Biking Virginia: The New River Trail - Episode 1 (Foster Falls to Ivanhoe)

Beautiful river views, bridges, tunnels, historical railroad artifacts, and a 150 year old Shot Tower. All these await you when you bike Virginia’s New River Trail - designated an official National Recreation Trail by the US Department of the Interior. New River Trail is 57 miles long with many access points to the trail. On our ride we went from Foster Falls, the New River State Park’s headquarters, to a few miles south of Ivanhoe. In 1986, the Norfolk Southern Railroad donated the railroad corridor, which originally served to supply the once expanding iron industry to the Commonwealth of Virginia. This ride took place on October 5, 2020.

I just spent a week camping on the New River trail. It was wonderful. Your video is beautiful. Thanks for posting this. One comment for informational purpose, bikers should always, always, yeild to horses. Many bikers don't know this rule. I've seen a biker kicked in the head for quickly riding by without warning the rider, or getting an okay to pass. Most riders stop for bikers because they know most bikers don't understand they are supposed to yeild to horses, but it should be the other way around.

Hi, Thanks for watching and for the advice about horses. It's been a couple of years since I shot the video so I don't know what I cut out vs. what you saw. I know we always try to let people know we are coming and are cautious when we are around someone/something that may not react the way we plan. Good reminder either way.

Just made plans to spend a couple of days riding The New River Trail in late April. Will ride from Foster Falls to Galax and back one day and from Foster Falls to Pulaski and back the second day. Have rented a small cottage right on the river through VRBO in the Barren Springs area and am really looking forward to the adventure.

Hi. Sounds like a great ride planned!! If you haven't ever been on the trail -- Galax is the only place you will find civilization. We didn't go the other way, but I anticipate it is even more remote. Have fun.
