Very clear and simple explanations with concise examples. Talking slowly,in my opinion, helps the learning process because it automatically prevents the listener getting flustered while trying to take in something new, which can be stressful. So thanks.

When studying “preterite vs. imperfect” in Spanish, one must note that because these are two (2) different past tenses, they affect the meaning of a few verbs. In the preterite tense, “saber (to know as in know truth)” means “to have found out,” “conocer (to know as in be familiar with)” means “to have met,” and “querer (to want or to love)” when preceded by a negative means “to have refused to do something.” (Therefore, when “querer” is preceded by negative while in the imperfect tense, it means someone did not want to do something but did it anyway.)

Thank you very much for publishing these videos which I just discovered a couple days ago. I've been confused by the use of the imperfect and preterit tenses. I think there are more instances for using the imperfect, though. Some include descriptions in the past, especially the weather, "Ayer estaba muy caliente", but " Ayer fue muy ventoso" and when setting the stage for a specific action in the past such as "Manejaba en la calle 27 cuando vi el humo del fuego". I thought I understood the differences, but I did a short assignment and received a lot of corrections. I'll be subscribing because this seems like a good resource.

It looks like you've hit a nail on the head. There does seem to be a"story description" versus "piece of factual information" contrast. I imagine business Spanish rarely sees the imperfect, while Russian women would use it everywhere.

The way to think about the past is pebbles in a goldfish bowl. The goldfish bowl is just an unspecified amount of time, the pebble is a specific incident happening in that time. You *CAN* have a goldfish bowl in a goldfish bowl but you CANNOT have a pebble within a pebble _the pebbles may follow each other or be side-by-side at the same time but CANNOT happen one "within" the other._ Consider this statement in English: I watched the telly last night. While I watched, the phone rang. I got up to answer but as I did and the phone was ringing, someone knocked on the door; that was when the power cut happened. Analysis _I watched the telly last night_ could translate either way (preterite or imperfect) but _While I watched, the phone rang._ is an imperfect goldfish bowl of time (watching the telly) with the pebble (ie the event) of the phone ringing. _I got up to answer but as I did and the phone was ringing_ is now another imperfect bowl of time in its own right and then _someone knocked on the door_ is another preterite "pebble" event being dropped in, followed by another pebble (or event) dropping in _the power cut._ Vi la tele anoche, cuando veía, el teléfono sonó. Me levantaba para contestalo pero como lo hice y el teléfono sonaba, alguiem llamó a la puertaentonces a este momento, el corto de energía pasó.

Hi Jay! Do you mean, if we can use "estaba acostumbrado" when describing things in the past? Like for example, "Estaba acostumbrado a caminar a la escuela todos los días"? That would be correct but I am not sure if that's what you're asking. Can you give me an example? Thank you!
