Clickbait title as they may say but I think it's a fun way to think of this yacht, and in the thumbnail she really does resemble a warship!
Here we take a deep dive into the superyacht built in 2019 by Silver Yachts. And we talk about why she was where she was in the video, and who I think she was on show for.
As always let me know what you think of the video.

Not being Navy.. But I just like the look of some warship hull forms. So think my ideal superyacht may start out being based on a frigate hull, and then go from there. I guess it's the sporty look, and have read a few naval architecture books that helped me understand why they're designed that way. Then it'd be keeping nice lines for the superstructure and I think a lot of modern yachts pile the decks too high and the proportions end up looking wrong.

There are many differences between "Helipad/Touch-and-go Helipad" and a certified "Heli-deck".The most important one is the safety standard. On a commercial yacht, like Bold, a helipad can only be used to pick up and drop off. The helicopter cannot be tied down and secured/stowed for navigation. a Touch-and-go Helipad can be any surface that can hold the weight of the helicopter for a short period of time. No minimum dimension is required, but it has to be large enough so that the landing can be "safely" performed. A heli-deck is a different beast. A certified heli-deck on a commercial yacht has to have, amongst many other safety features: landing lights, fixed fire-fighting system, tie down points, safety nets, a structure that can hold 2x the weight of the helicopter (this is a requirement that enables the structure to support the weight of the helicopter in case it comes crashing down without compromising the structure's integrity), a landing circle that's 1.5x the D-value (maximum diameter of the helicopter blades when turning) of the largest certified helicopter that the yacht can carry, refueling facilties, amongst a lot more requirements This is why on some yachts, you can see tiny helipads, while on some other yachts, like U-81 or NORD you can see fully enclosed helidecks with hangars for storage and maintenance facilities. This only applies to commercial yachts. If a yacht is registered as private, you can choose wheter or not to comply with the requirements, but they are not mandatory, however the yacht cannot be used for charter.I hope this helps understand better the main differences between both.

This also has a weather component. In the navy, helicopters don't land; they perform a controlled crash on deck. ;-) This is when the deck heaves up and down due to the sea-state.

There's a huge cavate to that and that is jurisdiction. There's plenty of countries in the world who don't have strong safety requirements for commercial yachts and very few rules for charters.

It is not a stop and go helipad. It is fully certified functional helipad and in fact the heli transits with the vessel on long distance crossings. I know this as we performed the very first ever heli landing on board the vessel prior it’s initial Atlantic crossing in November 2019.

Another interesting point on the bridge windows: it's less about temperature and more about increased visibility and controlling glare. With traditional sloped windows the bridge occupants wind up positioned further back from the windows and it creates larger blind spots on the waters nearest the ship. With forward/upward sloped windows the crew can stand up against the glass and lean forward looking down and provides a larger field of view. In addition to that, when the sun is at/near the horizon the angle of the windows controls the light refraction through the panes to eliminate glare. I'd also like to point out, that the enclosed 'aft deck' closely replicates a naval vehicle bay (note the anchor points on the deck) for easy access/storage from the quarter/vehicle deck. Even the loading cranes, deck hardware and equipment has military/naval design language all over them. I did get to see the Bold briefly, it passed through our harbor here last summer. On its way out it passed by our Naval Yard, and looked like a scaled down version of our Halifax Class Frigates
@martinsaunders2942

I fully agree regarding the retrouse bridge windows. I never know why more yachts use this much more practical design. As well as reducing the heat in the bridge…and baking all the expensive electronic displays, they completely cut out the unfortunate reflections found on the more normal stylised slopping bridge windows that can seriously interfere with good lookout visibility.
@stevebarlow3154

It is noticeable that the majority of fishing boats have their bridge window sloping backwards from the top, primarily to avoid glare off the sea.
@R-Lmaxan

the reason the windows are actually angle in at the bottom like that is that if a wave happens to crash on that deck there will be less pressure on whatever they use as glazing and thus reduced the possibility of them breaking.

Im guessing part of the original reason for the military look and silhouette lies in the fact this was built in Australia. From there the main sailing areas you’d want to visit are Indonesia and PNG, Timor. If you want to get to the Med you’d also have to go through pirate prone regions off Somalia. So it makes a lot of sense to have a yacht that looks like this - rather than a gleaming palace.

I don't think it has much to do with that, the owner of this company is from Germany, he set the direction and had the first build as his private yacht. He then sold most of the company to the Chinese.

The landing pad on the roof (3rd deck I think it is) is touch and go. But the one on the stern can carry a helicopter and the platform on the winter garden can be raised up and the helicopter parked in the “hangar”. There are videos from Gibraltar with it sailing with a chopper on it. That being said: I don’t know if it has helicopter refueling facilities on board Great vid as always. Yes, it has helicopter refueling, per the brochure: "The vast aft main deck with folding hand rails and hydraulic folding bulwarks encompasses an approved helideck with D value of 13, suitable for helicopters such as an AW109. Also included is re-fuelling tank, 3000 litres capacity recessed into the deck. The 8 ton aft deck crane with 15m reach, allows the launch and retrieval of the vast array of tenders and toys that can be accommodated on this deck. Forward of the helideck, is a protected helicopter storage area that may be utilized for a crossing."

