This short clip just reinforces my thought that Mr. Charlap is the pianist I'd choose to hear over all other living pianists today. His blend of subtlety, technique, and interpretation of the American songbook is just pure joy to hear.

Bill Charlap makes this 52' upright sound like a baby grand
@patriciodasilva7902
@patriciodasilva7902 6 жыл бұрын
Thats' why they call it an upright grand, -- the strings are just about as long as those in a small grand. I have one, due to space limitations in my home. This one sounds better than most baby grands I've heard.

solo piano jazz, there is no name for it. He's definitely influenced by Bill Evans and I'm also hearing some Dick Hyman, too, but Charlap is his own stamp, for sure. There is only one pianist I can say who is not influenced by anyone, and that is Thelonious Monk :)

I think what maybe lost on some people from how good Bill sounds, is how underwhelming this piano model is. It looks like a UX30A or similar. If you've ever played it, you'll know the action is meh, the sound is meh for its large size, and it's just okay overall. But Bill Charlap is such a pro's pro that you would never know it from the way he dominates and finesses the keyboard.
