Bill Evans should be regarded among the greatest pianists of history. He played jazz in so higher level and his interpretations of the standards are perfect in a jazz context. He has great compositions and a great legacy in music that goes beyond jazz style.

Evans remained close to his background of a classically trained pianist. Even as he experimented with his interpretation of jazz music, it appears that his fans were attracted to his expressions of classical music performed with a modern touch.

@@algonquin1832 It is indeed a fascinating "interplay" of its own, isn't it? His foundational, classical-music training well-primed him for expanding the jazz idiom with his own innate uniqueness. And the jazz idiom (art as real-time creative process) freed him beyond the existing constraints of classical music. Without both, Evans's artistry would not have reached the fuller beauty, richness and power that it did. A true master. He worked within two disciplines, moving beyond both.

No one understood music more than Bill. His phrasing has such incredible depth it's hard to believe it could exist. A 16th note pause, accenting the 5th of a chord, holding a note just long enough to let it resonate perfectly, simply no one better ever. Thank you so very kindly for sharing this amazing archive.

My favorite jazz pianist. I love great Oscar Peterson and Art Tatum and so many more, but Bill Evans' playing creates such an enjoyable atmosphere that evokes so much emotion. He has technique to spare, but uses it sparingly. He was always in the moment and created such beautiful music. I doubt there will be another.

Whoever convinced him to eventually give up the swinging attack he uses here on Someday my Prince Will Come... well, it's a shame. Unfortunately, the exciting pulse of this set all but disappeared in his later years... :(

I played "Time Remembered" and this is a beautiful version, as are other songs of his from this period I also played, and he did here. He invented Ravel, Debussy, and Satie into jazz. The whole classical harmonic incorporation of impressionism in classical music to jazz comes from him. His drug problem always reduces my opinion of his musical genius. Because it's sad. And it needs to get out of music. It does not make you better.