We had a Alouette helicopter stationed on board (Belgium Alouette on Dutch frigate). On its way back to the ship, it didn't have enough fuel to make a safe approach. The pilot flew back to the mainland, landed next to a petrol-station (in Norway), fuelled up and made the trip back to the ship with, this time, enough fuel for a safe approach. Refuelling isn't so difficult it seems......

This yacht reminds me of an offshore work boat or fishing boat in its basic design or perhaps an anti-submarine boat that is missing dept charge racks or hedge hog launchers. Lastly with the vertical prowl as well as lack of an flare in the bow I would suspect that this yacht would have wet decks while cruising in anything other than glass flat seas and suffer from misty decks whilst a anchor if the water was the least bit choppy. Lastly I hope this yacht has hull stabilizers, a really good gyro system and a top notch Captain and Helms men because of this long hull length compared to her relatively narrow beam will make this yacht very tricky to handle in rough and or confused seas. This general hull design was very popular in the late 1960’s and ‘70’s with fishing boats in the north western United States as well as Alaska crab/fishing boats because it made them faster without additional fuel burn as well as allowing them to carry more fishing gear and carry a bigger catch back to harbor/processors. However the captain’s and owners of these longer narrow beam boats soon learned there was a price to pay for this hull design and that was boat stability especially in rough seas and bad weather conditions because 0these boats were extremely prone to rolling overs regardless of deck loading or if the crab/fish tanks were filled or not. Captain/owners quickly started adding stabilizing out riggers that they would deploy while heading to and on the fishing grounds in an attempt to make their boats more stable. To my knowledge the ship yards that had been constructing this style of boat ceased to doing so by the late ‘70’s because of this hull design being so prone to rolling over

You must be en engineer, the main reason for having forward leaning bridge windows is to to reduce reflection for day and night navigation. Also the large sun visor protects the bridge consol fron excesive heat. I think the crew comfort would be the least consideration when it comes to yacht design.

That's why I don't care about them, they don't care about anyone but themselves. Four things: Metal hulls only. Proper crews quarters. No galley but a real kitchen. Pilot deck needs a day head, mini galley, Captains quarters that is equivalent to the VIPs stateroom.
@LewpyDrewpy714
@LewpyDrewpy714 10 ай бұрын
Forgot the other reasoning for a Portuguese bridge. If a wave crests the bow and mashes on to the bridge deck, the over head structure takes the brunt of the wave. The below deck wall to the Captain's gang way. That forward angle helps the vessel to push above the wave instead of below. Also, Captain's quarters is on the Helm's deck.

I know little about super yachts and how they are regulated. All of my technical knowledge is that of tankers. With that said SOLAS V Regulation 22 applies to vessels of 55 meters and longer. Regulation 22 addresses bridge visibility. The rule states; "The bridge front windows shall be inclined from the vertical plane top out, at an angle not less than 10° and not more than 25°." I always took this to mean that the top of the window should be closest to bow and the bottom should be farthest away from the bow. It goes on to say; "Polarized and tinted windows shall not be fitted." The windows need to reduce glare. I have found of pull-down polarized and tinted shades are acceptable. As a naval architect and marine engineer I learned early that there are many correct ways to engineer things, but the best correct way was how the Chief Engineer wanted it because he could make it work. Over my career I listened to the ship's crew, whether it be the Master or a mess person. Simple changes can improve both quality of life, health, safety and the environment resulting in improved efficiency.

In the drone footage you can see fixed loungers just under the door, and the GA shows a day head just inside. Some call those bridge widows ‘Negative Windows’ for all the reasons you say along with all the other added comments for reason for having them. Personally I prefer this design for all the practicality of the design. Good video as usual. 🙏🇨🇦👍

Our parrot would let us know when there was a drone hovering nearby, I expect he thought they were hawks or other predators. Could be a useful security alarm if you are the type of person seeking privacy. He was not kept in a cage so was always aware of possible threats.

I would hate drones zooming around my boat or house. It would give me the creeps.

Love it. Nice jazz music to mix things up too. Sorry about the blacklist though lol. "oh we know who you are" lol. You know you have arrived now sir! Also, and it may have just been on that one shot, but please don't follow on the manual focus trend that is sweeping KZbin. Instant migraine for migraine sufferers like me. Keep up the great work!

That indoor space can double as a helicopter hangar, I believe. I seem to remember that from "Super Yacht Captains" tour of Bold. The upper pad (where the loungers are in your footage) is a Touch and go. The LOWER pad is commercially certified, and that odd space at the top center of the indoor space is for the engine and folded rotors. (I was impressed -- she can basically have two helicopters on board and a third touch and go)

I love it! I tend to like the more commercial, functional styles over the flash.

Seem like such a versatile space. Lots of room for parties or carrying things. I really like the design. Having seen pictures of it with a wrapped helo on the top deck I think it must be able to carry them at least there, although in your video it's parked with the blades stopped on the aft there as well. It might be an issue of balance perhaps for them to carry it aft. I wonder how she handles the weather, it looks like it would do well.
