I grew up in the 1970s and 1980s. Back then, we played a game at recess called "Smear the Queer", where one person would hold something, run around, and about a dozen kids would chase after him, trying to get it away from him. In essence, it would be necessary to tackle him and wrest the object away from him. He was "smeared". Then when it was taken away, the new person that has the item would become the "queer", and we'd start it up again. Rinse and repeat. This was in ultra-liberal southern California too.

It’s a double sided sword. People don’t get to dictate how words are received, but people also don’t get to dictate what words can be said. So it’s a lot more complicated and is not very black and white. But it’s so much harder these present days since people have broken the sensitivity meters and now it’s nearly impossible to say anything without potentially upsetting someone. Something that used to be a joke that made everyone laugh 20-30+ years ago now leads to a lynching mob sentence. It’s really sad.

One thing Bill Burr said at the end of last year is very true. Back when I grew up in the 90's as a teen, we use to shock the grownups with what used to come out of our mouths.
