Bill Champlin is a terrible singer and a terrible interpreter of music. He should stick to writing and let other people play the songs. He tries to get too creative in his interpretations and his arrangements and that's where he stinks it up. And his voice is just annoying. He ruined Chicago's songs with his backup vocals. Backup vocals are supposed to be sung "straight" so that they sound "tight" and together. Bill would be back there doin' his own thing on backup vocals and it sounded hideous. And he thinks that he's good at funk. He's not. Bill sounds like a twangy country western singer and that's probably all he should sing if he must sing at all. And by the way Bill, it didn't "blow my mind."

Bottom line: Bill Champlin uses excessive melisma. I think he does it in many cases because he's bored with singing the same songs the same way over and over so just throws something out there to see how it sounds just because it's different, not necessarily better (in fact most times it's just awful). Funny thing is the studio versions of his music are not nearly as indulgent, probably because he has a producer providing some discipline when he's cutting a record. And to engage in the grunts and groans and squeals and mispronunciation and syncopation in backup vocals is selfish and unprofessional. This performing habit was contagious because you see some performances by Jason Scheff using the same pseudo-bluesy funk voice on his songs in live Chicago shows.

Pete, Please listen to Bill’s first solo album “Single” I think it might change your mind about his abilities.

Well fuckin' hell, Pete...tell us all how you REALLY feel. So his singing style is not your cup of tea. You certainly have a right to your opinion. Almost 80% of the reason I can't stand American Idol or The Voice are singers with a terminal case of the melismatic runs. I don't think Bill is incapable of "straight" singing, as you say, but if you could ignore Bill's singing for a second and listen to his B3 chops, I can't see how you would say the man is devoid of funk. Seems to me that your objection is how he distinguishes his voice from the other back-up singers by just being Bill. Maybe the producers asked him to do his signature melismatic runs so people listening would say, "Hey...that sounds like Bill Champlin".
