Very interesting review, I bought a 2021 Himalayan to replace a 7 year old 60k honda. I'm so impressed with its build quality, easy to service, not had to adjust valves in 9k miles, 90+miles per gallon. I dont own a car and use this bike nearly every day.. I say nearly every day, in may this year I pop to bike shop to get a new pair of gloves and came away with a second hand very low mileage 650 continental gt as a weekend toy. I now avoid bike shop as I really love the classic 350...

A well-considered analysis of 'biking-Needs' . We often need reminding that our 'current' bike is fine . I can't stop admiring the RE650 though , it is a very well-engineered machine and reminds me of what I rode in the 70's , without the oil-leaks and break-downs . Dave NZ

Royal Enfield has done a good job of getting their bikes in the hands of KZbinrs to spread the word about their bikes. I’ve had a VStrom 1000 for several years, and have been considering a smaller bike for some time. Approaching my mid-60’s has made me think about having something easier to handle. I recently purchased a used Interceptor 650. The bike only had 1000 miles on it, so I just avoided the breaking in process. So far, I have been impressed by the bike. Is it as good as my VStrom? No. But it costs about half what a new VStrom costs. It really can’t compare. If I had a NC750, I would find choosing between it and the Enfield a challenge. Having a windscreen is quite valuable in cooler weather or on longer trips. The Honda is a Honda-with the positives and negatives that brings. Most lack the character of the Enfield. Of course, character doesn’t get you home after a long day’s ride. You know you can usually count on the Honda. I like the Enfield, but I’m keeping the VStrom. I’ll ride the Enfield on nice days closer to home, and take the VStrom on longer trips. If I only had one bike, I would probably go with the sure reliability of a Honda. The Enfield sure is pretty though, and I may trust it more as I put more miles on it.

Your sentiments are spot on Alvin. The Enfield would be a no brainer as a second bike for me. But as my one and only bike, although not as distinctive or pretty, the Honda's everyday practicality is hard to beat.

I wont pretend that I put tons of thought in to it because I got lucky and found my bike used for a great deal but this is why Im so glad I got a Moto Guzzi. My bike has loads of character, turns heads all the time, but has decades of refinement making it an extremely reliable machine. On top of that it's super easy to work on for someone just starting out.

loooool so you think Enfield is not reliable? some are running since 30-40 years in Indian conditions broken roads muds etc. These things are hard to kill People go to mountains, tour deserts, hill stations, off road everything with these Enfield bikes.

There are very few Enfields in the part of the US where I live. My only experience with them is from a friend who sold them briefly in the late 90’s-early 2000’s. I realize their reliability has improved greatly in the last 20 years, but KZbin videos and second-hand reports don’t matter to me unless I find my bike to be reliable. I maintain my bikes and treat them with mechanical sympathy. As a result, I’ve had only 2 breakdowns in nearly 40 years of riding. I’ve come to expect reliability in modern bikes, and the Enfield should be no different.

Hi Alvin, I too have a Vstrom, but 650 & at 75yrs old it's getting a bit heavy in the city for me. I don't want to finish riding, so I want something lower, & I love classic bikes. I don't know what to have yet, but I just fancy the Enfield. I am a Brit, living in Thailand

I've had my Interceptor for 9 months and about 2,400 miles. I'm still happy with it. It checks quite a few boxes for me: it looks *great*, it sounds great, gets great gas mileage (about 55-60mpg), it handles well, there's lots of aftermarket stuff. It'll cruise all day at 75mph no problem. Power and torque are plenty for most purposes. The brakes work fine, the ergonomics are fine. And it has a likeable personality. But it's not a bike I'd want to ride to Alaska on. Or even 200 miles. The reason being that the suspension and seat are kind of stiff and cobby. Around town it's fine but it wouldn't be fun riding it all day long. That and the right mirror vibrates. Also, it's hard to impossible to read the digital gas display in bright sunlight. Those are my only complaints. I've got four bikes in the garage and the Interceptor is my main squeeze. Good review. New subscriber.

