pandas in the world There should be more dislikes. They imparted nothing special into Sting. Anybody with a plasma cutter and some skill at grinding could have done what they did. It's boring and yes that is likely how WETA made the sword but they are making many swords for a movie. This joker is making it as a show piece. He could have put some more love in it.

Yeahh the sword was suppose to give off a golden blow when light shone on it. Similar to the sword in the video. The movie version is also quite off from the original book design. The sword doesn’t have a trident on it.

Technically the "replica" wasn't hobbit sized, but life sized. "Sting" was an Elven Dagger from Gondolin, one of the High Elven Kingdoms in Exile. The Dwarves with Bilbo joked that it was probably a letter opener, but it was a weapon of war, a dagger. Fairly big dagger, but still... so... life-sized. Now, to a HOBBIT, it was a proper sword! Loved how you made it. Well done.

Regarding the small 'hobbit size' of Sting, you have to remember that Sting wasn't actually a sword. It was one half of a sword & dagger set and was the companion blade to the Orchrist, or The Goblin Cleaver, carried by Thorin Oakenshield in "The Hobbit". BTW, in the books both Thorin's 'Orchrist' (a.k.a. the 'Goblin Cleaver') and Gandalf's 'Glamdring' (a.k.a. the 'Foe Hammer') were both made by the elves of the 1st Age and glowed blue just like 'Sting'. If you've seen "The Hobbit, An Unexpected Journey", or read the book, you'll remember that Gandalf, Thorin & Bilbo all found their swords together in the cave of the trolls. I don't know why they changed it in the movies so that only Bilbo's Sting glowed blue around Orcs, but it was a dumb thing to do! In the book Thorin's sword, Orchrist, glowing blue was an important part of the story. You can add that to all the other needless & senseless changes they made to the story in the movies! It would be really cool if you could make Gandalf's 'Glamdring' and/or Thorin's 'Orchrist', and make them blue on one side like you did with 'Sting'!

Oh my gosh! Thank you! As one lotr book fan to another, that drives me crazy too! And I always imagined orcrist looked more like glamdring since they're sister swords. I was disappointed when the new hobbit movies came out. Normally I'm happy with weta's designs.

Elfie In Angel City I think they went with the Medieval falchion or 'chopper' design for Orchrist because of the 'Goblin Cleaver' name, but I always thought of it being a long sword too, or at least a back sword.

I do have to say that I'm pretty disappointed with the Dwarf swords in "The Hobbit" though. They're ridiculous! All of the other swords in both "The Hobbit" & the LOTR series made sense. Sure the tips were made a little too pointy to make them look prettier, but they were based on real historical swords. The dwarf swords look like something you'd see in an episode of "Xena." They should have stuck to axes for the dwarves, or at least gave them reasonable swords. Something based on viking pattern swords or maybe even something based on the Scottish basket-hilted swords would have been ideal. The dwarves are supposed to be master craftsmen for crying out loud!

I want to see this but I want to see it made in more of a traditional way. More specifically, how they forge out a straight blade and then putting clay on the base and spine of the blade then heat strengthening the exposed blade edge. I've been told that tempering it this way cause a forged straight blade to bend.

Ethan Moore because a blacksmith would have forged the blade not cut it out of plate steel and been proud of his work. Thousands of bladesmiths around the country do that kind of work. It doesn't mean what they do is wrong, but it doesn't make their work special. For a show piece that is all it will ever be a show piece you want it to be special. So a plate steel blade and a sticky tape aluminum duct tape foil inlay is lazy as crap. He should be standing there at the end ashamed of his work not proud of it.
