Jason Scheff didn't exactly have a choice. JS was (officially) going through a marriage & family crisis and (unofficially) his voice couldn't handle the touring anymore.

Jason seemed to struggle mightily with the live vocals the last 10-15 years, but it’s not like this band ever takes a break. Like…EVER! 🤣 When people bag on him, I send them to this video from ‘93, and dare them to still tell me that he didn’t have a voice, after hearing the second half of the song! kzbin.info/www/bejne/iWqYYo19qLiAfsk

It hurts to read such diminishing comments about your work Jason, but I really appreciate and admire your work, and love the person in you. How much I wish that you had left the group at some point, when you were still young, at your prime, and prepared to give a bigger step. You could already have a name in shorter musical scenes/ circles and markets. And more important, you could have got rid of all those cruel, unfair comparisons. But your love for the great band Chicago was much bigger. Than anything.😔 Just wish you.did more of your own material, because you are very talented for that.I always will have hope for that, and will wait patiently...I know you can ..Oh yes ypu.can, like the song " Yah Yah Yah" says.

I was fortunate to be brought up in the 80s. When Cetera left and did his own thing, Chicago continued on so I got to be into both of their music. It was like getting twice the new music every two years, it was a great time to be a Chicago fan.

@@lamarravery4094That was a good way to put that. David Foster had produced for both Peter Cetera from 1986 through the early 1990s and for the Chicago band during the same era simultaneously. Bill Champlin added much to the band as did Jason Scheff. The older founding members seemed to not be able to deal with the change and evolution of the band as time went on, but the band would not still be in existence with any lineup if it were not for those evolutionary changes. The "21" album was among their best, ever. I have more than one copy in different formats and some new still-wrapped new copies have shown up online for purchase recently. Had they promoted that album, maybe they would have had many hits well into the 21st century.

Two guys should have been inducted in the hall of fame with Chicago & that’s of course Bill Champlin who was an essential contributor on a their 4 successful 80’s albums & Jason Sheiff who was on half of that & those guys were apart of their last huge boom of success, the Chicago 19 album/tour, I was just a kid & they were my 1st professional concert I ever attended on that tour & they blew my mind! The revelation for me at that show/event was of course 1st off, the opening number was Bill Champlin up front singing the hit single Look Away & they looked just like they did in the videos at the time which back then was with no horns & with like four keyboard players featured on a track lol... but by the 2nd song, they brought out the horns & that Chicago showmanship & it was oh that song! & Oh that song! But Champlin & Sheiff we’re a huge part of those shows & in short, those two got screwed, they deserve much more respect for their contributions & legacy with Chicago, they were not just cover-band live contributors they brought much more then that.

I like Bill. He is very talented. I also like all the insights he has within the business, and his willingness to share them. One of the best "small things" he did, was his backing vocals in the Kenny Roger's song "Twenty Years Ago". Outstanding. It's amazing how he sounds exactly like Gary Morris in it, which is a HUGE compliment. Thanks for everything Bill.

But that's what happens when you get older...you just don't give a shit what people think and you become more of who you really are...and that can be a very cool thing. I would really like Jason to be absolutely honest about this, and the pressures he had to go up to...To someday he finally says the things that he has not have the courage to say. Because trying to imitate someone else's style shouldn't have been something easy at all. But, Jason is not capable of saying a bad thing about his fellow bandmembers, or the band's management. He's such a good, discreet and considering guy... I would like someone to make him a really good, serious interview about this matter...After all, Jason is not on Chicago anymore after more than five years, does not have nothing to loose, nor is planning to coming back to Chicago. I would like him to be as honest as Danny Seraphine was inside his book.. With the bad things as well as the good things included.😌🌟

As always I just can’t get enough of Bill and these interviews are the best because of two main ingredients He Keeps It Real and You Allow Him To Speak His Mind. My heart goes out to him on the loss of his son and I lost a brother suddenly and till this day I see the heartbreak in my Mom and she’s never been the same. My son was diagnosed with leukemia at an early age but thankfully he still is alive today but I just can’t imagine the hurt Bill carries inside so keep his memory alive Bill. I loved the new guys in the band and Jason had entered the band right after they came off Chicago 17 and you talk about pressure. Jason did an incredible job and I just hate the comparison between him and Peter. You’ll always have the ones who don’t accept change and Chicago is no different from other bands such as Journey,Foreigner,Van Halen and the list goes on. But he took that band into the next level and they better be thankful they are still touring today because of Jason and what the new guys brought to that group. I never ever heard a pitch problem with Jason but one thing about Chicago is they tour too much and aside from the regular tour dates they play a lot of private gigs so that would be hell on anyone’s vocals but I just never ever heard it. Great interview and hope this a minimum 50 parts 😂

@@razorback9926 I definitely prefer the stuff with Kath, but I don’t think it’s directly because of Terry at all. Jason wud always have an uphill battle replacing Peter and was probably in a bit of a no win situation with some no matter how he performed. Like Bill said, it would drive u nuts being told to copy someone else. Hard to see anybody doing better than he did. I remember when Jason first joined the comparison was immediately to that of Peter, but I also think that he was trying to sound like him too. I liked his singing better later own when he stopped trying to sound like Peter and just sing with his own voice. As such, with enough of his own songs under his belt, when ever he'd sing a Cetera song live you could immediately hear more of a strain and less comfort, I thought. However with Bill, I never thought he ever sounded anything like Terry. Other than a lower range and huskier, bluesy quality, they are really nothing alike. I'm guessing that was a relief. Maybe because there had been a few years since Terry where you had Dacus, who sounded even less like Terry, in the meantime.