I bought an Interceptor as a second bike to run alongside a Versys that I had at the time , the service intervals aren't really an issue , especially if you do it yourself & the bike once run in is an absolute joy ! You don't need any more power than it gives tbh . I've had great fun personalising it and parts and accessories are plentiful ! As for handlebars forget the Triumph ones which will be a Kings ransom ...the black alloy Himalayan ones fit perfect , lower the bars and cost me £50 ! I've justified having both bikes because they do different things ! I don't think there are any questions over the Interceptors reliability anymore tbh and certainly in the UK the dealers give excellent service ....so prise your wallet open and just buy it ! Good review ! 👍🏻

Nice review! I was considering the Int 650 and Triumph bonneville. I wound up with the Int650, put a comfort seat on it, 865S&S kit etc and found it to be enjoyable with extra torque. I ride the Int650 the most out of a shed full of bikes including BMW twins, which I've always found comfortable for long rides, as opposed to the Ducatis I still own. I sit on just over 4K revs doing 110KMPH down the freeways and usually my rides last for 4-6 hours at a time on this bike. As for the valve adjustments, after the initial check, I check and adjust them every 10K. Racked up nearly 20k without any issues and looking forward to the next 20K.

I have a triumph Street Twin, some will see the 5 speed gear box as a negative but at 110kph it sits around 3250 rpm. On the plus side, it has loads of torque that comes from low revs. I was also looking at the Royal Enfield when purchasing a bike but went for the Triumph 😀

The Interceptor has tube tyres. A puncture would mean fitting a tube at the roadside. The twin shocks and twin exhausts look as though they would get in the way of fitting large panniers

Actually, the tires are tubeless type, but because of the spoked rims, an inner tube is fitted. However, there are kits available to upgrade the rims to be able to run tubeless

Very nice review and from a good mind set. I have a INT 650 (in the USA) and it has 19k miles on it with no issues. For the service record in the US it's valve check at 6k miles (@ intervals of 6,000 mi/10,000 Km) and an easy job to do. Now what I really liked about your video is I am looking for more of a touring bike and the NC750x is on the top of my list. I will look for your NC review and I do know the seat is it's real con.

At time mark 8:48 to 9:45, the sun hitting the side of the tank shows a really pretty paint scheme that should be used for this bike. It shows, to me, a silver w/black fade-in in the tanks knee cutaway, like where one can install the bulky rubber knee pads. I think this looks great on this bike and really makes the tanks paint scheme "Pop"....... if it were my bike that's the first thing I'd do is re-paint that area.....but I'm weird like that. RE really should have a flip tank cap. How's the engine brake? The RE would be much better too if the rims were tubeless, which they are not, so road repair is going to be a chore. Good stuff BIL

Good report! Lots to think about there, as always when a new bike is on the agenda. There's plenty of affection for all RE's recent efforts in this part of the world and they're selling very well. So they must be doing something right. Modern classics / retros are becoming very popular. I chose the Kwak Z650RS in grey with a hint of orange over the MG V7 Special. It was a close call but Kawasaki have served me well over the past few years. My last Ninja 650 was a surprisingly comfortable middleweight sportsbike that I saw as a younger sibling to the bigger SX. With OEM accessory cases she was great for light touring. I'm 77 now Paul and the new bike is brilliant, light, agile...just great. When I get old I might finish off with the small Italian shaftie for easier maintenance and to satisfy a long held desire to one day own a Guzzi. Cheers BIL, keep up the good work. Popeye 😉

