Vintage Koga-Miyata Road Bike Restoration
Subscribe: / bikeituk
This video shows the full restoration and ride of a 1984 Koga-Miyata Road Winner Bike.
Koga teamed up with Miyata from Japan in the 1970’s to produce top end road bicycles for the market. Miyata produced the frames and Shimano provided the components. The Bicycles were assembled by hand in the Netherlands, and really are beautiful bikes to ride.
Watch the bicycle completely stripped down, cleaned, restored and assembled before the bike is back out on the open road where it belongs. This bike restoration really was a pleasure to do and the results were very rewarding. I hope these videos inspire you to recycle that old bicycle, and give it some new life.
Thanks for watching and all the support.

Wow that's a real treat. True Story... Back in the early 80s I became a CAT-1 and got my self Team Capri Sonne, Koga Miyata, it was a blue & gold team issue with all DuraAce. To me there was no better racing bike, it was all business. I eventually got to work with and personally know the Shimano family & Mr. Miyata as I worked at a bike shop near the Japan Group head office in Glendale Calif. Being a pro racer & mechanic they were always in the shop picking my brain for technical advise and in return gave me prototype racing components to test. One day they gave me a set of ARAYA Titanium rims, they were stunningly beautiful & very expensive. But after a month of training & racing they would mysteriously crack at the eyelets. So they kept giving them to me to see if I could figure out the problem. One day my friend who worked at Skunk Works stopped by the shop to fix his bike. He was in charge of the Titanium skin on the SR-71 Black Bird so I showed & asked him what can be causing these mysterious cracks on my Ti rims? It took him about 5 seconds to figure it out!!! He said "you can not have galvanized steel spoke eyelets pressed against Titanium as it causing a chemical reaction that makes Titanium crack". I was shocked to say the least. The very next day the whole Shimano & Araya entourage show up at my shop and they too were shocked by making such a mistake. And right on the spot they offered me to work for them. A month later I was traveling back & forth to Japan and did so for many years. So yes, that racing Koga Miyata was a major part of my life. Anyways nice job. Sincerely Dan

Hello Andy, You've done it again, you've got my heart racing! This was indeed a stunning job. Even though blue's not my colour (except musically speaking) this beauty won me over. I have two questions if you don't mind. 1st, I have 1980 Bianchi with Shimano 600. The pedals were never removed. I want to remove them to repack the inner bearings. I got a pedal wrench, so whats the easiest way to remove them? Speaking about youtube views, I would assume that views pick up as the days get longer and it gets warmer? You deserve more views. Cheers Ivan
@BikeItUK
@BikeItUK 3 жыл бұрын
Hello Ivan thanks for your support and watching. Regarding the pedals then yes a pedal sounds like a good start. It all depends on the design on the pedal though. Regards to KZbin views, it works on regular uploads. Once a week say, It is almost impossible to do. A full restoration a full time job and time with the family. I decided to keep the quality and continue to enjoy what I do rather than dilute the content. Thanks again for your support all the best Andy

Hello. Thanks for show me this amazing bike. I have one Koga Miyata in Gentlemen version. It is more trekking version but I have noticed that the frame is near similar to your road version. My version has the same fork with nice chrome on the end of fork. The frame has cantilever pivots and some other brackets wich are useful in the trekking but more or less is the same. Actually now I rebuild my bike to road bike so therefore I have question to you. Do you know if is possible to pair rear derailleur wich was orginally intended to work with friction shifter (SACHS-HURET ECO S) with indexing shifter from Shimano? Best Regards Michał from Poland.

I restore older steel bikes as well. But with a new twist. 28 mm tires on new carbon wheels with 11 speeds. If you think for 1 second that I would ever ride what appeared to be 21 mm tires ever again you're sadly mistaken. Neither would I have ride a 22 lbs group. While a Concour saddle was good for its day the latest 1 lb carbon saddle is lighter and more comfortable. I've been riding for 50 years and my return to steel bikes like my Basso Loto or Aliverti or Moser shows that unless you're racing, steel makes a far better choice.

I once had a pearly white Koga Myata Roadwinner bike that unfortunately was stolen when I left it unattended outside for a few minutes. I also knew the son of mr. Gaastra , the founder of Koga Myata bicycles, as we went to the same school for close to two 2 years. That was in Heerenveen, Friesland province, in the Netherlands. The Koga Myata factory was also located in Heerenveen. Batavus bikes were also produced there. Currently 'Accel' a major producer of regular bikes- and E-Bikes is situated in Heerenveen.

Andy, Brilliant idea to bleach and dye a suede saddle. I love it. But routing of the brake cables generally passes over and behind the bar clamp, yet you chose to go beneath. Your reason for this?
@BikeItUK
@BikeItUK 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks buddy, on the video of the build you'll see the bike off the stand I must of routed them about 5 different ways, they just wasn't sitting right. The other thing that I think effects how the cables, is the order the levers are. In Europe the levers are opposite to the UK. Food for thought, thanks again Andy

@@BikeItUK I bought a Superior MTB from a guy in Melton Mowbray, he is Greek. The brakes on the bike are back to front, it was bought in Athens and was the first Superior bike imported into Greece, he was telling me. I have had to bleed and do a pad renewal on them but will leave them European / USA style, I like the rear brake and shifter on the right hand side, it runs 1 x 12 XTR groupset 😘

Andy, I loved that restoration, in particular the fact that you kept it very original! Unfortunately for me, it's difficult to find such a Koga Miyata bike here in the USA. I went to your website for the first time and enjoyed reading your biography! I could not see any restored bikes for sale. What happen to the bikes you do not wish to keep? I hope you'll do another Koga Miyata restoration someday. Cheers from Texas!

Another great restoration Andy! Apart from your technical skills you have also a great sense of the estethics of given period. Your videos where very helpful for my restoration project. My bike is the closest to this Miyata, because it is from another dutch brand - Batavus. I've bought the model "Criterium" (which was just below the "Professional" model) from 1978. Ishawata tubing (main triangle). When I bought it was in decent condition but needed general refreshing - rust here and there, bar tape to change, some polishing. Thanks to your instructional videos it looks almost like new. There is one thing which cannot be restored though - on the top tube there are tear-shaped rust dots and there are inside - just below the last layer of the paint I guess. Other than the frame look good. I bought it quite cheap in Poland where I live, so it was anyway a good choice for restoration. Greetings from Poland!

A nice bike... Guess they are more common in the Netherlands.. That 600 groupset with the scrolling was nice. Do not see those buff saddles around much these days.. Used to get a bit soggy in the rain when new until they wore smooth.. Those gear levers . never tried those . Ok to operate using side of the finger I guess when close to the frame .. Early Aero. . Like to see a Holdsworth Professional team bike rebuild one day !

Thanks, Andy, for showing us another interesting bike restoration. Your attention to the details makes such a difference to the end product and to the enjoyability of the video. By the way, if you have a recommendation for an economy grade 27 x 1/4" city road tyre I would like to hear it!
