Thanks for the video; I've never heard of those acronyms. I liked the questions you mentioned. What helped me was when my Spanish 3 teacher in high school (many years ago) mentioned that the imperfect is like a movie reel giving background info and the preterite is like photo snapshots. The preterite contains actions that move the story forward and the imperfect is everything else in the background that gives context to the scene. I still need practice more but I try to keep these things in mind! 🙂

Preterite is like a picture. Imperfect is like a video. Both happened in the past but one is something that happened (picture) and the other is something that you can see happening (video).

I have a recommendation for those who are struggling with the past in spanish. I bought a book that has been helping me better understand the concepts why the different past tenses are used. The book is called "Perfecting the PAST in Spanish". The authors are Gordon Smith Duran and Cynthia Smith Duran. It gives breakdowns on why Spanish speakers use certain tenses at certain times while speaking. Thanks billingüe blogs. Te lo agradezco este video. Me ayuda mucho. Gracias

Got this book off your recommendation and I just wanted to comment to say thanks! That book plus this video definitely came in clutch for understanding the Spanish past then I've been using the children's books idea and speaking to natives to really reinforce the idea of which to use when.

I speak conversational Spanish well now; I have survived with only Spanish in Mexico. But I haven't been speaking it and practicing (8 months) so I'm forgetting grammar and simple things that I used to be sure about. Now it's time to rebuild that foundation and make sure it's solid. Thank you for your videos bc they are super helpful!

I could always use a reminder about this and this was so timely. I'm living in Spain and I haven't mastered it completely but I know enough about the differences. You're right, it's not enough just to know. The application is what helps and there's nothing like living in Spain and having to show and prove lol. For me, the best advice or note that has helped me is that the preterite refers to an action that started and stopped, it's not a continuous action. Imperfect is more about background, past actions that were ongoing. Or basically, again for me, if the rule for the preterite doesn't make sense to apply, it's automatically the imperfect. Thanks for the video!

Great video! What helped me remember: preterite is talking about a specific event that happened. Imperfect is talking about something that happened over a period of time. "My mom made me breakfast yesterday." Vs. "My mom always made me breakfast when I was a child."

Thank you for this video! Much love from London 🙏 I've been working on Mastering the past tense - intentionally - for the past two months and I've come a LONG way! I'm now (thank God) an advanced speaker and my method for propelling me has truly been reading (not out loud, but like in my mind like I would with an English book) and committed to that daily. The main objective here is to experience how the language is used in real life context. There is sooooo much power in reading that I've only had a deeper realisation on in the past few months and it's been a game changer. I've realised that for my level - a desire to teach and deliver content in Spanish (essentially, really master the language), I need a huge amount of input and passive listening is not enough. Why? Because when we're reading we actually have to be engaged with the material vs passively letting the knowledge go over our heads. By the way, I also listening to a lot in Spanish so there's nothing wrong with passive listening, my point here is just on the power of reading for active acquisition. As I'm reading, baring in mind that I'm alot more advanced in my journey now, I no longer obsess over what something may mean. I will typically read with the aim of finishing vs trying to understand every detail. I now read to understand the general gist. And where needed, I will go back and read a paragraph or a chapter. The more disciplined I've been with reading for 15-30 minutes daily for the past few months, I actually find that I no longer have to re-read as much. I just keep going. In the instance that I don't understand a word and I've seen a few times, I don't take the easy route and Google the English word, I let me mind try to figure it out (given that it keeps appearing in different contexts). Afterwards, I then guess what I think it means... THEN I'll often Google "the word significado" i.e. "querer significado". Google gives me the definition.. then if I've understood it, great! If not, I'll either keep pushing with the reading or (rarely) I will search the English definition. The moral here is really just putting the brain to work because it's really here to help us 😁 The resources I'm using to support me on this journey (because I need it to be relevant for me and my lifestyle) are the Bible (I use the NTV Study Bible) and 'Lupa App' which is incredible. The result of me commiting to this has done wonders in my Spanish conversations and I'm not making anywhere near as many mistakes. I hope this blesses someone and feel free to ask any questions and I'm happy to contribute some more 😊

I honestly learned it by not really trying to learn preterite and imperfect.... acquired it by lots of audio...and once you know the endings to stuff...you can navigate all day long...juego , juegó, juegue, jugar, jugando, jugaba, hablo vs habló , hablé, hablaba etc ... What I struggle with is sometimes future tense... For some reason I don't absorb it as easily as the other ones... Hablaré, hablaría hablarías, hablariamos, etc Well, I guess I did somewhat lol 😂 but yeah jajaja

I find that every verb in the past could be reworded to sound like preterite or imperfect. For example They were living in the forest Could be worded as They lived in the forest Is that continuing or is it implied that they don’t live there anymore?
@cbsteffen
@cbsteffen Жыл бұрын
Because preterite and imperfect are two different past tenses (simple and compound respectively), that affects the meanings of a few verbs in the preterite tense which are the following: saber (to know facts)-found out conocer (to know as in have a connection with)-met querer (to want or love) when preceded by a negative (maybe only “no”)-refused