Thanks for a good and interesting review. I downsized to a Honda NC in 2018 after too 'long on' big overpowered overweight bikes. The Triumph twins, and the Interceptor (in the UK, just known as RE650 in some countries) were also on my radar. The NC is, without a doubt in my mind, the most sensible, practical machine for all round use. As swiss army knife as any bike can be. Practical sensible, reliable...all that stuff that makes it the head choice. However, the heart choice of a Z900RS beckoned and I went up in size again for a couple of years until I realised it was, again, too big for most requirements. The heart had also considered the Speed Twin 1200 earlier, but the head had said the Street, now Speed twin 900 would be the sensible option. Looking at the Honda NC, it undercuts those by a good margin and adds to the head decision. Now, I (re)discovered Royal Enfield which until recently had still not ridden. I demo'ed a Scram, Interceptor, and latterly a Classic 350 and Himalayan. Short story, I would have all three (or four; subtle differences in the Scram and Himalayan), but was able to trade the Z for the first two. The Interceptor is a surprisingly good comparison to the NC. Your analysis is probably spot on. The NC is still the most sensible choice in ticking all the boxes, including a few more with some weather protection and other aspects the Interceptor lacks. But the Interceptor has a characteristic all RE's seem to possess with a spirit lost in many modern bikes. A simplistic charm, an almost bewitching experience in riding them. It handles superbly - far better than the NC I'd say, not that the NC is lacking - and the engine is a far simpler gem of a unit. The frequent service intervals are not too bad, in my opinion, and the simpler service is somewhat cheaper (here) to offset things. I don't doubt it will do much the same as the NC over time and be just as reliable. Got to remember, (here) it is still cheaper than the NC. Problems I keep reading about on Triumphs hold/held me back, but the Street twin 900 is still a desirable bike. But price...both the Interceptor and NC have it over a barrel. I was interested in your comment on the handlebar position. An early adjustment I made to simply rotate back towards me. I think the dealers must have some odd desire to place them too upright, or maybe they just come fitted in crate from factory that angle. I have to say I feel about the Interceptor in a way I didn't about the NC. The trusty NC750X was replaced with a bike I love. But, fortunate to also have the Scram as well, I have to say that is stealing my heart. Although if pressed the NC is still the analytical choice, the Scram has those same spiritual RE qualities that set it over the NC. It's rugged, simple a BLAST to ride and the world is all around to enjoy whilst doing so.

Very good, thoroughly thought out review. My son’s Interceptor is in my garage which I occasionally take out for a short spin and I find it has ample power for me. As you know there are many accessories/changes you can make to make it your own. My son has changed the handlebars for black bars similar to the Triumphs, added bar end mirrors, Scorpion cans from Hitchcocks, different indicators etc. The real plus from my point of view is the ease of servicing. As you say, like the NC750X, valve adjustment is simple and I’m no mechanic. However, between it and the Speed Twin, the Triumph wins hands down.

Astectitics often are the number one determiner wheh buying bikes, as are exhaust note and price. However, my experience your happiness with the bike is usually determined by comfort, reliability and performance . So I guess it comes down to what you value most - how the bike moves you at the time of purchase or how you like it to live with.

Like your balanced thinking inclucluding being grateful and appreciative of what you have already without having to have something else or more all the time. I Might just be content with what I have perhaps. Keep the money for any repairs on my baby. Like to add though that local dealer told me that after the first valve clearance adjustment on the RE they never find the need to re do them again. Just oil change filter and other stuff like air filter clean and chain adjustment. And.... 3 year warranty stands even doing servicing yourself, just need to keep a record. Ride safe ... I have done all the servicing on my Interceptor. They do not need servicing more than any other motorcycle. The interval is 6,000 miles. The confusion arises because the factory manual says "I" for inspection of oil level and other jobs. This is at 3,000 miles. No need to change oil, adjust valve clearance etc for 6,000 miles. I set my valve clearance at 500 miles, did it again at 5,500 miles. The valve clearance is easy to do and you can guarantee to complete the job in less than an hour. not the case with shims where you have to purchase the shims, if available, and the service can take weeks. The service intervals are not an issue, the interval same as a Triumph.

Maybe keep the motorcycle that you have, and buy a second one, possibly a used single cylinder KTM, Husqvarna or Royal Enfield more for 60 mph or less. I find it is very helpful to have 2 very different bikes, and fun to ride them back to back. One is a V-twin with a 95 mph top speed, and one is an inline 4 with a 145 mph top speed that won races from 2000 to 2002, until Honda came out with a faster 600cc. If one needs a new battery or new tire, I ride the other one until I get around to fixing it.

Great review, I've always liked your honesty and appreciation for motorcycles of a certain variety. I find I have similar tastes in bikes, and am probably in your age group, that being said. After owning many motorcycles over the decades, I ended up on a 1998 Honda Valkyrie, a fantastic beast that handled well for its size, with torque to spare. Then during the lockdown of 2020 I found a excellent deal on a 2012 Honda NC 700s, the NC's have always peeked my interest, so I snatched it up, even though I liked the x model better at the time. The NC soon proved to be such a balanced and efficient ride, that brought so much fun factor, that I ended up selling my Valkyrie. Just wasn't spending enough time on it. So back to the Interceptor... I have been considering a classic look as well, without all the farkle of the Triumph, or BMW. Too much tech for my likes. After watching your video, I feel a test ride is in order, although the NC will be hard to beat.

