A second vault is what gets gymnasts into the vault final - a competition where you can get a medal on the individual apparatus. The two vault's scores are added then averaged, and the top eight scores in the qualification round go to the vault final, where the top three in the final are awarded medal.

@@dhievah you actually do. The run up has requirements for gathering speed and foot rythm. Biles did both perfectly
