Elvis's only Grammy was in *Gospel* award. He was the most at home when he sang gospel. It's in his blood from his younger days and never left. Elvis will *never* be replaced in music. Let me say this, I have really been enjoying your Bill Burr reactions man. I'm an older white dude who served with some great black men in the Marines many years ago. I grew up poor, and yes a "Welfare Kid" as well at times, but realized long ago that, although there may be some cultural differences, we all really do have many of the same struggles and issues. Just through different lenses. It makes me very happy lately watching reaction videos on KZbin from various black men and women and they are watching either white comedians or music artists, or whatever. When we all act similar to you sir, we can all cross the stupidity boundaries of race. Yes, we all have some shit that we can poke fun about between races, but when you do that out of love and respect, it's all good. You my kind sir, I consider my brother. Keep going man!

Elvis did more for his community and for the lower income community then anyone ever. He didn't see color. He actually refused to do a concert if the sweet inspirations girls were not going to be treated as stars. Whitney Houston's mother was one of those girls. He was once at a Cadillac car lot and notice an older black woman admiring a car. He asked her if she liked that car and she replied oh yes it is very nice. He said would you like that car and she told him she couldn't afford the car. He turned to the salesman and told him to get the keys for the car and give her any frills on it that she would like. He was super generous to everyone he came in contact with. You would be missing a great thing if you don't look at all the videos and interviews about him. Your kids should watch with you and see how great that man was. And yes he died in the bathroom but to understand the whole deal you would have to watch the Celebrity autopsy show that features what happen to him.

In the case of early Rock & Roll it was because many white radio stations wouldn't play black music. So, those black artists didn't make as much money as they could have. However, the industry could take a song like "Tutti Fruti" by Little Richard, give it to a white artist like Pat Boone, and Boone would make a ton of cash that Little Richard wasn't allowed to. That's why Little Richard and others complained about appropriation. It wasn't just culture being appropriated, it was income.

Another thing about Elvis is that he was a gentleman. That is to say that he never talked trash about ANYONE in the press or interviews. When asked how he felt about a political point of view Elvis just smiled and said; "I'm just an entertainer. I don't want to get involved with that stuff." He did have his minor girlfriend Pricilla who he'd met while stationed in Germany live with him with her parents permission, but they did not get married until she was of age. Elvis' mother and father also lived with him during that time.

There was nothing fake about Elvis. He brought the music the only way he knew how, and it was Encouraged by Sam Phillips, "old guy Bill Burr was referring too. Elvis didn't invent a new thing though he was just mirroring the Jump Blues, Boogie Woogie, Blues, Jubilee music that he grew up with and loved. Philips had several black acts that he was recording on his label, and was having a hard time getting them to cross over into the main stream so he was looking for somebody like Elvis to help to usher it in. Elvis was at the right place at the right time, like lightning strike, but would never call it appropriation, at least on Elvis part, Elvis covered songs he liked and always gave respect back to the artist, like Crudup & that's alright mama.

As a huge star, Elvis was drafted by the Army, he refused to let his stardom nor being the only male child get him out of the draft. While serving our Country, he meet his wife, she was 16 yrs old in the fifty (consider the times) he did not marry her until later. Then Parker booked him to star in bad movie which Elvis hated. Secretly, Parker was spending, gambling all of Elvis’ money away. Elvis was trusting and very loyal. The constant touring (you have to witness him live) the movies and all took a toll on his body. The drug addition caused many problems, especially his stomach. He did die in his bathroom but, his girlfriend was in the house. Check his live performances out...HE GAVE US ALL HE HAD!

If we're going to speak about race and Elvis Presley its actually a fascinating material just to learn about. During the early years of Rock N' Roll, Rock N' Roll was almost entirely african american artists, as it was an evolution of 40s blue grass music. It is currently credited to being invented by Chuck Berry(who you should check out just for the music history), with Elvis later popularizing Rock N' Roll. If I recall, Elvis was once accused of saying The only thing Negroes can do for me is buy my records and shine my shoes." He denied it, and in an Interview with Louie Robinson for the African American magazine 'Jet" is quote as saying "I never said anything like that, and people who know me know that I wouldn't have said it. ... A lot of people seem to think I started this business. But rock 'n' roll was here a long time before I came along. Nobody can sing that kind of music like colored people. Let's face it: I can't sing like Fats Domino can. I know that." If your looking to mix things up in your music reactions, the early years of Rock N' Roll are all must listen for fans of both modern Rock and Metal as well as Pop, since that's where all of it starts. Guys like Pressley, Fats Domino, Bo Diddley, Chuck Berry and many more. Pain in the ass to find some of their music though.

