His whole appearance was an in-joke for the audience; he'd just had a big success for The Regard of Flight so THEY (the hip NYC audience) knew who he was but also knew that Middle America wouldn't have a clue. I adore Bill Irwin. For several years he had a contract with the Seattle Rep to develop a new play per year and I got to see a lot of his brand new works in a black box setting.

This man is a bona fide treasure of the American Theatre! Thank you for posting this.

He's an under-rated gem with natural vaudeville talents that are, unfortunately, anachronistic in the 21st Century. I loved his play that aired on PBS in the 80s, saw him on Broadway in my twenties, introduced him to my kids via Elmo's World and enjoy watching him now streaming on Legion, seeing him getting away with subtle, physical moves appropo to his character as if he's showing signs of freeing himself from such a straitjacketed role.

That was incredible, he paced his energy just right. I also like his voice, he sounds like he reads a hundred books a day.

Bill Irwin in this performance was a total genius because he is a total genius. Check out his interviews,in which he freely and authoritatively expresses the discipline of theatrical art. Then check out his performances, in which he demonstrates that art.

Declan, I saw him in Largely New York at Seattle Rep. It was a memorable experience for myself. For my friend, it was his first experience with live theatre. I will always remember that night

Me too! He did a workshop of L, NY in the black box, which I saw, and then came back about a year later with the mainstage version.
