I struggle to understand what people mean when they call Bill a defensive mastermind. During his tenure at NE, Brady only had a top 10 defense in 7 years if I'm not mistaken. The rest of the time, the defense was below average.... in Toms 19 total years, they averaged 17.5 in defense... there are 32 teams in the NFL.. 17.5 is below average. The year that Brady became the first ever unanimous MVP (2011), the Pats went to the SB with the 31st ranked defense, which was literally the worst rated to make the SB. I just don't get what people are talking about.

Having a player like Tom Brady at QB covers up for a lot of other issues. Bill is a defensive mastermind, maybe the greatest of all-time...but the way he ran things only worked when Tom was there to hold it all together. Drafting 7th round white slot guys and cobbling together a WR corps out of spare parts doesn't work anymore. Underpaying guys because Tom is there taking less doesn't work anymore. Drafting poorly is more glaring now. Bill is still the greatest defensive mind, but we see what the offense is like when Brady isn't there to elevate everyone around him.

Belichick makes alot of D prospects play like B's and alot of B's play and become A's. I think Belichick might be suffering from 2 things right now. A roster with scarce talent after so many years of winning + QB instability. Also, a changing league. Belichick (or those in his system as OC) thrived off of dink and dunk and power running. I dont think thats how this league works anymore, just so much more incentivized to air it out, almost noone even turns the ball over anymore.

You can draw the same distinction with the coach Paul Brown and Otto Graham. Graham won all the championships that fans credit to Paul Brown. After Graham left, Paul Brown still had the greatest running back of all time and he didn't match the Otto Graham level. BTW, in his previous (collegiate) coaching job, Paul Brown had never beaten Ohio State - until Otto Graham played QB for him.

Cowherd is emphasizing the obvious. This is no indictment of Belichick. This is simply an absolute of the game - coaches don't play. The coach can only contribute so much to the success of the team. Brady learned from Belichick and Tom set the tone Bill needed for the team to win - and they both pursued excellence in their craft. You cannot tease two forces apart. Like John and Paul or Axel and Slash, they were better together.

Why do you guys have to lie so much? 1. Belichick didn't hold Tom back at all, he's the reason he developed into the player he is. Even Tom says this. 2. Belichick's defense is responsible for all of their wins, it's a team sport. We all saw what happened when the Pats defense didn't show up in 2018. 3. Are you high? How did the defense get "shredded" in 6 of those games? In 9 games, Belichick's defense gave up 17, 29, 21, 17, 19, 24, 21, 41, and 3 offensive points. He pitched a 4th qtr shutout vs Atlanta and Seattle, and shut down the Rams twice. In those 9 games, the defense allowed more than 21 points three times. If you think that's getting shredded, that tells me a lot about Tom Brady. Keep in mind that in four of those superbowls, the Patriots offense was pathetic, because of Tom. 4. 5 rings? Okay buddy, why don't you tell me what team Brady could have played for from 2001-2019 that would have won 5 superbowl, and would have developed him into a star quarterback?

McNabb 350 and 3tds ( he choked under pressure his whole career) Delorme 350 and 3tds Wilson 250 2tds and Lynch over 100 1td Atl was up 28-3 4th Q GW td's 2x to the Giants and Nick Foles destroyed his defense I gave him credit for the games against the Rams ( Warner had 365, btw) No defensive guru should hang their hat any of those stats. 3. From 2011 to 2019 ...Mcvay, Shanahan, Reid, Doug Peterson, Sean Payton, Jim Harbaugh, and Bruce Arians prob more were all running better offensive systems than what Brady had. He wins multiple SB's in any of those offenses. He proved it when he was past his prime in T.B.

Coach sunshine - Bill was horrendous in Cle- o was there . No one supported him, micro - managing, or his draft picks ( e.g., Tommy Vardell , and many others ) If he had not brought and over paid for former Giants players - they would have been substantially worse k. Andy was the longest coach not to win a ring before Mahomes, so what are you talking about he won so much? Belichick won a playoff game with Cleveland and they didn’t repeat that feat til 2002. Bill won 2 chips as a Def C. Jim Johnson doesn’t get the right credit for those Eagle teams Andy was a part of and still 0 chips with Eagles.