Hi, Paul ... congrat´s for your truly deep and thoughtful analysis of the RE Interceptor. I´ve met this bike in Brazil a while ago, did 2 test ride already. I´ve been a BMW GS rider for years, and nowadays a long fan of the T100´s/T120´s proposal. They are certainly better bikes in engineering, tech, quality and power if compared to the RE Interceptor, but since the local TH dealer does not allows you to ride test them, it just contribute to the fact that as each day goes by, I find very difficult to justify these to cost twice the RE Interceptor. And I do like the RE interceptor design better than the Speed twin, mostly because its allow whells, for me they don´t match with the bike style ... By the end of the day, they are all fun bikes to ride ..... I´m very inclined to the RE Interceptor in a near future. Cheers from BR.

Thanks Renato! I've tossed around the idea of buying an Interceptor VS a T100 as well and the extra pricing is probably justifiable for the Triumph. Having said that, for myself I think I would still go with the Interceptor and set aside some money for suspension, seat and handlebar upgrades.

Hi Paul .. pricing diference in BR ( 100% on the top of the RE) is much higher than in the USA ( 50% plus) .. exactly, I would change the seat, put a wind screen and end bars mirrors ... the balance (opportunity cost in financial terms) on the purchasing cost, well invested in 3 years, is huge if comparing both bikes .. and due the fact that it would be a weekend bike ( i move around in a scooter in a daily basis), vs. twice spending does not makes sense .. tnks and congrats again !! @@BikesILike

Excellent video! I myself ride an NC 750 S, and am considering a 650 Royal Enfield too. But the service interval might bring me to the workshop twice a year, plus the fact that it costs 10k € in Switzerland, and I could get a Moto Guzzi V7 or a Triumph Street twin for the same money or 1k more, it's obviously too expensive here. Not worth it's price. It costs 2,5k less in Germany, whereas the Guzzi and Triumph are at the same price as here.... I find this quite strange.
@geraldscott4302
@geraldscott4302 2 жыл бұрын
The HUGE problem with the Interceptor 650 is its tube type tires. I live in Arizona, U.S., and here flat tires are a fact of life, especially with tube type tires. which can literally be punctured with a wooden toothpick (I've seen it done) or a cactus thorn, and when punctured, there is NO way to fix them beside the road. You have to call a tow truck. BIG $$$$$$. I have a bought new 2013 Royal Enfield B5 Bullet, converted to an Amal carburetor, with an aftermarket exhaust, both from Hitchcocks. I never ride it more than 35 miles from home, because I don't want to exceed the towing limit of my road service plan. A bike with tube type tires is simply unacceptable for actually going anywhere on. In the U.S. it will cost $700-$800 for a 100 mile tow. Tubeless tires on the other hand are a LOT harder to puncture than tube type tires, lose air MUCH slower (I was almost killed once when a front tube type tire blew out at freeway speeds) and often the object that punctured it also seals the puncture, at least for quite some time. Sealers work well in tubeless tires (but not at all in tubes) and tubeless tires can also be plugged, reinflated, and you're on your way. With tube type tires, if you survive the flat, you are stranded, and it is going to cost a fortune to get the bike home. I only ride cruisers and vintage standard bikes, so I had to look up a picture of an NC750. That is one HIDEOUS bike. Downright disgusting in fact. I can't imagine being seen on something that ugly, but at least it has real tires. I have a 1989 H-D FXRS Low Rider and a 2006 H-D Sportster 1200L. Both have tubeless tires, and I'm not afraid to ride either one anywhere. And they are beautiful bikes. They also feel great and sound great.

