Hey Luc, I would check on the FB group or message @stagecoach400 on IG. Main thing you'd want to get is the most recent GPX file in case a trail section has been washed out. Bikpeacking.com usually has a lot of good tips in the comments of relevant pages as well. You'll definitely want to make sure you have enough food and water for the long stretches of desert, so plan accordingly. We took our time and camped a few nights and stayed at an Airbnb in SD and hotel in Alpine. It was a nice mix. This route seems perfect in the late spring, but I could see summer getting way too hot. Would this be doable in a surly disc Lang haul trucker? I want to go bikepacking but also enjoy bike tours. I don’t have the budget for two hikes.

Hey there, it really comes down to your frame's tire clearance and the tire width you can use. Your bike looks like it can only fit up to 700x47c (29x1.85") tires, which can work on a lot of this route--except for the loose sand segments. I would just do a custom alternative route that goes through adjacent areas if you really want to tour the region with what you have. I got my Marin Pine Mountain a few years back because I was on a tight budget as well, but it can fit up to 27.5x3" or 29x2.6" tires. I've run 700x47 and could ride pretty much everything except super muddy climbs and loose sand. If they had more tread they may do a bit better, but plus tires (2.8-3") are highly recommended on the official route. Hope that helps!

21:38 - where was that, and how long were the parts you had to carry/push your bike through?

That is sometimes referred to as "The Willows" which is in Yucca Valley towards the end of the route on the NW side of Anza-Borrego Desert. It is about 4 miles worth of hiking over creek boulders and not a clear trail in some of the area.
