I am 67 years old and remember these programmes with great affection. Happy happy days of complete innocence. Shame the world had to change and become so cynical and nasty.

I loved this as a child.I am now 58 and still watching it!

I'm even older than you, and I never tire of Bill and Ben. Not the CGI version, though. They spoiled that by giving Bill the low voice and Ben the high voice. The old ones were in black and white, too, which left more to the imagination.

Thank-you so much for posting these videos. I love finding these wonderful shows that I never had the privilege of seeing as a child. It's so rare to find classic shows. It is through the kindness of people like yourself that these beautiful shows are not being lost to time. Thanks again.

Thanks Ian! I rolled about laughing because I remember watching this programme but Fourteen years later. I was born in 64 so would be 3 or 4. I think it had been upgraded to colour but not sure. As far as I remember it was Andy Pandy Monday, Jackanory Tuesday,(boring) Bill and Ben Wednesday, Pogles Wood Thursday and The Wooden Topps Friday! Great stuff! thanks for reminding me of inoffensive innocent entertainment unavailable today unfortunately.

+MrBlueSky474 - The sequence I remember from my childhood in the mid-50s was: Mon - Picture Book; Tue - Andy Pandy; Wed - Bill & Ben; Thur - Rag, Tag & Bobtail; Fri - Woodentops. I can also vaguely remember Muffin the Mule clattering about on top of a grand piano. There was no attempt at concealing the strings! One other thing I can remember from maybe the late 50s would be the "Tales of Rubovia". There are a couple of incredibly short clips on the web, but I'd love to see a whole show again. String puppets again, voiced and filmed live in the TV studio. Oh, they were marvellous times.

I did a quick search and found this: kzbin.info/www/bejne/f6fCiH15q8SLr8k. As for Sara and Hoppity, I think I must have been grown up by the time they came on the scene!

At one point much parodied narrator (Maria Bird) says: "Now-you know what their names are don't you?" in very clipped BBC English enunciation.

According to legend, the language spoken by Bill and Ben was based on the noise of farting in the bath.

No such thing in those days - unless you were in the Army or something, perhaps. The flower could even be telling us that she's just involuntarily released some urine - but I think not!

Crystal Witch That may be true today, but certainly wouldn't have been in the 1950s.