John, recent subscriber, love your content and really loving this interview with Bill. I think the 9 parts you have put up so far has shed light on what an utter shit show Chicago became in the 80s and 90s with how they pushed people out of the band (Peter, Bill, Danny, and to a lesser extent Jason). It is obvious that Bill really respects Peter as a vocalist and as a person. You probably didn't ask this specifically, but I am so curious what BIll thought of the horn section because for my money, those guys, as good as they were as musicians really didn't like certain people coming to the forefront (such as Peter and Bill in the late 80s). I am fairly confident if Terry had lived into the 90s and 2000s and his rep as a great lead guitarist gained momentum, those 3 would have tossed him under the bus just like they did Peter and Bill because his talent and charisma would have grown beyond the band and that is something the brass section really couldn't abide. Anyways, keep putting out excellent content, you always ask the questions that I think fans want to ask if they had the chance. Cheers.

Part of the problem is that when you're in a band (even one with multiple lead singers) you're supposed to sound "like the band". Chicago's style isn't really "jazz". Being in a band stifles creativity, and from what I know Chicago doesn't like their members extensively focusing on solo careers.

Peter said in an interview that he wanted to do a solo album. He had a sit down meeting with the guys in the band, who told him that he could not do a solo album, & stay in the band. So he decided that they didn't want him anymore, & went to do the solo.

Actually, Peter released his first solo album while he was still in Chicago. Peter's issue was that he wasn't allowed to do any of his solo work on tour with Chicago, or to take a break from touring with Chicago to promote his solo album.
@waltersimmons946
@waltersimmons946 2 жыл бұрын
The real truth was Chicagos management agreed first that Peter could spend time with his (then baby) daughter and could do his solo album during a break that never happened. The management and band broke the promise that was made first to Peter and they reneged on it, when it came time to do Chicago 18 that's when it all fell apart. They assumed Peter would cave to what they wanted and they did NOT expect in a million years he would say "It's time for you to look for a new bass player" their intimidation tactic backfired. Cetera did the right thing.

Great Great replacement . Jason Scheff, fantastic singer, forget about vocal range and technicalities, his voice sounded great, Peter Cetera type voice. I love that type of voice, other than Peter Cetera and Jason Scheff, no one else had that voice in my listening experience, so for me, Jason Scheff was a very valuable singer. And then when Scheff was in Chicago, Chicago made many outstanding pop tunes. Sophisticated high class late mid to late 80s Pop! So he was equally precious to me as a Chicago fan. But independently looked at, you can't compare the two, Peter Cetera was a giant, had massive iconic hit singles in a Solo career, and also the first one who presented that kind of voice.

There is an interview out there he did in 2019 for non music related site. He has retired. Looks like he finished up his,last tour in late 2018 and said that's it. Honestly that he hung in there for as long as he did was a bonus for fans as he never really loved touring

@@jakeschutz6342 I wish Peter would've given his fans a heads up, had I known it was his last yr of touring, I would've made an effort to see him.

I'm deducing (from watching different interviews on Chicago) that Lamm & Pankow may be the main bitches in the band. In that HBO Chicago documentary, Pankow painted Bill as being an egomaniac. I was in a backing band for a couple of shows with Bill (just 3 or 4 songs.) I found Bill to be a pleasant, funny and respectful guy. There was no rehearsal with him. The backing band did their homework. Bill came on and did his songs like what was sent to us. That was much appreciated!. You'd be surprised at the artists who have significantly different live versions of their songs, but don't send those. When you have little to no rehearsal...well, you're just asking for a train wreck. Bill is a pro.

I agree with Bill that Jason was a bit pitchy. I wonder where that comes from because Peter Cetera didn’t seem to have that problem. But Jason is still a great musician.

Now I ask myself,did they really worked with Jasonto fix his pitch problems?? Did they ever made him take some serious vocal coaching at some point? And how it was that, just after leaving Chicago, Jason 's pitch was dead on like Bill said? Did it magically get fixed? What was the real problem Jason had that couldn't be fixed during Chicago? Really interesting questions?!!🤔

Jason wins the Sammy Hagar Ronnie James Dio Award for stepping up to the mic and knocking it out of the park. 'Will You Still Love Me' is still my favorite Chicago song.

Bill added that gritty vocal to Chicago when he joined which punched Chicago back into the mainstream. Miss his sound.

Chicago survived 3 decades after Cetera left because of Bill and Jason. Otherwise the band is just pure NOISE

Chicago had created a tremendous band, following and brand with their original line up. People seem to forget just how big they were. None better in my personal opinion, (and I think a lot of other people as well). Because their staying power has spanned so many decades some think Peter was somehow the all powerful singer and carried the band. The reality is Peter was part of the success, and rightfully so, but no one can tell me he made Chicago for the first 11 albums. After Terry, the shift in band management and the unrelenting push for pop hits unfortunately did change the band. Bill wrote and performed some really good music, however, his style of performing original Chicago hits was in fact a problem. Chicago had every right to look for a performers who were aligned with the style of the early music. If Bill wasn't really that aligned, no harm, just move on.

I always like Jason, way underrated , I don’t think Cetera was missed after Jason stepped up as a bass/singer for Chicago. He brought a good vibe after Cetera left .

For me, I missed Peter Cetera's voice from Chicago. Chicago 17 was my first album by them, I heard their prior hits too but frankly for me, I ultimately came to appreciate just two Chicago songs both by Peter.
