This bike (42WLA70273) is actually one of the last war 45's, produced in late June ~ early July 1945. This type VII was intended for Russia, but it probably never made it there; after VJ-day all deliveries stopped, and even shipments on their way were called back and bikes were finished as civvy WL's and sold. This most probably is one of these refinished WLA's

The fact that Craig can just pull out a canvas bag of tools and fix a bike that’s almost 80 years old is so impressive to me.

With the tools I carry on the bikes alone, I could break down %90 of the bike ,so if it couldn’t be fixed on the side of the road, it needs a towing anyway. 7/16, 1/2, 9/16 , 5/8 🔧, 3/16, 1/4, 5/32, 3/8 hex and a couple of T’s, 25,27,41, %75 can be dismantled with these alone. Go to a local hardware store pickup a kit for a Briggs & Stratton mower motor and your golden. These people worked on plenty of engines. And of course this was okay until manufacturers started putting in ecms. Craig was sounding giddy as a school girl. Kind of like Burt Reynolds used to laugh. That's a beautiful WLA. It was stone cold reliable, easy to kick start and good on gas. The previous owner had done a great flame on black point job and molded the whole frame and tanks in. My first road bike in 1972 was a WLA Harley. They are indeed military vehicles. 90,000 produced. I bought mine in Western Australia. Australia was a major base involved in fighting Japan. There was an immense amount of war surplus around when I was a kid. Petrol motor Detroit Dozers. Chevy Trucks. We used them as cranes to move and load tree. It had maroon paint, chromed springer forks off a 1200 Sidecar unit, ride control and a bigger back tyre. Im still riding , 1900 Roadliner.

the wla is not original anyway . HD made 90,000 of these for the war all titled 1942. army models were olive drab, no chrome . black-out headlight, taillight, 18 inch wheels, air box/filter attached to the carb with a hose, 3 speed with reverse if it came with a sidecar. 26hp with aluminum heads , 6to1 compression ,21.5hp 4.75 compression.the 45 was made from 1929 thru 1973 making it the longest production run for hd.i have lovingly owned 2 trikes for 33 years i' had many other hd's none as much fun as these, they are a labor of love if you use them, daily tappet adjustments if you ride hard 4-500 miles a day and thats a long day.gentlemen enjoy this machine ....

I'm guessing the not-the-throttle twist grip is for manual spark advance. At idle the spark advance is 4 degrees or so BTDC. As the RPMs increase, the spark advance has to be increased to around 14 degrees BTDC (old, low RPM engines). So, as you roll on the throttle, you also have to roll on the spark advance in a synchronized fashion. Cars had the same deal, but the control was a lever on the steering column. Eventually, this was handled automatically. At first, this was done with a pair of weights with springs that flew out as the RPMs increased causing the plate the points were mounted on to rotate and thus increase the spark advance. Now it is done electronically.