Did he die alone, on the toilet (in the upstairs bedroom)? Yes. August 16, 1977. I happened to be living in Memphis at the time and made the pilgrimage to Graceland that night. He was discovered by his road manager, Joe Esposito, on the bathroom floor. He was taken to Memphis Baptist Memorial Hospital where, in the mid afternoon, he was pronounced dead. Initial cause was reported as heart failure. Later autopsy results discovered an excess of uppers & downers in his system. The doctor who prescribed the meds was later charged with culpability in the death. In a CBS TV special of a concert recorded 3 months earlier, it was obvious Elvis was sick & needed help. His inner circle (The Memphis Mafia) inadvertently prevented him from getting help. No one could tell him "no."

I love watching young people react to music from my day. I have really loved watching young black folks react to Elvis. Many of them have watched a documentary called Elvis and the Black Community. You probably know that Elvis grew up in a black neighborhood during segregation. I encourage you to watch that documentary.The best one is Baz Lurhman interviews Sam Bell. I'm from Tennessee and Elvis is almost a religion, but he was flawed. However, what always impressed me about him was his generosity. He would see a poor person looking in the window at a Cadillac and he would remember what that was like and just buy that person a new car. I thought that was really beautiful.

Yes and no about dying alone. He was in his bathroom alone but his girlfriend (he was divorced from his wife) found him in the bathroom dead. And he was on his way to getting clean and sober and skinny but the drugs had done too much damage at that point. You should watch his '68 comeback special.

Elvis actually died from an impacted bowel, confirmed in autopsy. He was taking prescribed uppers for shows and downers to sleep, but they had very little to do with his death. He was alone in the bathroom when he passed away, but there were people in the house. Also, he only got chubby the last couple years of his life. One thing that drives me nuts is when people say Elvis stole the black man's music. He grew up in the poorest part of Tupelo, where soul music and bluegrass was prevalent. He made it possible for rock and roll to be accepted and opened a doorway for all the others. If you haven't noticed, I'm a die hard Elvis fan. 😊 LFR if you have any other questions I'm sure I could answer them.

Haha, I too was thinking about the Public Enemy lyrics. But I doubt Elvis was a racist though. He grew up poor as dirt between black folks, his best friend in that time was black, he demanded respect for his black background singers, sang in the gettho and If I can dream ( referring to the struggles of poor black people and the speech of Martin Luther King). He didn't have to do all that, but he did.

The whole "Elvis stole from blacks" statement is absurd. He not only gave full credit to black blues artists whose genre of music gave birth to Rock N Roll but not only did white songwriters like Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller write some of those blues songs sung by black artists before Elvis but who do you think invented all the instruments used in Jazz, Blues, Rock N Roll, Pop, etc.? Yep, white people. So, just imagine if blacks invented all the instruments, played,sang and wrote many songs sung by both black and white artists and then were accused by whites of stealing the white man's music? It would be equally absurd. It was a joint effort!

Elvis didn't marry a minor. His wife was significantly younger than him yes. But by time they married she was 21. A distinction that people gloss over when reporting on his relationship with Priscilla. He met her when she was 14 in Germany. She was a fan of his. They started dating when she was older than 14. It is said supposedly she moved in with him when she was 17 or 18. Some say younger but Priscilla has been insistent (and I believe her based on what others have said) that he waited til she was the age of consent to do anything sexual with her. That there relationship was a lot more innocent than people were making it out to be. He asked her to marry him when she was legally an adult. Is it weird she met her future husband at 14 when he was already a legal adult. Sure. But it wasn't criminal because by time they married she was old enough to drink. So that's probably why people within his own circles didn't see the issue. The public on the other hand had a field day with the but she was only 14 when they met. Well sure but not when they married.

He didn't have a "beer belly"; his colon was paralyzed from very potent opioids. Addiction isn't funny. And that line from Public Enemy? It was never true. He gave SO MANY shoutouts to black colleagues. He called Fats Domino the King of Rock and Roll. James Brown attended his funeral and spent time alone with Elvis' body. And the list is endless. He broke Jim Crow laws since he was a child and never stopped doing so. It's ironic that he was one of the ONLY white guys in the music business at the time who always treated black people with respect and honor, yet he's singled out as "an appropriator." He grew up with this music from a very early age. And as for bluegrass, he never sang "angelic" bluegrass. He changed a bluegrass waltz into rhythm and blues!!! His portrayal of Elvis is utterly distorted because he basically doesn't know the whole story, or even a decent percentage of it. Appropriation (or really, expropriation) is Pat Boone! The Osmond Brothers, and yeah, that Bieber kid who's a has-been now. If Burr thinks he couldn't act, he hasn't seen "King Creole." Or "Flaming Star." He didn't WANT to do those musicals they made him do. He was humiliated. It was easy to do.
