Great series! Thx for sharing and agree that you do not have to be a super fit cyclist to enjoy bikepacking.

Too many people put off their first trip for too many reasons. I need proper gear, I need a better bike, I need to be more fit, or ride farther. So untrue. It's about working within whatever gear or physical limitations you have. I'm old, broken, hurting, but I still ride what I can..... and I like cinnamon buns.... LOL

When people don't approve, I smile and tell them to ask the question, how many do i give? Life is our own journey, however long and interesting or short and dull it maybe. I don't intend to worry about what the world wants as I know it doesn't have my best interests at heart, so I smile and mosey on. Along the trail we meet some interesting folks and cool mo-fo's as well as badasses. But me, I just roll on; I've done my part for Queen & country, raised the kids and buried a person who was to be my life companion, so i know she's out there, time to join her spirit whilst i wait until we are together again. It's all good. Great video.

Great series of videos that I'm enjoying immensely! You're right, there are too many losers out there that just don't care and lazy to boot. A bad "2-fer" combination. I can't relate (and don't want to) being in that awesome back country and thinking "just leave our trash here". Kudos for "being prepared".

I was lucky that the culprits also left 4 empty ice bag, that I quickly filled up, so after bagging it up, I put it in the outhouse for the night. In the morning I walked the bags out to the road, waited and intercepted to a couple of loggers heading to work. They nicely agreed to drive around all day with 4 bags of garbage in the back of their truck, and dispose fo them when they got home. Nice guys.

Enjoying this series so far, and some of the different styles you've edited with. Wondering how you plan your routes and decide where to go?
@SaltyBeard_Adventures3 жыл бұрын
Where I go is based on many factors. Could be placed I already know but have never cycled, or places others have told me about. Sometimes it’s just me endlessly looking over maps. As for how I plan? First I see how many days I have x by the distance I feel like riding... boom - design a route. Then I work out the logistics of food, supplies, maybe extra charging needs etc. It’s always best to under estimate so you can over delivery when you need to. But I also design routes with easy outs for emergencies. Much of this is because I usually ride solo, and have to get back to my day job, safe & sound. I use RideWithGPS for building routes, and any alternate routes. Then download them into my GPS head unit. I also will carry a book with notes, just in case my electronics crap out.
@JMS4123 жыл бұрын
Another great installment! Do you record all of your filming on one action cam from different perspectives, or do you use multiple cameras? Also do you edit while on tour, or wait until the tour ends and then compile all of your footage? I enjoy watching you, Ryan Duzer, and the other bike touring adventurers and always try and better understand their filming setups. Once again Beautifully done!
@SaltyBeard_Adventures3 жыл бұрын
Previous to this trip, I shot everything on my iPhone 11, and just prior to this trip I got my first GoPro (7 Black). I shoot from the bike with the GoPro, with a surfers bite grip. it allows me to pop it out of my handlebar mount, and move it around, or into my mouth for an angle that I find better than helmet or chest cam. On this trip I had a helmet mount and never used it. I use my phone for b-roll stuff, photos, etc. I edit after. I don't bring anything with me to edit. other than maybe trimming down clips or deleting a few shots that didn't work. This is also the first "big" trip that I filmed, and learned a lot. Things that I should have shot, or shot differently, or wasted my time with. I din't have a real story plan/vision like I did with my 2-3 day trips before. I just kind of was winging it documenting stuff along the way. The smoke threw most of my shooting plans out he window and it was frustrating. I didn't realize how much I was "missing" until I started editing at home. Some things, like camp set-up/tear down, seems redundant after I shot it a few times, but one quickly forgets that when creating episodes and these are key elements of the story... I have a photography background, and I have found that what I "envision" is seldom what I capture when it comes to video. Part of it is gear, but the hardest part is the storytelling process. Which is all new to me, coming from a stills background. But I'll learn... one trip at a time.

From 3:30 to 4:00 you're riding through sparse tree growth. Is that alpine, and vegetation is stunted because of weather? Or is it recently logged? I've been in similar areas around Kamloops few times and it felt alpine, but also didn't seem that high. EDIT: and I wonder if clams are invasive from motorboats being brought from other waterbodies.
@SaltyBeard_Adventures3 жыл бұрын
The area has natural breaks and meadows... the area between 3:30~4:00 is old ranch land. No Kamloops and area is not “alpine” however it does have lots of natural grazing lands. As for the clams, I haven’t found much information regarding these types of bivalves. I found reference to several types of freshwater clams that are from the last ice age. This could be the case given local geography.
