe drop bars, and make it sort of a 26" gravel bike. It's been vintage, and I just haven't been riding it, as I ride my more modern bikes instead. So this might get me out on it more.
