I went with a snowboard helmet and ski goggles for Wyoming winter streets. Grippy flat pedals, actually Race Face. Dedicated winter bike is an "84 Trek Single Track MTB, 2" Kendra Klondike studded tires. Good fenders. New cables. The old bike needed to be overhauled with repack bearings after stiffening up at 0 deg. Now it is a dream. Big fat Columbia winter boots, same as my snowshoe boots. Nice shoes at office.

My disc brakes are squealing like a mad banshee as well. Don't need a bell to warn pedestrians of your approach; just give'em a quick honk on the brake!

+Digby O'Dell When they get condensation on the rotors expecially in cold conditions they squeal pretty loud until they heat up. I always get funny looks from people on the first downhill on my way home but once I get the rotor warmed up all is back to normal haha.

Do you run lower tire pressure in the wintertime? Also...those bright colored jackets are a good idea for visibility because cars don't always see people dressed in black.

Riding ruts are my favorite, with wider tires though, 2 inches wide and an extra row of studs keep the grip on the sides of the ruts. The Fat bikes are interesting, they have a lot more traction in soft conditions but on hard ice, not so good; I think because they distribute bike and rider weight so much more, they don't get a great grip and once they start to slide sideways, it can be very difficult to correct.

Have you ever tried a swimmer's cap for winter riding under your helmet? i tried it for a week and love it! I'm bald and my head gets cold quick, especially when temps are less than 20 degrees. Give it a go sometime. It traps your body heat in.

Bike Bloggers video are some what inspirational. Makes me want to commute to work by bike again. I have a 8.5 mile commute. 5 miles on one lane roads the rest on dedicated path almost entirely rural. The problem is I currently get about 5 1/2 hours of sleep a night. My 19 month old is on his mother's afternoon shift schedule. The thought of thirty minutes less sleep don't sound so great.

+Magic Matrix Same as usual Magic Matrix. I rinse with water, and clean dirty parts with degreaser like a dish soap and clean the brakes with isopropyl alcohol, then dry.

Now that the winter is upon us again I'm looking into winter tires for my crosser and marathon winters are one option on my list. How have yours held up? I read old forum post about them and quite many have had problems with studs pushing thru the rubber puncturing the inner tire.

I should have cut the struts but likely didn't hurt myself on them. I had bumped them in the past when turning my wheel.

+Jimmy Minh Bang Pham Totally normal, the rotors will sqeal when they are cold and wet. If you have a long enough downhill and you ride the brakes that sound will go away once the rotors heat up. Of course if you ride a ways without touching your brakes they will start squealing again but it's not a problem.

Be careful for black ice. That can send you on your tuchus (Yiddish for "butt") mighty fast. I call something like that while I'm horseback riding a "creative dismount." And "mazel tov" on saying "balaclava" correctly. :-) I don't mind being on the snow, even the crunchy ice, but with cars around I get nervous, especially downhill. At that point, I just get off and walk. As for deep snow, I once had the fun experience of "skiing" down a grassy unmarred hill on my bike (without peddling) for fun till I got to the bottom and was pretty much stuck there, so I had to walk it out. These days, I'm 49 and have no desire to hit the ground. I don't bounce as well as I used to and I have no desire to get hit a 3rd time or more.

That first link's crash could have ended a lot worse for you. Thankfully, it didn't. I don't bike on roads for this reason alone. I've been hit twice, once seriously. I don't need to end up in a hospital because of a car. You have nerves of steel. Those are some snowy and icy roads and my main concern would be slipping and crashing into something or something crashing into me. I slid like you did in your second link on a sidewalk once in college. I tried to brake at the top of the hill and my rear wheel came out from under me and I slid about 5 feet on my butt. Fortunately, I only hurt my pride a bit and tried to have a sense of humor about it. It could have been worse. I'll have to try using studded tires and see how that works. For now, I avoid asphalt and clean concrete when I know that there could be black ice on them. I go REALLY SLOWLY.

I liked that saddle. I felt very stable on it in a more upright position and it was comfortable. Presently I ride a more aggressive saddle though.

I've heard in your other videos that you use a single gear bike. I live within a mile from work and thinking such a bike would be ideal as I would leave it outside during the rain and snow etc. What kind of single gear bike is yours? Any recommendations you could share with me?

I have two bikes right now - a steel single speed bike (Wabi Lightning) with road geometry and an aluminum single speed bike that actually I converted to single speed (Diamondback Haanjo Comp) with relaxed geometry, disc brakes and fenders.

I ride at down to 10-degrees F, high wind, in off-the-shelf gear. Nothing fancy or expensive. Hands: -layer the gloves. Lined leather driving gloves inside lined leather mittens works great. Handgrips -wrap those puppies in good rubber tape. Nice and thick. Helps your grip, cuts thermal transfer. Feet: -oversized boots. Liner socks and thermal socks of your choice. ON really cold or mushy days, tape a plastic bag over your boot and up your leg. KEY: make a footie from "foil insulation". This is HUGE in keeping your feet warm. Core: Layers, to your taste. Below 30, I use a front shield under my jacket ; the shield is the same foil insulation I use for my feet. Helmet: Any hat is fine.Make a liner from the foil insulation.
