One could never pick a top 10, let alone 20. So many great ones! Others mention Bud Powell and McCoy Tyner, but I would add Earl Hines, Fats Waller, Nat Cole, Teddy Wilson, Dave Brubeck, and a few others too. Generations differ in style, but the feeling & technique shine through. So many more deserve mention! Maybe a top 50 could get most of them in.

@@MarimaruXD ok, it's just that you say "very few would care about Bud" in response to me mentioning how much regard he is held in by many of the pianists included in the item commented on. If you're referung to the general population, I'm sure you have a point, but I know that most top tier jazz musicians have enormous regard for his immense contribution to improvised music. Glad you appreciate his talent and sorry I missed your point.

I think of the great Jimmy Rowles. What are you thinking to make such lists??? See the youtube where Oscar Peterson features Rowles on his TV show. Oscar revered Rowles. Rowles could take the most mundane tune and infuse some indepth chordal progressions to create a masterpiece.

Erroll Garner has that rare ability to be technically innovative and yet appeal to a wide audience. Bud Powell, the guy who out Dizzed Dizzie Gillespie and out Birded Yardbird Parker when be-bop ruled. Petrucciani and Camilo both display virtuosity and that x factor that captivates a wide audience. Lists like this reveal the style of jazz preferred by the assessor.

It's so arbitrary to decide which are the 10 best pianists. I share your point of view, they're all great pianists. The question is that your list leaves out dozens of others. When people understand that music is not about speed and technique, it´s not a horse race, they will value some other pianists like Bill Evans, Clare Fischer, Michel Petruccianni and Makoto Ozone. When I was a teenager I valued too much speed. Oscar Peterson, Liszt and many other were my idols. Not that they aren´t good, this is not the case, but beginners tend to appreciate only speed, technique and showmanship. When you´re growing old, you can really appreciate music the way it should. There´s a saying: "When the musician is beginning to be greater than the music he produces, there is a BIG problem".

Art Tatum, Thelonious Monk, Bud Powell, Oscar Peterson (whose playing I don't even like), Herbie Hancock (due to his prolific 1960s solo work, time with Miles and his early proflic 1970s funk work, chart hits, etc), Barry Harris (because he has been and still is the only pure bebop pianist left on the planet), Patrice Rushen, McCoy Tyner for his work with Trane, Hazel Scott, Phineas Newborn, Jr., particularly when he was younger.

My favorites. 1. Thelonious 2. Oscar 3. Herbie 4. Ahmad Jamal 5. Keith Jarrett 6. Bill Evans 7. McCoy Tyner 8. Wynton Kelly 9. Errol Garner 10. Joe Sample And for the record, George Duke is my absolute musical hero in terms of what I try to embody, but definitely more of a keyboard player, which is what I consider myself too.

I would say that comparing is really not possible for each jazz pianist has his/her own style and listeners have preferences. That being said, a real comparison would be all playing the same piece (arrangements could be different, of course) and playing with ONLY the piano and no other instruments. The one I know who made a couple of albums alone was Bill Evans. His "Alone" album is a masterpiece. His single of "Never Leave Me" is 14 minutes plus of fabulous!

Dke Ellington is a genius, period. What does Keith Jarrett suffer from? Hemorrhoids? Ahmad Jamal is terrific! Monk is a law unto himself, I love the way he plays. I find George Duke a bit of a show-off. Chick Corea is very good. Bill Evans is a true genius. Art Tatum is a force of Nature. Herbie Hancock exudes talent. What can we say about Oscar Peterson? Absolutely amazing!

For me bill Evans is no.1 because his playing is multi dimensional, full of beauty and full of genuine feeling. The clip of Peterson who is it seems trying desperately to outdo Tatum just doesn't compare to bill Evans.
