When I hear this, I imagine Phil Collins doing all his 'Lamb' fills everywhere. I love them both. Very melodic and thoughtful players for THE SONG. They both never just howed off. I am so happy Bill played with Genesis in 1976 though for a very short time. Both Phil and Bill can play their nuts off, but always think of the musc first. That is so important!

Love The Bruf! But let me bring up Allan Holdsworth for a second. Has Holdsworth ever played with a drummer who wasn’t a virtuoso? Tony Williams, Bill Bruford, Gary Husband, Chad Wackerman, John Marshall, Vinnie Colauita, Andrea Marcelli, Gary Novak, Pierre Moerlen, Steve Smith, the list goes on and on.

I was kinda expecting an AD/DC cover (my bad) but this is such lovely playing. It flows so incredibly well. I have always loved how Biill's playing flows. So unlike most modern drummers who seem obsessed with being robotic.

Soundtrack to MY life too - probably from 1980 onwards. I listened to every little bit of it. Challenging music, indeed, but I learnt that this is exactly HOW we learn. What a MAGNIFICENT body of work this album is, in every way. I met Bill in Hartlepoolwhen he played 'The Studio' with Earthworks and I was so star struck that all I could mention was how much I adored the yes stuff that he was involved with in the early days. Totally 'gone' with sheer appreciation. 🙂

Oh my - remembering the show at Paradise, Boston, around '79 ... the synth opening played over the PA, Stewart, Berlin & the Unknown John Clark already on stage ... Bill enters from left, pauses for a brief bow to the audience, then over to his drum kit on the far right ... picks up sticks just in time to attack the first crash. Just a bit of showmanship to compliment the technical excellence. Thanks for the decades of sheer brilliance, Maestro!!

Bruford is an astounding player. He has been my favourite drummer/musician since the seventies he plays around the beat in such a musical way but it never sounds forced or difficult even this 5/4 beat sounds natural . Can someone do a video on the evolution of Bill’s kits? (I saw one the other day dedicated to every single kit played live by Alex Van Halen….????) Bill’s kits are like a direct insight into the future of drumming… hybrid electric/acoustic kits… ALL electric kits… here we have one where the hi-hat is dead-center! Kits with concert style toms heaped up high and wide… kits where all the heads are on the same plane! Wouldn’t it be more interesting to learn about the stylistic and technical drafts that caused BB to change course so dramatically over the years?

Love this. Except the snare tone. A little too doink-ish for my ears. I had to take off my headphones and use the computer speakers it was getting to me so much. I'd say fire the tech, but I understand Mr. B's snare tone is the subject of historical controversy. Well, somehow I don't hear it in "And You And I" or "Starless". Maybe a little in "Thela Hun Ginjeet". Perhaps it got more pronounced over time. Perhaps it's room dynamics. Dunno.

I could hear 100 snares and would pick out brufords instantly. He recons he started out hitting the rim and skin early on to get the snare louder before he started miking drums up. Its a habit he cant break, he said.
