Still have my 1979 Honda CBX that I bought new in 1983 for $2800 OTD, even have the original PDI sheet from the Honda dealer! My CBX is now turbocharged and is a beast some 44 years later. It will go to my grave with me.

@@cycledragCBX is a great motorcycle ahead of its time. I had a '81 with Prolink suspension. It is a bit top heavy. But smooth once you get going. The front forks are a little under done for that motor and weight. You can add air to them to form them up. But the brakes are nowhere near up to the job. I rebuilt mine with braided lines, New Master, everything and still weak. The rear brake actually works better than the front. So that tells you something. It was also too tall for me. Seat height 32 inch. So I sold mine. Went in a container back to Japan

The cbx didn’t sell because…. Honda had a price premium even back then. The bike had cooling problems in traffic, particularly the two middle cylinders. A lot had hydrolock damage due to leaking petcocks, the starter was strong the connecting rods weren’t. It was the best sounding motorcycle I can remember, and the look of that motor with no frame rails in the view line is one of the most iconic images all time for bikes.
@drhkleinert8241

The biggest prob at the CBX is and was the alternator, on my CBX i had to change/repair it two times. Its really fckng when your big big didnt start after switch off bec the battery is empty every time. The frame was worse so its really bad to drive a little bit faster on curves. No, its a big impressive monster but the only different to other bikes were the two cylindres more. Thats it.

All the bikes were great! Loved seeing the 750 H2s! Mine was bored .040 over, ported, Denco chambers, K&Ns, clip-ons, could not keep the front end on the ground, crossed up out of the corners, no problem, so light and flickable. More fun than anything I've ever experienced. Lucky to be alive.

I had a 74 H2, ( bought for 250 bucks from fellow soldier) took to Columbus to speed shop that built these to race. Bored 30 over, heads cut .060, expansion chambers, ported and different 'squigge" bands cut into the heads, 38 mm Mikunne smooth bore carbs, wheelie bar and 5"slick. All I can say is you better be ready for a ride when you came off the lights!!! Sadly, sold it for 500 bucks in 83 after I started racing a KZ 1000 prepped by RC Engineering, another hell of a ride down the 1/4 and 1/8th.

I was at that auction, selling off much of my father’s collection. There were a ton of CBX’s in the auction (one was ours) and a ton of Kawasaki H1 & H2’s. It’s hard to get a good price when there are a dozen more of the same model coming up. There aren’t that many people at the auction who MUST have a certain bike and are willing to drive up the bid when there are a bunch more coming u in the next day or two.

Set a reserve & don't be in a hurry. Someone out there will just have to have it. Don't settle..
@timothyrobinson9598
@timothyrobinson9598 8 ай бұрын
If you have time and are willing to hold out, I agree with your sentiment. I provided this as an option to my father’s widow. She really had a few options - Auction would be the fastest way to liquidate the collection (we had 46 bikes at this auction) but one risks not getting the price it could fetch as you never know who will show up to auction. Selling them one at a time would be the most likely path to maximize value, but would take months if not years to liquidate the collection. She chose speed. They were her bikes, so her choice. We had reserve on for about 40% of the bikes in this auction, some met/exceeded the reserve, some we dropped the reserve to sell the bike. In our case we really needed to factor in the cost of not selling (transport the bike back, storage, relisting somewhere else, etc.) as part of the decision. In the end, we are happy with what we got out of the auction, but my point still remains, it is hard to maximize value for a bike if there are 10 more of the exact same year, make, model, and color in the auction. There just weren’t a dozen people desperate for a 1979 Maroon and black Honda CBX in that auction, so many of them wen’t for less than they would have if sold through other channels.

I took a motorcycle mechanics class in high school in 88 and 89 and Honda had donated something like 6 or 8 of the CBX and 2 of the CX 650 turbos to the school because they did not sell well. I know tech schools across the country got them. I would say the CX turbo was far more ahead of it's time than the CBX but both were cutting edge.

The CBX didn't sell well because it's too wide so it doesn't corner well. Honda made the CBX to show what they can do. They never expected it to sell in big numbers. They introduced monoshock suspension on dirt bikes at the same time.

@@cycledrag I have always been very impressed over your videos (and have told you so several times) and only the Leno one - that many others also commented on being to much Lenon, notenough bikes - could have been better, easily.. Just tell him/her to have focus on, what the video is about, if he/she gets a chance again. I can't answer questions like yours - I'd ride anything I owned, if I could afford to. If I could pick any bike, and do with it, what I wanted to, I'd pick the most expensive and sell it and buy a better house, a few more usable bikes and go to the dentist.. Currently #4 has 105k miles on it with virtually no maintenance done. Oil, filter, rotors, chain and sprockets and one turn signal bulb. Valves were looked at with 40k on it, carbs are untouched and spark plugs I replaced after 60k miles). It's a Honda.

What was weird was that the bikes were getting some strange bids especially the Buell XBRR of which only 50 were made & sold to licensed race privateers (most of which were dealers). All the sudden the bids stopped and many were withdrawn and not heard of again. Can you dig down on that? Thanks for the great video!.

Saw a Suzuki that I want but it's a little intimidating for a little guy like me, if I can afford to be there I'll try to make it... regardless could meet some cool people like you sir! Thanks!

Back in the day I had Kawasaki H1's, but mostly 750 H2's. I agree with all comments made. If the H2 encountered anything resembling a corner it handled like a bucket of oatmeal but get it aimed straight and you better be hanging on. Of course they had their quirks, every one I had the oil injection pump crapped out ... but no biggie. Just bypass it and run straight premix. And of course step one was to jettison the 3 into 3 exhaust in favor of 3 into 1 stinger. Now, that was an exhaust note.

