Bill was so clearly a “freak” when it came to playing the piano. He played in a way that didn’t seem humanly possible, at least to us non-geniuses out there. I don’t see how he even conceived of the way he played, much less actually did it…with relative ease. He was a wonder to watch and listen to. He was simply awesome, in so many ways.

It's strange with Evans. His verbal skills are as spectacular as his musical skills. Even his voice and pace when he answers questions seem to be a beautiful solo.
@SM-je3dh3 жыл бұрын
So exact. I thought exactly the same as you. Bill Evans is less human than music, the very essence of music, and yet so human to move us so deeply and help us to live.

What an incredibly bizarre [and likely expensive] privilege to have THE B. E. T. in your living room to interview and listen to as you please. With kids running around, no less... Thanks!
@peterj.andros39967 жыл бұрын
Well, not so incredibly bizarre. The host was Finland's wealthiest and most famous conductor of classical music with a son who played in the jazz idiom in Europe. The questions were pretty routine and so were the answers. Marty Morrell was always a somewhat neglected and great drummer as was the incomparable Elvin Jones. These 3 improvisations are some of Bill Evans' most satisfying....
@trappaskunk7 жыл бұрын
Agreed. What a wonderful privilege to share in this intimate concert.
@noahvale9397 жыл бұрын
I admit to being curious about the fee Evans might have been paid for this. I hope it was very generous. Unfortunately, I know none of it would have gone toward some much needed dentistry. He and the trio were giving their best, but the audience was, I guess predictably, awfully subdued.

@@noahvale939 In such an intimate setting and in the presence of one of the most sensitive jazz pianists ever, you would not expect too many hoots & hollers. I heard Evans live (Boston Jazz Workshop, IIRC) and he was overpoweringly moving. After the first long set (there were only 2, separate shows) I was exhilarated, but also drained.

NOT so private...it was apparently recorded for Finnish state television and in the residence of an esteemed conductor who owned the singular piano of Bill's choice...wonder whether there was more to this performance than the 3 truly great improvisations on KZbin.

Theres just something about the way that Gomez playing takes Evans piano harmony and chords to a higher level and beyond. I own the Montreux 1968 and Montreux 1970 concerts on vinyl record, and its thee best in terms of musical art expression. What I love about this interview is the way Bill speaks, was definitely a well read and well educated man. By far my favourite jazz pianist of all time. Was way ahead of his time, and probably not as appreciated at the time he was alive.

a very Finnish set. I could almost hear Sibelius goose calls as the camera caught the expansive lake - the shy young maiden absorbing that rich sound. Bill was probably served black coffee and pulla before he pulled out his huge harp and played songs and told tales of his adventures in music with his companions sledding the soundwaves behind him. as it was in the beginning so it shall be in the end.

"The only thing that I think is a danger about allowing yourself all of this freedom is that you could sometimes indulge yourself and express feelings that are too personal, I mean everyday personal feelings that might not relate to another person.. ..I think you have to be very careful; To have an aesthetic guiding force if you allow yourself this kind of freedom and also be very selective about the feelings you want to express because otherwise you could get as subjective as an infant that's crying in his crib, no one can deny that this infant is expressing himself, but no one would call it art."
