@@BrettHar123 thanks, ruined my day! Just listened to approximately half and googled most of what she spelled out in detail. As good as the books are, I suspected Browder was not completely innocent, and is a carpet bagger, at the least. Also, I questioned while reading, WHY did the Magnitsky Act get passed SO fast? More important legislation never sees the light of day. Other forces at play, here, I'm sure. There was a great deal of lawlessness in Russia, at the time, and there were no financial laws to break, so to speak. But still... disappointing...

@@lynnroberts76 not completely innocent, so what do you think he is guilty of, you suspect him, at the least of being a carpetbagging and at the worst, what ?? What do you mean carpetbagger, that he was a business man in a newly opened up country, opened up market and he was looking for business opportunities in this new market ? Is that what you mean ?? I think I get what you mean, yeah he's a obviously a bad guy. He's got that look about him, hasn't he huh.

Bill Browder has been an ignored voice for far too long. The success with the Magnitzky Act was important (Trump tried to ditch it in his first week but got a no go from the remaining State folk so close to 2014) but we should have been more clear-eyed about Putin. Masha Gesson also tried to wake us up.

Talking of Bill Browder, Putin the Barbarian and espionage there’s almost too much on the menu for those of us hooked on absorbing and addictive espionage novels to find time for reading in a safe house far away from the tsunami of grim news we face in real life now. For starters there are fictional thrillers like Charles Cumming’s Box 88, John Le Carré’s Silverview or Len Deighton’s noir anti-Bond masterpiece Funeral in Berlin. As for the main course, there are down to earth, raw and noir, often curious fact based Cold War thrillers you’ll never put down such as Bill Browder’s Red Notice, Bill Fairclough's Beyond Enkription in The Burlington Files series or Ben Macintyre’s The Spy and the Traitor. As for dessert, maybe something laced with the distinctly sardonic and singular humour of Slow Horses from the Slough House 'stables' by Mick Herron. We are spoilt for choice.

Read both books back to back and world dynamics makes so much more sense now. Loved how Bill was so honest naming names, and who were the helpers and who were the blockers. Politicians are so….. ugh …..

i can understand Browder's position but he is not necessarily appreciating the scope of US interests as much as he might. The US will benefit the longer the war drags on as Russia will bleed militarily and economically possibly to the point of collapse. Why should the US intervene to such an extent that it forces Russia to stop its own self-destruction?