The tires are tubeless design, but with tubes added for the spoke tops. There are ways to convert them to no tubes. I have rode a 2002 Honda Shadow 600cc VLX in Kentucky since it was new and never had a flat tire, including 3 trips to Deals Gap. It has tubes in the tires, new tubes every time I get new tires.
@geraldscott4302
@geraldscott4302 2 жыл бұрын
@@jeffruebens8355 Here in AZ, flats with tube type tires happen all the time. We have a kind of thorn hear called a "goathead" and they will easily puncture a tube type tire. I had 3-4 flats a year until I finally gave up on tube type tires. I've only had one flat during the past 200,000+ miles with tubeless tires, and was able to plug it, reinflate it, and be on my way. A flat with tube type tires requires a tow truck. I could have bought a couple of nice bikes with what I paid in towing bills because of tube type tires. Wire spoke wheels for tubeless tires have been around since at least 1986, Honda used them on the 1986/1987 Rebel 450. Many other bikes are now available with tubeless tire on specially designed wire spoke wheels. Most tubeless conversions on tube type wire spoke wheels fail, because the spokes flex, and break the seal. This is 2022, there is no reason why we should have early 1900s tire technology

17:01 Please, please, please, don't be fooled by longer service intervals. I don't know what Honda claim but if its 10 000 km between services, it is only a marketing gimmick. Modern bikes (and cars) may have better engines than 40 years ago, but oil still breaks down and fine particles will build up and cause excessive scoring on the cylinder wall during the latter term of the oil usage. Manufactures assume buyers will sell the vehicle before problems arise but if you want your engine to last, change oil and filter every 5000km (certainly no more than 8000km). Love your bike, and your bike will love you.

I think I might of misread the manual. I just downloaded the latest Australian manual from Royal Enfield to check again and the first valve clearance inspection and adjustment is at only 500 km and then every 10,000 km after that. That's still too frequent for me, I'd like to see them work to extend that. For comparison the first valve clearance inspection on my NC750X is at 25,000 km.

Yeah I find it strange dealers are not willing to offer a test ride my wife and I purchased two Honda cb500x in 2019 and had to hope all my research watching reviews paid off. We have been very happy with the bikes and always enjoy going down to our local dealer to check out the new bikes as the Honda now has improved brakes and suspension would be interesting how much better the bike would be.We are going to hire the new Honda and the NC750 while in Europe. I would like a different bike next time around as feel buying the same bike just wrong even with the improvements. I would probably spend the extra money and buy the triumph I would do some maintenance myself but use my local none dealer to do the services to save some money long term.

Yes, the service intervals are closer to each other, but...if you do it yourself what it wwill cost to adjust the valves? Nothing. But if you have a bike with shims, you will need to pay for new shims, wait for them and your bike will stay in the garage for 1 2 weeks. I have a cb500x 2021. The build quality is not so good. It has 11k km, an I need to change the tires and the stem bearings. So I prefer a bike with a shorter service interval but with a much cheaper service.

Not sure where you got your service intervals from but it’s wrong. The 5k “service” is really just an inspection check of most things with valve clearance check not needed. The valves are checked every 10k and this is also the real service intervals with oil and filter change etc..

The manual suggests oil and filter changes at 10,000 km (about 6000 miles), but I changed the oil on mine at 1000 miles since I didn’t know the service history of the bike since the previous owner passed away and I had no info on previous services. Given the amount of metal on the sump plug magnet I’d be very hesitant about waiting till 5000 miles for the next oil change. The bike uses synthetic oil, and maybe it could go that far, but since the oil change is so easy, I plan to do them every 3000 miles like I do on my other bikes. As far as valve adjustment, apparently this issue causes a lot of concern among bike owners. I’ve had over 60 bikes in my 40 years of riding, and valve adjustments are seldom needed. If they are frequently, I’d be concerned about the quality of the engine. Hopefully the Enfield won’t need adjustment that often.
@morri03
@morri03 2 жыл бұрын
@@alvindavenport5657 interesting about the sump magnet. I’ve not found any metal on mine. If you look at the manual it’s 10,000km or 12 months so like every bike you should change it at least once per year. The 500km initial valve check is important as the valves close up on engine breakin and are usually tight at this point and need adjusting

@@TheWuseln the stock seat allows for moving forward and more particularly backwards. One issue with sliding back is the Enfield 650s are already very heavy on the rear wheel because of the stock exhaust silencers. I changed to lighter ones and it helped a lot with weight distribution.
