I love how his conception of loving gestures is as a mode of competition or retaliation. It's exactly how I used to look at them which was why I hated gift cards and gift guessing in general. I didn't know how to appropriately express gratitude and I never got anything I needed just as I never knew what they needed me to get them that my adolescent ass could afford or was skilled enough to produce. I thought that direct actions would be a better because I could do things for them that were worth more money than I could spend on their gift.
