As a 2000 RC46 owner who rides the bike as much as I can, am perfectly happy with the performance and handling of 90% of a RC45 for a very small fraction of the cost.

Fast idle lever.. Glorious machine. I had the RC46 (VFR800Fi) with an evolution of the 750. V4 gear driven cams. On paper and against other newer sports bikes, was very tame, however on the road the engine was lovely. With relatively low power, it meant it could be revved out in lower gears. Pick up was great and power delivery strong from around 3.5k rpm, but felt like it revved forever.

I rode the 800 around the track… and you’re right. The engine was just ultra smooth. Not really designed as a race bike but I had plenty of fun anyway.

I love these reviews ive turned 30 this year and even I find bikes of the last 7 years a bit samey and styling wise a bit boring. The manufacturers seem to agree with the katana and retro colour schemes coming back

I used to own the rvf400 and that didn't handle the best stock, I had to lower the front by about 10mm and also put a 2mm washer at the top of the rear shock to raise the rear, after that it handled amazingly, turned on a dime, and the front end was super confidence inspiring, but it also had a 17 inch front wheel with a 120/60 tyre.

Years ago I had the opportunity to speak with Colin Edwards Sr (RIP sir)and during our conversation he blasted the RC45 as being “nearly impossible to setup”, and the reason his son, and so many others never won a title on it. What he said made sense as it took a seasoned GP champion to finally win a WSBK championship on it. Great machine, but I don’t doubt what CE SR told me.

This series is gold, I guess it should be said, “for a person of my age”. 😂 I remember watching mechanics warm up Aaron Slight’s Castrol RC 45 at Laguna Seca. That bike certainly had one of the most “expensive” engine sounds I’ve ever heard, and no doubt made more than 120 hp. I realize it’s impossible but what a thing it would be, to compare the showroom version to the factory racing version, for this bike and also the RC 51. The showroom bike was always a little heavy and underpowered, even compared to the best production superbikes of the day. I’d love to experience the race bike and see what was truly done with the package.

Thanks for this Chris back in the day we didn't have videos of these on the road we just had to pour over the pictures in bike mags. I love this bike and I always have done. Never used to like the RC30 but do now so looking forward to that one. Keep it up mate. This one stays on my dream bike garage list as does the 998r the SP1 and the RC30, desmo and gsxr r.

Thanks for your comments. I had a talk with a guy who owned an rc45 and and an rc51 (sp1). I was admiring his bike (45) and as I was riding my rc51 I asked him which bike he preferred. He unhesitatingly replied that as much as he liked the 45 his first preference was definitely the 51. Of course that pleased me no end. The value of the 45 is definitely in the rarity despite it being top Honda quality and a brilliant machine.

An interesting review & a very cool series. I remember these back in the day & had no idea they were so rare. I think I was more fixated on the 400cc version. Not sure if this is possible but a Yamaha OWO1 & an NR750 would be very cool if possible.

This was a timely video as I've been warming up to the '45 of late and finding my lust is on the rise for one. In addition to the tweaks you mentioned, mine would have the engine fettled by someone knowledgeable to unleash some of the hidden horses that Honda locked away in the standard version, a fruity zorst to really hear the v4 sing, and a paint job reminiscent of Joey's '99 bike that he beat Jeffries with at the Ulster GP

I drilled holes in my 86 RC24 VFR 750air filter housing, and the intake sound matched the 4 into one exhaust. It definitely turned heads.

Massive Honda v4 fan here having owned 4 vfr800 5 generations and a 1997 vfr750. Would be good to get Chris to ride a mint 5th gen vfr800 since it's the poor cousin to the rc45

The bore and stroke of the RC30 is 70 x 48.6 where as the RC45 is 72 x 46.8! ( If memory serves me correctly ) I own a ‘ kitted ‘ RC30 and have ridden more than one RC45. Very different bikes to ride but for everyday riding, the RC45 is the more evolved bike. You’ll adore the RC30 BUT it MUST be set up properly.

Having riden these (and the RC30) it sounds like setup and or tyres is off, they should be very stable, stay on line and with a bit of muscle able to adjust the line to where you want to go. They just ooze qualify in build, handling and engine. Where they do lack is in brakes where 20+ years of advancements is obvious and out right power. Otherwise a thing of beauty

It's a shame you couldn't have written my one because I disagree with you regarding the chassis it's absolutely phenomenal handling bike I even outdo bikes that are newer today. ( obviously that's down to the ride as well) I've done all those to my bike I've also upgraded the brake pads exhaust braided lines and airbox completely different bike having those few bits done. Still a great video... mine is in the garage on trickle charge going up in value every year...🤣🤣👍😎

Sounds like the suspension needed adjusting to fix your cornering on the road.

Get the suspension sorted in the same class as e.g. a 998R and it will be a handling like a 998R

In my top 5 is the RC30, but the 45 leaves me cold. Same with my NC30 vs NC35...... The 45 looks heavier and got very average road reviews in the day.

Steve Hislop wasn't too impressed when he tested it for PB in '94. Honda dropped him shortly after! Steve A'lee down in Plymouth reckoned you couldn't just change one thing to improve it, it needed the full HRC kit to work.

They have this very '90's riding position - GSXR's of the same era have it too It's all sort of squished up that makes your jacket ride up a lot but still a stretch to the bars Bit odd I'm not a fan - lovely iconic bike and all that but personally, the YZF750R is a better sports road bike (better looking too I think but that's maybe just me)
