Could watch the steam engine for hours. They're alive. They have a heartbeat!

Nice to see it in its element on the open sea. Not many vintage steam engines doing that any more...

Such class. Such elegance. those A-rab superyachts look like spaceships and are hidious. But, they keep a lot of people employed, so all's OK.

What a great video! Not enough steam in action videos for boats out there. This really made me feel good. Thank you for making it. I am a photographer by trade, and I often get too caught up in the awesome things I am doing to do a great job filming. Hats off to you for getting it done on what had to be an epic journey!
@WesleyHarcourtSTEAMandMORE3 жыл бұрын
I completely agree. It's a fine balance of documenting and actually being present to enjoy it yourself too! John did a good job filming this journey and was kind enough to let me post it for him.

Thanks for sharing this special voyage with us. What a cool yacht you have John. SF Bay is my sailing ground but I don't have a cool steamship.

Unfortunately it isn't my yacht either. She certainly is a beauty though, isn't she? Thank you very much for watching.

@@WesleyHarcourtSTEAMandMORE A lovely little ship doing what she was built to do. I love the ocean shots with what around here are just moderate swells. Those classic long overhangs...beauty and in a steel hull not as prone to rot in those ends either.

Seems Noisy running at sea. Most I sailed with, you could barely hear 'em run.

The straight cut gears for the valve train make for some unusual noises in a reciprocating steam engine room...

I believe I noticed Weir's style feed water and condensate pumps cycling in the background.
@WesleyHarcourtSTEAMandMORE11 ай бұрын
Yes she has a few steam auxiliary pumps for feedwater and condensate recovery. Good eyes

Excellent! I saw the boat when she was at the mystic seaport back in 2010, I was 9 at the time and am still huge into steam power. didn't get to see her engineering plant unfortunately

Thank you! I'm glad enjoyed the video, and got to see her in person. It's good to know there are younger folks getting interested in steam. It really is an fever... And the only cure is more steam whistle. Have you been on the Sabino at Mystic Seaport?

Wesley Harcourt are you kidding?! Ed (the old chief) practically tried to groom me to be her next engineer, and I am a student fireman at the RR in Essex

nice channel and subbed ya. Does California have special laws n rules for steam power boats and ship ? Knowing California ? thanks :-)
@WesleyHarcourtSTEAMandMORE5 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much! California does not have any special laws in regards to steam powered boats or ships, unlike other states. Cangarda does fall under U.S. Coast Guard regulations though.

Bonjour Wesley, What a voyage ! How lucky you were ! I would not have imagined that this long steam yacht would have had such a small triple expansion machine. The boiler seems small too. Sometimes it seams to go a little bit slower, because of the waves ? A problem with the boiler ? And where is this boat now ? Amicalement, Raphaël
@WesleyHarcourtSTEAMandMORE5 жыл бұрын
Bonjour Raphaël, Unfortunately I did not get to experience that voyage. The video was shot by our family friend, John York. The engine is of about 300-350hp and boiler is a watertube design. She was making 9kts even in those seas. The engine was speeding up and slowing down due to the following seas... The propeller may have been breaching a bit. Cangarda is now on the East Coast of the U.S. in Maine I believe. Thank you for watching once again!

There is a place in Nova Scotia that restores Wooden Boats. I wonder if that is where she is bound to?
@WesleyHarcourtSTEAMandMORE5 жыл бұрын
Khadijah Brown believe it or not she's actually steel hulled. She did spend a lot of her early life in the 1000 islands region and made a visit there as well as Montreal a few years ago.

Thank you! The ship was eventually taken to her home on the East Coast. There are other steam ships in the bay like the Jaramiah O'brien and the Hercules. My father and I have a 40' steamboat in the Delta also. The last full weekend in September there is an annual steamboat meet at the B&W resort marina near Isleton/Rio Vista.