... Oil injection, had a friend with a H2. he said you got to wire the injector wide open to keep it from seizing, guess what? We made him ride in the back of the pack going to Laconia 'Back in The Day'. Mosquito control had nothing on him. A old tip: racers kept the oil injector as it was but added 10% 2-Stroke oil to the gas to end the seizing problem.

John Kraman is azz best. Speaking of Z's, I had a Kawasaki ZR-1. Absolutely loved this bike. Would drive it home to Chicago from Illinois State on weekends...to see my girlfriend (wife). The bike had a sweet exhaust note. 30-years later, just sold a 1200-mile Harley Softail Deluxe (woman's bike--low seat), but still have a BMW R70 and...a Yamaha Serow 225? Nice to tool around. First bike(?), a 3hp Clinton minibike from Steinberg Baum. Would incessantly ride back and forth in our alley. Graduated to a yellow Honda Z50. Wanted a Harley 90 but my mother objected to the 60mph speedometer. Next up was a Yamaha YZ 250. Upgraded the suspension travel with a kit from D&G. A lot of torque, fun to ride. Then drove to Anderson, IN (after hours), along with my friend Dave Larson with his dad pulling a trailer with an International Harvester Scout and we purchased two lime green KS-125 enduros. A special time. We'd ride behind a Holiday Inn until someone reported us. My friend and I had swapped bikes so I hand his awesome Honda MR-175. Over-exuberant cops came flying in lights ablaze, siren wailing. Helmets off, we took off. I approach a street and the dirt on the back of the curb had eroded so when I came to it I pulled the front end and got t-bones by an unsuspecting driver. Luckily I had the front end up because the car's impact missed my leg. Still, I hit the windshield, and again...luckily, I flew quite a distance and landed across and down the road a piece but in the grass. MR-175 turned into a pretzel. Minor head trauma (ear surgery), broken collar bone, hole punched into the leg. Unconscious for 12 hours. 2 weeks in hospital. Get this: As if I were. Billy the Kid, they put an officer at my door upon leaving. I didn't make the newspaper front page, but page 2 headline and full page length photo--Cyclist fleeing cops struck by auto--of me on the ground waiting for an ambulance. My mom wrote A star is born, in the article. Ushered--in cuffs-- to the department. Ultimately, the charges dropped, but as a 15-year-old, I had to use paper route money to pay for the car and the bike's damage. My KS-125 was unscathed. Eventually, I brought the bike to college and would park it in my dorm room--on the third floor. Of the bikes, my favorites were the Z50 Honda and the ZR-1. Currently looking at the Indian FTR (my dad had an Indian). Question: Do Harley riders generally accept Indians (motorcycles)? Oh, and I had a Kawasaki KZ-750 which I rode from Schenectady, NY up through Canada and back down to Chicago. Woefully underdressed. I recall stopping at a Mcdonald's and trying to peel my frozen hands off the grips. Still, nice ride. The last claim to "fame" was blasting through the AZ hills on a Baja-winning Husqvarna, doing an endo, and coming to rest against a cactus. The cactus needles pierced my gloves, some broke off when I removed my leather gloves. I straightened my hand and the broken needles became forever entombed under my skin. A trophy if you will. Kept riding at a hectic pace and eventually blew the race bike's engine. The moral: Do not lend me your bike!😮

Owned a silver '79 CBX fresh out of the crate from 84 to 94. Did the usual mods, 6 into 1 equal length header, rejet, SW Street Stroker rear shocks, ATK fork brace, and a beautiful color matched Tracy sport fairing. The only real problem in my 20k mile ownershop was the base gasket popped at the left cylinder causing an oil leak. Ripped it apart and replaced with factory stock (it really wasn't that hard) and it happened AGAIN 🤬 Turns out...my 🤬 Honda dealer had sold me old factory stock.......just a paper gasket...the NEXT one I bought had a neoprene reinforcement!!!! Problem solved. Fun fact, Bike comes stock with a 4.25 by 18 rear tire. My buddies loved it when I lit it up in their driveways 😁. Had to sell when I went into business for myself. Should have robbed a bank instead. I miss you CBX 😥

CBX , I've been a fan since they came out! Double my H2 cyl's and get 10,000 Rpm, Formula One sound.I think they didn't sell well because people couldn't get past the super wide inline six in your face. I just thought Damn my H2 looks so Puny...Honda was about to make F1 history starting in 1983 with their racing automobile prowess!

@@zman5727 You're right My H2 was a drag racer , didn't handle worth a crap. The CBX same thing, straight line fast (others faster), but made that beautiful sound! The problem with Formula 1 today, bad sound. They're changing the engines in 2025 or 6 to get some of the sound back. Racing is much about the awesome exhaust sounds! Bring back my TZ 750!!!! Handling and sound!

If Honda remade the CBX1100, air oil cooled, with 110 horsepower, and 80 ft lbs of torque, and focused on it handling good, and looking like the Royal Enfield 650 (proper vintage look, not half vintage) it would sell like crazy. One of the only motorcycle engines in the world that has perfect crankshaft and piston balance (primary and secondary) is in the inline 6. Straight 6 engines are electric smooth because of their inherent design.

A bike I never see at auction: I got married in '74. Got the wife a horse and I got my pick of motor cycles. There was the iconic Honda 750 (I had a 500-4 at the time) BMWs, Norton 850 Commandos, Kawi 900s, Last gasp Triumphs, the Suzuki Rotary, and the new naked Honda Gold Wing. I couldn't find a new Ducati 900 SS but I won't say I settled, for a Moto Guzzi 850 Interceptor. Its been one of my favorites. Wish I never sold it.
